Tetracycline (TC) groups, widely used veterinary antibiotics, can enter into environment through animal manure application. TC forms a ligand complex with multivalent metal cations via chelation that can affect sorption and mobility of TC in soil. So far, however, it has been confirmed through the reaction of the soil outside in the aqueous solution and the evaluation of the performance in the soil cultivation process is insufficient. The purpose of this study was to examine effects of copper on TC toxicity to lettuce growth. In this research, $750mg\;kg^{-1}$ of TC and 2.5, 7.5, $17.5mg\;kg^{-1}$ of Cu are treated in soil and lettuce was cultivated in the treated soil. Growth difference of lettuce by treatment was observed. As a result, $750mg\;kg^{-1}$ of TC treated soil showed toxic effect to lettuce and the effect is alleviated by copper treatment.
The PM$_{10}$ concentration and chemical composition in an western area of Busan were surveyed between March, 2001 and February, 2002. The mean concentration was 98.2 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥ with a range of 18.1 to 330.6 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥. The magnitude of metallic elements in PM$_{10}$ is as follows in decreasing order: K>Ca>Na>Al>Fe. The mean values of crustal enrichment factors for four elements (Cd, Ni, Pb and Zn) were all higher than 10, which presumably resulted from the effect of anthropogenic origin. Moreover, the wintertime values were higher than springtime and summertime values, possibly due to emissions westerly transported from industries around this area. The contribution of soil particle to airborne particle in the study area was estimated to be 9.5%.
Simultaneous mobility reduction of explosives and heavy metals in an operational range by monopotassium phosphate (MKP) and bentonite spreading technology was investigated. Potassium ion and phosphate ion in MKP act as explosives sorption enhancer and insoluble heavy metal phosphate formation, respectively, while bentonite acts as the explosives adsorbent. Then, the decrease in surface water concentration of the pollutants and resulting risk reduction for local residents of the operational range, by MKP/bentonite application was estimated. Under untreated scenario, the noncancer hazard index (HI) exceeded unity on February, July and August, mainly due to 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT); however, MKP/bentonite treatment was expected to lower the noncancer hazard index by decreasing the surface water concentration of explosives and heavy metals (especially TNT). For example, on July, estimated surface water concentration and HI of TNT were 0.01 mg/L and 1.1, respectively, meanwhile the sorption coefficient of TNT was 3.9 mg1−nkg−1Ln. However, by MKP/bentonite treatment, the TNT sorption coefficient increased to 113.8 mg1−nkg−1Ln and the surface water concentration and HI decreased to about 0.002 mg/L and 0.2, respectively. Based on the result, it can be concluded that MKP/bentonite spreading is a benign technology that can mitigate the risk posed by the pollutants migration from operational ranges.

Demand for developing artificial green pearl that meets the needs of modern people has been increasing. In this paper, eco-friendly inorganic pearlescent pigment was used instead of organic pigment and urethane resin was substituted for nitrocellulose which has been used as main materials in previous preparation method, increasing gloss from 73.4% to 86.7%. Urethane was coated on substrate before finishing with CVD, resulting high gloss of 96%. Colorimeteric analysis shows that a* and b* of CIE value was changed from +37.7 and +24.5 to +31.9 and +14.2 respectively because of CVD finishing, obtaining colorful, high gloss and durable artificial pearl. Quality and toxicity of samples was established by chemical resistance, glossiness, colorimeter, surface roughness, wear resistance, content of heavy-metal, and salt water test.
This study attempted to obtain the basic data of utilizable possibility of preservative treated wood as a material used in a marine ranch. To evaluate the leaching stability of CCA-, CCFZ-, and ACQ-treated woods in seawater, the specimens treated with 2% and 3% (w/v) of CCA, CCFZ, and ACQ were exposed to deionized water, synthetic seawater and natural seawater for 41 days and then each component released was periodically determined. There was little amount of copper and chromium released from CCA-treated wood exposed in both deionized and seawater. Although relatively large amount of arsenic was released from CCA-treated wood, the release rate in seawater was lower than that in deionized water. The release rate of chromium and zinc from CCFZ-treated wood were somewhat greater in deionized water, but lower in seawater than in deionized water. Retention level and salinity of synthetic seawater had little effect on the release rate of components. The ACQ-treated wood had greater copper release than CCA- and CCFZ-treated wood, and the amount of copper released did not affected by leaching media used.

In order to deal with the problem that phytoremediation takes long time in achieving the practical effect, the enhanced phytoremediation by Barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli) was conducted. In addition, we examined the synergistic effect by adding PSM (phosphate -solubilizing microbes) and EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) to the arsenic contaminated soil in the vicinity of the abandoned mine. The removal efficiency of arsenic in the site with PSM application increased about 16% when compared to control site, which was due to increase of plant biomass. The EDTA has been successfully utilized in respect of enhanced mobility and solubility of arsenic in the soil. As a result, BF (bioaccumulation factor) significantly increased but the inhibition of plant growth resulted in 20% reduction of arsenic removal efficiency. The application of PSM and EDTA may enhance the efficiency of phytoremediation. However, the time and method of EDTA application should be further examined to reach the maximum removal efficiency.

General water quality parameters were measured, as a base-line study, for possible water pollution problems in the coastal waters of some important harbors and near-sea industrial complexes all around coastal zones of Korea from June 1 to October 15, 1977. The areas surveyed were near Mugho-Samcheog, Ulsan, Jinhae-Masan, Yeosu-Gwangyang, Mogpo, Gunsan and Incheon. Among the surveyed coastal areas, the Ulsan and the Jinhae-Masan areas showed high levels of dissolved oxygen, pH, COD and nutrients. Particularly, the surface waters of the Ulsan inner bay represented COD 15.6mg/l and NO$\sub$2/-N 110$\mu\textrm{g}$/l. The surface layer of the Masan bay displayed pH 8.92 and NO$\sub$3/-N 372$\mu\textrm{g}$/l, while 309$\mu\textrm{g}$/l of PO$\sub$4/-P was recorded in the surface of the Haengam bay. In general it is shown that some coastal areas are presenting signs of pollution from man's activities.

The depletion of dissolved oxygen (DO) in urban streams has a profound effect on the aquatic ecosystem; however, the change in DO by resuspension of sediments and the cause have not been sufficiently investigated. In this study, the physicochemical properties (particle size, and the content of organic and heavy metals) of the sediments of an urban stream (Anyang Stream) and the characteristics of water quality changes (DO, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), dissolved nitrogen (DN), sediment oxygen demand (SOD), and adenosine triphosphate (ATP)) by sediment resuspension were investigated. The sediment content of fine particles (< 0.2 mm) increased from 36.7% to 52.7% from the upstream to the downstream, and the contents of heavy metals and organic matter of the sediment were also higher towards the downstream. The depletion of DO by resuspension was observed in the sediment at the downstream sites (P8, P9), where the fine particle content was high, and biological SOD (BSOD) was more than 88% compared to the total SOD. The increase in BSOD coincided with the increase in ATP. It was also confirmed that the depletion of DO could increase the amount of heavy metals (such as Fe, Mn, and Pb) released from the sediment. Based on the above results, it can be concluded that resuspension of sediments induces rapid water quality changes and may cause accidents, such as fish mortality, during rainfall, and such a water quality effect can be more pronounced in sediments with a high content of fine particles and organic matter and high biological activity.
The removing copper from CCA, CCFZ treated wood were tested with Tyromyces palustris. The shacking culture, solid culture, and stationary culture methods were tested to removal of copper in CCA, CCFZ treated wood. The steam pressure method and oxalic acid method were tested as pretreatment. To investigate of copper removal mechanism, the oxalic acid that produced by T. palustris and combination with copper was examined on stationary culture that contained CCA and CCFZ treated wood chips. Oxalic acid increased copper removing rate of T. palustris as pretreatment. Stationary culture had most removal effectiveness among the culturing methods. The removal rate of copper on bioreactor was 61% on 7 days. Copper-oxalate was detected on liquid culture, which show the oxalate from liquid of culture combined with copper from treated wood. It would be related to the removal of copper from treated wood by T. palustris.
