  • Chemical analyzes were carried out the samples from roadsides of the Gwangju city. The purpose of this research is to investigate the concentrations and distribution patterns of heavy metals due to urbanization and industrialization in the Gwangju city This study area is not significantly contaminated based on the concentrations of Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb and Zn. However, the concentrations of the chemical elements analyzed are locally higher than those of serious contamination level indicated by Ministry of environment. The dust pH is in the rage of 5.60-7.09 and was generally neutral, and there are no difference in pollution area and nonpollution area. Chemical analyses utilized are dilution by 0.1N HCl. In result of analysis by the method using 0.1N HCl, concentrations of Cd and Cu are a little high in Gwangchondong of Seo-Gu. Concentrations of Mn and Pb are a little high in Buk-Gu and Nam-gu, and Concentrations of Zn are generally higher than average of soils. Zn, in the study area, keeps polluting greatly as Zn concentration of average is 150.9ppm. All of P.I values are lower than 1, it means heavy metal pollution is not serious.

  • Chemical resistance of the cement mortar containing the Thermally Activated Diaomite(TAD) and H.M.(Heavy Metals) has been studied. The H.M.. extracted from EAF(Electrica1 Arc Furnace) Dust. were saturated with diatomite. The diatomite was then thermally activated at $750{\circ}C$ for 30minutes and powdeled. The powder was mixed with a portland cement on a weight basis from 0%. 2.5%. 5.0%. 10%. 20%. The optimum mixture. after those mixtures were subjected to compressive strength(7 and 28days) and leaching bchaviour of H.M.. was tested for its experiment on Wet/Dry cycles and chemical resistance(e.q. imrncrsion in 5%(Conc.) of H2S04, CaC12 and hlgSO4. It was shown that the cement, mortar containing 10% of' P.D. gave a rise to the remarkable increase in compressive strength. The compressive strength was generally decrease beyond the addition of 10% of P.D. The maximum $496kgf/cm^2$ of 28days compressive strength was acheiveti when 10% of P.D. was added to the cement mortar.

  • In this study, we have developed cation-exchange membranes (CEMs) which can efficiently separate heavy-metal ions among the cations contained in a water system. Sulfonated polyetheretherketone (SPEEK) was used as a base polymer and a powdered chelating resin with strong binding ability to heavy-metal ions was added into it. In order to optimize the performance of the CEM, the content of chelating resin powder and the ion exchange capacity of SPEEK have been controlled. As a result, it was confirmed that the removal efficiency of heavy metal ion was improved by more than 20% by applying the CEM to membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI).

  • Heavy metal treatment on the fertilized frog eggs before the first cleavage results in a quantitative alteration in the number of PGCs. The formation of PGCs is inhibited by a limited range of heavy metal during the early embryonic development. Total doses of lead above 70ppm and doses of cadmium above 4ppm result in a partial reduction of germ cells at the mitotically dormant stage. After this stage the germ cell number increases almost at the same rate as the untreated control tadpoles. In contrast, on mercury treated eggs, total doses above 0.8ppm cause more damage to germ cell formation. Their proliferation rate thereafter seems to be lower compared with the others. These facts seem to suggest that the heavy metal treatment on frog eggs prior to the first cleavage division is not highly effective in the complete elimination of PGCs in constrast with UV irradiation, even though cytolysis of the tissue occurs in the tadpoles.

  • The electrolyte cathode glow discharge (ELCAD) is a new optical system for direct determination of trace heavy metals in flowing water. ELCAD has been successfully developed for on-line monitoring of heavy metals in flowing water. The application of an atmospheric glow discharge between an electrolyte solution cathode and a platinum rod anode led to the development of stable discharge. The fundamental aspects of new plasma source have been investigated. The fundamental study of ELCAD system has been measured plasma temperature using Einstein-Boltzmann equation after searching Fe atomic emission lines. The spectrum of each elements such as Cu, Pb, Fe, Ni and Cr show only major elemental line and no ionic line possibly due to low temperature plasma source. The detection limits of each elements are also investigated. These informations show that this type of plasma may apply for monitoring of heavy metals in waste water which consists of complex matrix.

  • This paper described recycling of the bottom ash, sourced from the local incinerators as a fine sand for concrete. 10% bottom ash was substituted for the ordinary beach sand in the mortar(on a weigh basis), in conjunction with the pozzolznic diatomite. The specimens were tested according to KS L 5105 and analysed by TCLP(Toxic Chemical Leaching Procedure). The results showed that the hazardous heavy metals in the bottom ash are within the maximum permissible limit of TCLP. The compressive strength of the mortar with 10% bottom ash was highly improved, compared to the control mortar when the pozzolanic diatomite was used. It revealed that the hazardous heavy metals of the mortar with 10% bottom ash were leached within the maximum permissible limit of TCLP. It was concluded that the bottom ash can be reused as a fine sand for concrete when the pozzolanic diatomite was used as a stabilizer.

  • Adsorption behavior of metal elements onto soil minerals such as illite, halloysite. zeolite(clinoptilolite). and goethite was comparatively investigated at $25^{\circ}C$ using pollutant water collected from a gold-bearing metal mine. Speciation of solutions reacted was determined by WATEQ4F program, indicating that most of metal ions exist as free ions and that there is little difference in chemical species and their relative abundances between initial soultion and reacted solutions. The experimental data exhibit that the adsorption extent of elements varies depending on mineral types and reaction time. The adsorption process practically took place within one hour, with Fe and As significantly removed from solutions. On the whole, halloysite is regarded as the most effective adsorbent among minerals used in the experiment. Adsorption properties of alkali elements do not consistent with a manner predicted from hydrated ionic radii.

  • Since crude oil contains various pollutants including heavy metals, the environmental impact should be assessed for heavy metals as well as oil itself. In order to estimate the extent of heavy metal contamination, surface sediments were collected at the intertidal and coastal zone around the Herbei sprit oil spill area during December 2007 and January 2008. Organic carbon, sulfur and heavy metals were determined to assess heavy metal contamination in sediments. The crude oils contained C, S, V and Ni, but little toxic metals such as As, Cd, etc. From organic carbon content, the highest contaminated site was estimated that oils contributed to sediments up to 10%, and this site showed high V concentration. Potentially contaminated sediments by crude oil could be differentiated from unaffected sediments through V/Al and Ni/Al ratios, which can be used as indicators of oil contamination even after the oils were fully degraded.

  • A number of industrial zones in South Korea were reported contaminated by heavy metals. Such contamination could cause severe damage to the subsurface environment including soil and groundwater. The treatment of zeolite mixing with soil at the bottom of such industrial zones might prevent, or at least reduce the damage of contamination by adsorption of the heavy metals from the leakage. However, such mixtures should maintain the proper bearing capacity as a foundation fill material from the geotechnical point of view at the same time. To investigate the effect of mixtures of zeolite with local soils for the adsorption of heavy metals (Zn, Pb) and sustainability of bearing capacity, adsorption isotherm tests and direct shear test with compaction tests were performed. Results showed that the mixing zeolite with local soils effectively reduces the spreading of the heavy metal contamination when maintaining its proper geotechnical properties as a fill material of industrial zones.

  • For the reservoir sediment highly contaminated with total Cr, Pb, and Cd, the applicability of electrokinetic remediation method was evaluated. Also, BCR sequential extraction method was adopted to compare the heavy metal speciation in between before and after electrokinetic reaction that is operated under constant current condition for the sediment. After reaction, total Cr and Pb moved toward the direction of anode, while Cd tended to cathode and stayed highest in the midst of sediment specimen. From the BCR sequential extraction analysis, it was known that for total Cr and Pb the residual fraction that showed high fraction before reaction decreased and changed to the oxidation fraction. On the other hand, for Cd the fraction of exchangeable/carbonate that dominated most fractions before reaction changed to the residual and oxidation fractions.
