In recent the construction of bridges having hollow sectional piers is gradually increasing since the hollow section is more effective than solid section in resistance against seismic load. It is, therefore, very important to understand the behavior of columns with hollow sections in seismic design. However, many past researches were concentrated only on the flexural deformability of them. In this study the shear characteristics of them have been studied with scale model tests. 7 models having different void and aspect ratios were designed and tested to investigate the effect of them on shear capacities. And then the validity of empirical equations to predict shear capacity was investigated compared with the test results. The test result 80 percent of the valid area of cross section should be adequate. And compared to the proposed four model the experimental shear capacities are in good agreement with the UCB.

At construction sites, interest in the production of precast materials is increasing due to off-site conditions due to changes in construction site conditions due to increased labor costs and the Act on the Punishment of Serious Accidents. In particular, the precast prestressed hollow slab has a hollow shape in the cross section, so structural performance is secured by reducing weight and controlling deflection through stranded wires. With the application of structural standards, the urgency of securing fire resistance performance is emerging. In this study, a fire-resistance cross section was developed by reducing the concrete filling rate in the cross section and improving the upper and lower flange shapes by optimizing the hollow shape in the cross section of the slab to have the same or better structural performance and economic efficiency compared to the existing hollow slab. The PC hollow slab to which this was applied was subjected to a two-hour fire resistance test using the cross-sectional thickness as a variable, and as a result of the test, fire resistance performance (load bearing capacity, heat shielding property, flame retardance property) was secured. Based on the experimental results, it is determined that fire resistance modeling can be established through numerical analysis simulation, and prediction of fire resistance analysis is possible according to the change of the cross-sectional shape in the future.

The seismic design concept of RC bridges is to attain the proper ductility of piers, yielding a ductile failure mechanism. Therefore, seismic design force for moment is determined by introducing a response modification factor (R), and lateral reinforcements to confine core concrete are specified in the current design code. However, these design provisions have irrationality, which results in excessive amounts of lateral reinforcements for columns in Korea, which are generally designed with large sections. To improve on these provisions, a new design method based on seismic performance has been proposed. To apply this to hollow sectional columns, however, further investigations and improvements must be performed, due to the different seismic behaviors and confinement effects. In this study, hollow sectional columns with different lap-splice of longitudinal bars and lateral reinforcements have been tested. Seismic characteristics and performance were investigated quantitatively. These research results can be used to derive a performance-based design for hollow sectional columns.

This paper deals with the free vibrations of arches with rectangular hollow section having constant area. The differential equations governing free vibrations of arches are derived in polar coordinates, in which the effect of rotatory inertia is included. Natural frequencies is computed numerically for parabolic arches with clamped-clamped, clamped-hinged and hinged-hinged ends. Comparisons of natural frequencies between this study and reference are made to validate theories and numerical methods developed herein. The lowest four natural frequency parameters are reported, with the rotatory inertia, as functions of three non-dimensional system parameters: the breadth ratio, the thickness ratio and the shape ratio

The purpose of this study is to get a more precise frequency of hollow core slabs by comparing the observed values from the actual free vibration tests and the predicted values based on the analysis model. The actual free vibration tests were carried out in the construction field using ${\Omega}$ shaped hollow core slabs. Modal analysis is conducted based on the analysis model that takes into account the differences in section properties due to void parts of slab. The differences between the predicted values based on the modal analysis with analysis model and the measured data from the actual tests range from 2~7%. This study demonstrates that the analysis model that incorporates void parts of slab could be used in evaluating serviceability of hollow core slabs with reasonable accuracies.

An experiment was carried out to investigate the mechanical behaviour of the circular hollow section reinforced concrete member with internal corrugated steel tube. A specimen, 50cm in diameter and 340cm in length, was made and tested by 3 points bending. The test load was increased slowly (quasi static) to the failure or unacceptable deformation. During the test, lateral displacement at mid point and longitudinal displacement of extreme fiber on compressive and tensile side of the specimen were measured. The measured data were analysed and compared with calculated results for the equivalent member without inserted corrugated steel tube. The comparison shows that the flexural strength and ductility of hollow section reinforced concrete members can be improved by inserting corrugated steel tubes inside.
The transfer slab system is a structural system that transfers the loads from the upper shear wall structure to the lower columns. This is a costly system due to a very thick slab, and the relatively high cost can be mitigated by introducing voids in the slab. However, this system of flat plate containing voids is vulnerable to brittle failure caused by punching shear in vicinity of slab-column connection. Thus, the punching shear capacity of the void system is very important. However, the current code doesn't provide a clear design provision for the strength of slabs with a void section. In this study, experimental study was conducted to investigate the punching shear strength of the void slab system. The shear strength of the specimens was predicted by current code and previous researches. In result, the punching shear strength of the void system is determined as the least value calculated at critical section located a distance d/2 from the face of the column and the center of the void section using the effective area at critical section.

In this paper we are concerned with the performance of structural stability of torsion in square cross section of a beam with holes. The critical load is defined as the smallest load at which the equilibrium of the structure fails to be stable as the load is slowly increased from zero. The beams subjected to torsion are frequently encountered in general structures and these forces influence to the stability of structure. The boundary element method is found to be very efficient and accurate for the analysis of torsion problems including complex boundary conditions with respect to its simplicity and generality. In this paper, it is required to derive the boundary element formulation for torsion problem and integrate directly on the discrete boundary. To investigate the validity of the developed computer program, three distinctly solid cross-sections which are elliptical, rectangular and triangular one are analyzed, and comparisons are made with analytical approaches where these can also be used.

In this study, the characteristics of initial shear strength of hollow sectional columns were investigated by experiments with parameters of the aspect ratios, void ratios, web area ratios and load patterns. The test results were analyzed with comparison of the values expected by the empirical equations. The empirical equation was newly proposed on the basis of mechanical characteristics and test results, and its validity was evaluated.
