  • The present study was carried out to investigate the actual condition of the evaluation of science learning in the secondary school, and to develop the basic data for the improvement of the science learning assessment. Various questions for three evaluative domains were asked to 51 science teachers with the questionnaire during the in-service training course for certificate on summer in 1998. The cognition of the table of specification appeared high as 98% responses to the questionnaire, but the teachers' ability to distinguish behavioral elements was low as 47% responses. The evaluative rate of three domains for knowledge, skill and attitude appeared as 45%, 35% and 20% evaluation in both diagnostic and formative evaluation and 40%, 40% and 20% evaluation in summative evaluation. The evaluation of process skill appeared a tendency depending on laboratory reports as 61%, and was higher rather than in the formative evaluation or summative evaluation. In the evaluation of attitude domain, about a half of teachers answered that they evaluated the domain with laboratory reports as 43%, and some teachers evaluated the domain with teacher's observation as 33%. Also there were a few teachers who did not evaluate the attitude domain as 8%. The rate for the elements of the process skill appeared 86% responses in the interpretation of data, 31% in the observative ability, 18% in the predictive ability, 14% in the classified ability, 12% in the measuring and data-investigating ability, 4% in the discussion ability, and 2% in the investigating ability. We could find out that many teachers had given higher rate in the evaluation of process skill and attitude rather than before the present study, therefore there was more improvement in the evaluation for process skill and attitude domain after the 6th curriculum.

  • Typhoons are significant meteorological phenomena that cause interactions among the ocean, atmosphere, and land within Earth's system. In particular, wind speed, a key characteristic of typhoons, is influenced by various factors such as central pressure, trajectory, and sea surface temperature. Therefore, a comprehensive understanding based on actual observational data is essential. In the 2015 revised secondary school textbooks, typhoon wind speed is presented through text and illustrations; hence, exploratory activities that promote a deeper understanding of wind speed are necessary. In this study, we developed a data visualization program with a graphical user interface (GUI) to facilitate the understanding of typhoon wind speeds with simple operations during the teaching-learning process. The program utilizes red-green-blue (RGB) image data of Typhoons Mawar, Guchol, and Bolaven -which occurred in 2023- from the Korean geostationary satellite GEO-KOMPSAT-2A (GK-2A) as the input data. The program is designed to calculate typhoon wind speeds by inputting cloud movement coordinates around the typhoon and visualizes the wind speed distribution by inputting parameters such as central pressure, storm radius, and maximum wind speed. The GUI-based program developed in this study can be applied to typhoons observed by GK-2A without errors and enables scientific exploration based on actual observations beyond the limitations of textbooks. This allows students and teachers to collect, process, analyze, and visualize real observational data without needing a paid program or professional coding knowledge. This approach is expected to foster digital literacy, an essential competency for the future.

  • This study investigated pre-service elementary teachers' understanding of the basic concepts of and their attitudes toward astronomy in Korea and Japan. The survey instrument called the Astronomy Diagnostic lest (ADT) that was developed by the Collaboration for Astronomy Education Research (CAER) in 1998 was used and modified to tailor to the two countries' contexts, including 12 items written in the two languages, Korean and Japanese. The attitudes toward astronomy were examined by the Survey of Attitudes toward Astronomy (SATA), which was developed by Zeilik et al. in 1999. Cronbach's alpha of this sample of the study was 0.69, while the reliability of SATA was 0.87. All the pre-service elementary teachers in both Korea and Japan showed a low-level understanding of the basic concepts of astronomy. 38% of Korean pre-service elementary teachers had correct answers to the questions regarding the basic conceptions of astronomy, while 37% of Japanese participants had correct answers to them. Although there was no statistically significant difference between Korean and Japanese pre-service elementary teachers, Korean teachers scored higher than Japanese participants in SATA. A significant difference, however, was revealed in the categories of cognitive competence and value of the attitudes toward astronomy (p <.05). In addition, it was found that both Korean and Japanese pre-service elementary teachers scored less than 40% about the basic concepts of astronomy and that they obtained lower scores than the US college students with regard to the attitudes toward astronomy.

  • The photoelectric effect is a representative phenomenon explaining the particle nature of light and is an important theme that led to the transition from classical physics to modern physics. Although the secondary school curriculum deals with the photoelectric effect, teachers and students are often confused with terms because the explanation of the 'light intensity' is different from that of electromagnetic waves. Hence, this study examines how modern physics textbooks explain the intensity of light through photon model. We analyzed the photoelectric effect unit of 10 modern physics textbooks. Results show that there are two different types of representation on 'light intensity.' Especially those two different types were found even within a textbook. Modern physics textbooks do not seem to provide a unified presentation of the light and cautions to describe the photoelectric effect and its interpretation are suggested for teaching light intensity in modern physics.

  • The purpose of this study was to survey secondary school science teachers' teaching styles and to recognize students' science anxiety about science teachers' different teaching styles. One hundred seventy-four science teachers and 2,122 students participated. The teaching style questionnaire and the science anxiety measurement scale (SAMS) with teaching style were administered to teachers and students, respectively. Teaching styles were analyzed in terms of teacher's individual variables, such as gender and school level. The science anxiety related to each teaching style was analyzed and compared in terms of students' gender and school level. The results were as follows. First, the secondary school science teachers were classified into four types based on their teaching styles: expert, provider, facilitator and enabler. Most teachers fell under the expert style category and the least under enabler style. This indicated that numerous science teachers in secondary school employ a teacher-directed style rather than a student-centered style in class. Second, students felt the highest science anxiety with experts and the lowest science anxiety with enablers. The students' science anxiety showed statistically significant differences with different teaching styles (p<.05). Even though female students felt higher science anxiety than male students towards all four teaching styles, no statistically significant gender differences were found. Middle school students were more influenced by teaching style than high school students. Some suggestions were made for teachers to reduce students' science anxiety in classes based on results.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the aspect of variation of the texts in elementary and secondary school science textbooks at each grade level in terms of linguistic features. Data included some of the written texts related to 'Volcano and Earthquake' in Korean elementary and secondary school science textbooks in the seventh National Curriculum. The written texts were comparatively analyzed in terms of textual meaning, interpersonal meaning, and ideational meaning. Results revealed that there were different structures and linguistic features of the texts in school science textbooks depending on the grade level. Therefore, we argue that the differences in this study may make students feel difficult and strange when they read and understand science textbooks. We suggest that science teachers need to play the role of a mediator between students' understanding and the structural features of the scientific language in science learning.

  • The Korean national curriculum for secondary school emphasizes scientific problem solving. In line with the national curriculum, many educational studies have been conducted in relation to science education. The objects of these studies were well-defined and well-structured problems. The studies were criticized for overlooking ill-defined and ill-structured problems. Some research has dealt with problem finding in ill-structured problems, which is related to creativity. There is a need for a study of scientific problem finding process in an ill-structured problem situation, because this study will help teachers wanting to teach scientific problem-finding in an ill-structured problem situation. The objective of this study was to conduct an empirical study on the scientific problem finding process in an ill-structured problem situation. One task of scientific problem finding in an ill-structured problem situation was assigned to 92 university students; thereafter, 32 of them participated in the research through interviews. Results indicated that the scientific problem finding process depended on initial clues and tentative solutions. Initial clues were affected by students' experiences, such as major classes, films, and novels. Tentative solutions were influenced by background knowledge of the tasks. Students screened information browsed on the Internet. They applied some standards for selection, particularly emphasized reliability standards, which are supposed to be studied in other contexts. All the students used assumptions to make their problems appear probable, which could be a useful tool to articulate.

  • Many science teachers can be able to miswrite the vocabularies for seven kinds of experimental tool names on blackboard of secondary school in Korean language. The diagnosis test for the miswriting possibility was carried out by science teachers in secondary school. We questioned "How can you write each of Korean vocabulary for seven experimental tools?" to each of one hundred and fourty science teachers in three class of physics, chemistry, and biology during inservice training course of Gyeongsang National University on August in 1997. First of all, for the investigation we showed the real things of seven tools to the teachers and they wrote each vocabulary for each tool name on blackboard in English. In addition we explained the general use of each tool name. And then the teachers answered the vocabularies of them on one written paper. The miswriting results for seven tools were as follows. There appeared various miswriting vocabularies for each tool name. For examples, meas cylinder was miswritten two kinds of Korean name and the miswriting ratio of 4%, Mortar & pestle was miswritten four kinds of name and the ratio of 12%, Beaker & desiccator were miswritten one kind of name and the ratio of 51% and 36%, separately. Separatory funnel & spuit were miswritten two kinds of name and the ratio of 54% and 58%, separately. Schale was miswritten four kinds of name and the ratio of 51%. We might conclude that the cause of miswriting vocabularies for the tool name could be due to the original miswriting in Korean-English or English-Korean dictionaries as well as the seience teachers by themselves.
