  • This study investigates the effects of accumulated levels of heavy metals and nutrients of cultivated soybean plant tissues, after the continuous application of sewage sludge (SS) and industrial sludge (IS). SS and IS were applied to soybean plants at loading of 0, 11.25, 22.50, and 45.00 Mg/ha, and the contents of heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Ni, Cu, and Zn), proteins, and amino acids in the cultivated soybean plants were measured. The Cd content in the soybean was 0.02~0.05 mg/kg, which is within the safety level set in the standard, and that of Pb was 0.02~0.15 mg/kg, which is also within the safety level except for IS 45 Mg/ha. The soybean harvest quantity was higher in the treatment groups than the control group in the first year. However, in the second year, SS had lower harvest and IS had the same level or a decreasing tendency, compared with the control group. In the first year, the content of amino acid which followed handling of SS was increased in the sludge groups more than in the control group in the case of glutamate. However, the influence of continuous application was increased in the sludge groups in the case of amino acids of 12 types. In conclusions, the accumulation in soybean of heavy metals by sludge treatment is not a problem, but the decreased yields needs to be considered. In addition, the most appropriate level of sludge treatment was 11.25 Mg/ha.

  • The bone of spinal animals has a hydroxylapatite ($Ca_{10}(PO_4)_6(OH)_2$, HAp) structure which is well known as an excellent inorganic ion exchanger for various heavy metal ions in solutions. In this study, the reusability of cow-bone, pig-bone and fish-bone as a potential material for the removal of heavy metals in solutions was evaluated from the removal of Cu(II) ion in batch tests. The surface properties of three bones, calcined at different temperatures, were measured with SEM, XRD, FT-IR analyses. From the SEM analysis, a clear development of heterogeneity as well as pores having small diameter was observed as the calcination temperature increased. The results of X-ray diffraction analysis showed well developed crystallinity on the surface of calcined bones obtained at higher temperatures, suggesting a transform of amorphous type to crystalline type. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) analysis showed disappearance of water molecule on the surface of HAp and organic functional groups of the HAp with increasing the calcination temperatures. Cu(II) removal in the control test was below 15%. By the way, additional 40% increase of Cu(II) removal was observed in the presence of calcined bones. For three bones, Cu(II) removal was decreased as the calcined temperature increased. Cu(II) removal was increased as the solution pH increased due to a favorable condition for the cation exchange as well as precipitation.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of Zn and Cu on physiological responses of tobacco at the different leaf ages for the purpose of phytoremediation of heavy metal contaminated field. Plant height was significantly decreased at Zn and Cu concentrations of 1.0 mM or higher. Especially, root dry weight decreased more (50% reduced) than shoot dry weight. Zn and Cu accumulation in the shoot and root was dramatically increased after 2.0 mM treatment. The accumulation pattern was different by leaf aging in that Zn accumulated more in senescence leaf and Cu accumulated more in growing leaf. The amounts of heavy metal accumulations per plant were 146,000 mg/kg for Zn and 20,500 mg/kg for Cu at 2.0 mM treatment. The proper harvesting time would be suggested as vegetative growth stage for Zn and reproductive stage for Cu. The concentrations of other inorganic ions (Mg, Mn, Fe) were decreased when Zn and Cu concentrations were increased. Cu concentration and Zn concentration of both shoot and root were decreased in Zn treatment and Cu treatment, respectively.

  • Rice flour reference materials were prepared from the unpolished rice grown in Korea and certified for elemental composition. The reference materials consist of two samples containing normal and high level. The reference material at elevated level was prepared by spiking to the normal rice flour six toxic elements of As, Cd, Cu, Cr, Hg, Pb with $1.0{\mu}g/g$ on a dry weight basis. Homogeneity of the prepared materials was evaluated through the determination of Ca, Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn by instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) and atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). Small variance of elemental composition among interbottled samples assured homogeneity of the prepared materials. The materials were decomposed by high pressure digestion and microwave digestion method. INAA, AAS, inductively coupled plasma-atomic absorption spectrometry (ICP-AES), ICP-mass spectrometry (MS) and vapour generation techniques were employed to analyze the reference materials. From this independent analytical results, the certified or reference values are determined for As, Ca, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, K, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, P, Pb, Se, Zn.

  • Eight-coordinate tetrakis molybdenum(IV) complexes containing 5,7-dichloro-8-hydroxyquinolinol(Hdcq) and 2-mercaptopyrimidine(Hmpd) has been prepared. $Mo(mpd)_4$, $Mo(dcq)(mpd)_3$, $Mo(dcq)_2(mpd)_2$, $Mo(dcq)_3(mpd)$ and $Mo(dcq)_4$ complexes have been isolated by thin-layer chromatography on silicagel plates. These complexes have been charaterized by $^1H-nmr$ spectrum and UV-Vis. spectrum. The chemical shift values of the protons ${\alpha}$ to the nitrogen in the ligands are shifted to down field. The relative intensities of the peaks which are positioned at the same proton of $Mo(dcq)(mpd)_3$ and $Mo(dcq)_3(mpd)$ are observed in 2:1 ratio, in case of $Mo(dcq)_2(mpd)_2$ appears in approximately a 1:1 ratio. The stereochemistry of the complexes in discussed in terms of their nmr spectrum and Orgel's rule. By vertue of the intensities (${\varepsilon}$>10,000~25,000) the low energy($16,600{\sim}19,800cm^{-1}$) bands are observed for the electronic spectra of the complexes are assigned as charge transfer bands.

  • Research and commercialization of wood chips-urethane resin mixtures as paving materials for park trails and tourist attractions are underway. The aim of this study was to expand the use of such paving materials to the playgrounds, where vigorous physical movements occur frequently. For this purpose, the physical properties and safety of the paving material, in which some or all of the wood chips(passing through a 10mm sieve and remaining in a 3mm sieve) were replaced with sawdust, were studied experimentally. Strength, elastic modulus, slip resistance, shock absorption and heavy metal content tests were carried out by varying the mixing ratio of urethane resin, sawdust and wood chip. As a result, in the case of wood chip-resin mixtures with mass ratios of the resin to total mass of sawdust and wood chips of 1.0 and 1.2 and having a ratio of sawdust mass to total mass of sawdust and wood chips of 0-0.4, it was found that the properties satisfied KS F 3888-2. On the other hand, in case of using sawdust only as a woody material, the shock absorbability was below standard, and the mass ratio of resin to sawdust required 1.2 or more to ensure the specified tensile strength.

  • Microorganisms such as alga are able to uptake toxic and heavy metal ions. After Cd(Ⅱ) was preconcentrated on the carbon paste electrode constructed by incorporating alga (Anabaena), it was determined with differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry. A well-defined oxidation peak of Cd(Ⅱ) was obtained at - 0.75 V vs. SCE. We investigated the optimum conditions using the peak, which are the effect of the amount of alga, pH, ionic strength, temperature, and preconcentration time on the preconcentration of Cd(Ⅱ) and that of the reduction time and potential on the reduction of Cd(Ⅱ) preconcentrated. Calibration curve for the determination of Cd(Ⅱ) was linear over the range of $1.0{\times}10^6\;M\;to\;8.0{\times}10^6$\;M (R=0.9978) and the detection limit was $5.0{\times}10^{-7}$\;M. The relative standard deviation was 3.1% (n=6) for $7.0{\times}10^{-6}\;M Cd(Ⅱ). In regeneration of the electrode surface with 0.1 M HCl, the response was reproducible continuously by 10 times.

  • More than 1000 natural and constructed wetlands have been used to improve water quality. The general results showed that the highest removal efficiency was 84% for BOD and the lowest one was 48% for total nitrogen concentration. In addition, total phosphous removal efficiency was 67%, and the removal efficiencies are related to inflow loading. Researches donducted in Korea have focused on input-output mass balance and uptake by aquatic plant. As such little information if available about complex processes regulating water quality and role of microbes. Therefore, to determine the optimal design for construct, and methods to operate constructed wetland, researches about complex mechanisms of contaminant removal and interdisciplinary researches are necessary.

  • In this study, we investgated the uptake capacity of several water plants for heavy metals (lead and cadmium) in soil of rivers where are adjacent to a industrial complex in Chun-An city and in A-San city. We also examined the deposition pattern of heavy metal in plants. The results are as follows: 1. The soil of river in Chun-An city was polluted more serious than that of A-San city. In Chun-An city, mean values of lead and cadmium contents in soil were 26.224 $\pm$ 28.037 $\mu$g/g, and 0.854 $\pm$ 1. 127 $\mu$g/g, respectively. 2. Water plants examined in this study were Slum suave KITAGAWA, Persicaria thunbergii H. GROSS, Phragmiles japonica STEUD, Echinochloa crus-galli var. frumentacea WIGHT and Persicaria hydropiper SPACH. Both metal contents of several water plants distributed in Chun-An city were higher than those in A-San city. In these plants, Slum suave showed the highest uptake capacity for lead and cadmium. The mean values of lead and cadmium contents in Slum suave were 40.957 $\pm$ 29.577 $\mu$g/g and 1. 930 $\pm$ 1. 076 $\mu$g/g, respectively. Persicaria thunbergii also showed a relatively high uptake capacity for both metal. 3. Correlation between metal contents in soil and water plants was high. In both cases of Sium suave and Persicaria thunbergii correlation coefficients were 0.605 and 0.549, respectively. 4. We analyzed lead and cadmium contents in root, stem and leaf of several water plants. Both metals were mostly deposited in root. Much of both metals were also deposited in leaf. From the results, we suggest that Slum suave KITAGAWA and Persicaria thunbegii H. GROSS can be used to reduce heavy metals from industrial waste water.

  • This study attempted to obtain the basic data of utilizable possibility of preservative treated wood as a material used in a marine ranch. To evaluate the leaching stability of CCA-, CCFZ-, and ACQ-treated woods in seawater, the specimens treated with 2% and 3% (w/v) of CCA, CCFZ, and ACQ were exposed to deionized water, synthetic seawater and natural seawater for 41 days and then each component released was periodically determined. There was little amount of copper and chromium released from CCA-treated wood exposed in both deionized and seawater. Although relatively large amount of arsenic was released from CCA-treated wood, the release rate in seawater was lower than that in deionized water. The release rate of chromium and zinc from CCFZ-treated wood were somewhat greater in deionized water, but lower in seawater than in deionized water. Retention level and salinity of synthetic seawater had little effect on the release rate of components. The ACQ-treated wood had greater copper release than CCA- and CCFZ-treated wood, and the amount of copper released did not affected by leaching media used.
