Good death recognized by the elderly (노인이 인식하는 좋은 죽음)

  • This study has been performed to identify meanings of good deaths among 350 old people aged 65 from September, 2010 until February, 2011. In this study, the subjects were asked about good meanings of death based on qualitative study of free format, and their statements were categorized into similar content areas. The results show that first, the subjects felt that the good death is a dignity death not weighing burdens to others, memorized as a good life, until th end of my life, a death receiving at home, comfortable death, a death like a sleep, with out pain, not long, a prepared process, a death after doing my best, receiving after doing my best, death after offering benevolence to others, within my beliefs, and finally a good death is after seeing good life of my descendent. These 16 free answers were also categorized into 6 meaningful areas such as considering others, at my home, comfortable scene, prepared, and death after living my wanted time.

  • In order to deeply understand the significance of death aesthetics in contemporary art, this research first summarizes the development process of death aesthetics in art works with popular perspectives, and then classifies and discusses death aesthetics in modern art works. The results of this study are as follows: First, the aesthetic expressions of death are divided into two types: death reproducibility and death symbolism. Death reproducibility includes reproducibility of real objects and reproducibility of imaginary objects. The symbolism of death can be divided into external and internal manifestations. Secondly, in contemporary art, the reproducibility of death through the description of death scenes has increased the various problems and philosophical significance caused by death. Third, in contemporary art, the symbolism meaning of death is not just something directly related to death, it also shows the various psychological states brought about by death. Subsequent research will promote the artists' visual expression of the aesthetics of death in artworks, and the profound changes in meaning that result from it.

A Study of Intensive Care Unit Nurses' Understanding of the Meaning of Death, Death Anxiety, Death Concern and Respect for Life (중환자실 간호사의 죽음의미, 죽음불안, 죽음관여도 및 생명존중의지에 관한 연구)

  • Purpose: We investigated how intensive care unit (ICU) nurses understand the meaning of death, death anxiety, death concern and respect for life. Methods: From November 2009 through February 2010, a survey was conducted on 230 nurses working at the ICU of 10 general hospitals located in Seoul and Gyeonggi province. Participants were asked to answer a questionnaire consisted of 67 questions under four categories of the meaning of death, death anxiety, death concern and respect for life. Results: Participants scored 4.27 points on their understanding of the meaning of death, 4.43 on death anxiety, 4.12 on death concern and 4.18 on respect for life. Participants' meaning of death was negatively correlated with death anxiety and death concern and positively with respect for life. Participants' positive meaning of death was negatively correlated with death anxiety and death concern and positively with respect for life. Participants' negative meaning of death was negatively correlated with death anxiety and death concern and positively with respect for life. Participants' death anxiety was positively correlated with death concern and negatively with respect for life. Participants' death concern was negatively correlated with respect for life. Conclusion: Compared with nurses who served at ICU for a long time, nurses with less ICU experience scored lower on the meaning of death and respect for life, while they presented high anxiety and concern about death. A training course may help nurses develop their view on the meaning of death, which in turn would enhance their performance in caring dying patients.

Effects of Death Attitude on Death Anxiety (죽음에 대한 태도가 죽음불안에 미치는 영향)

  • This study is intended to find out the effect and differences of individual characteristic of the death attitude on death anxiety. The college students who study in the area of Chonan, Yongin, and Asan and the adults who live in the area of Chonan and Asan enrolled for this study. We analyzed the survey data from 325 responses finally. The results are summarized in three ways: First, adults are more positive than college students, religious people are more positive than nonreligious people, female are more positive than male, and married people are more positive than unmarried people in the death attitude. Second, college students are more positive than adults, nonreligious people are more positive than religious people, female are more positive than male, and unmarried people are more positive than married people in the death anxiety. Third, there is a correlation between the death anxiety and the death attitude. The fear on death has negative correlation on all subvariables of the death anxiety. Avoidance on death has positive correlation on the physical change anxiety, and openness on death has positive correlation on the cognitive and affective anxiety. Finally, It showed that the death attitude are affected by the death anxiety. The death anxiety was not much, if the fear on death are more little, the death anxiety was much, if the avoidance on death are much.

Effects of Death Education on Attitude toward Death and Depression in Older Adults (죽음준비교육이 노인의 죽음에 대한 태도와 우울에 미치는 효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of death education on attitudes toward death and depression for older adults. A death education program consisted of needs of death education, alternatives for dignity on death, not ending death(I, II), hospice(I, II), and 9 patterns of death(I, II, III). Participants in this study were 38 older adults aged 60 years or older. Attitudes toward death and depression scales for Korean elders were employed. The data collection and intervention were performed from January to June, 2008. The subjects participated in a death education program for 1 time per week during 10 weeks. The data were analyzed with t-test, and Pearson correlation coefficients with SPSS/Window 14.0. After the intervention, the subjects showed significant difference in attitudes toward death compared to that of pre-intervention. The subjects after the intervention showed no statistical differences in change of depression compared to that of pre-intervention. Also, attitudes toward death were negatively related with depression both before and after interventions, but the change of relation was not significant. The findings of this study contributed to extend the base of program developments on death education enhancing attitudes toward death among Korean older adults.

  • Today manny contemporaries struggle to live because they disregard essential matters and indulge in materialism. They should not pursue wealth and prosperity and ought to find true meaning of life by studying death where one can reveal the essence of life. Zhuang Zi transcended death. His view of death is magnificent. This dissertation has ruminated on how contemporaries live and established righteous view of life and death on the basis of that. In addition, this study has researched what implications his view of death suggests to us today. There is no study as good as death. There is no great teacher as good as death in life. Studying death is studying a life. We can find life meaning and value through death. The matter of death is prone to be thought that a solution can be got only though existing religions. However, when it comes to Zhuang Zi's death, the matter of death can be resolved, not relying on religions. Zhuang Zi has played a role of our taking death in a positive way and relieving the fear of death. He has taught us that it is well off to adapt to the change of nature, leading to meeting our death in comfort.

The study on the view of death in the Buddhism for well dying's culture formation (웰다잉(well dying) 문화 형성을 위한 불교의 죽음관 연구)

  • Recently, the social concerns on well dying come to the fore as important discourse on dignity of human death, which detonation by the problem of euthanasia. Well dying means 'good death' the meaning of a word, and it means 'prepared death', 'decented death' 'beautiful death' by extention of sematic context like this as a general rule. In this paper the writter have considered that how the view of Buddhism's death contribute to the discourse on well dying, which regarding death as the starting point, death conquest as the finishing point of the theory. The Buddhism's discourse on the attitude interpretation conquest process of death contributed to formation of abundant discourse on well dying, especially the view of Buddhism is able to contribute to conquest of death anxiety and death education, that death conquest interpret to spiritual psychological phenomenon not physical physiological eternal life (or immortality) and conquer death through enlightenment on reality of things by spiritual psychological change.

A Study on the Death Consciousness and the Awareness of Good Death in the College of Nursing Students who have experienced Clinical Practice (임상실습을 경험한 간호 대학생의 죽음의식과 좋은 죽음 인식에 대한 연구)

  • This study attempted to identify and the relationship between death consciousness and awareness of good death of nursing students who have experienced clinical practice. The data collection was conducted for a total of 205 students from June 1 to June 15, 2018, who are 111 students in third grade and 94 students in fourth grade at S City of C university. Death consciousness and awareness of good death were both normal. Death consciousness according to general characteristics was the experience of thought about death(t=.559, p=.002), and awareness of good death was death education(t=.777, p=.018) and statistically significant difference in understanding death(F=2.964, p=.033). There was a positive correlation between grade and awareness of good death(r=.161, p=.021), but there was no correlation between death consciousness and awareness of good death(r=-.71, p=.311). As a result of this study, it was able to understand the death consciousness and awareness of good death, the importance of death thought and death education of nursing college students who experienced clinical practice, and the needed to repeated research for nursing education and relationship confirmation to improve the death consciousness and awareness of good death.

Convergence Analysis of the Factors Influencing Terminal Care Attitude (임종간호 태도에 영향을 미치는 융합적인 요인분석)

  • Objectives: The purpose of the study was to identify factors influencing on nurses' Terminal Care Attitude. Methods: A sample of convenience of 190 nurses. Instrument included perception of death, death anxiety, terminal care stress, death attitude, burnout, terminal care attitude. Results: A significant positive correlation was found among terminal care attitude, perception of death, terminal care stress. In addition, a significant negative correlation was found among terminal care attitude, death anxiety, death attitude, burnout. Perception of death, death anxiety, terminal care stress & death attitude were significant predictive variables. This variables accounted for 32.7% of the variance in terminal care attitude. Conclusions: Based on the Findings of this study, it can be used to develop educational programs for Terminal Care.

The Meaning of Dignified with Death (존엄한 죽음의 의미)

  • Purpose: We explored Koreans' perception of the meaning of death with dignity that Korean people. Methods: A phenomenological research methodology was applied. A total of 13 participants were sampled based on their age and gender. Participants were interviewed in depth from September 2015 through February 2016. Colaizzi's phenomenological analysis method was used for data analysis. To establish the validity of the study, we evaluated its realistic value, applicability, consistency and neutrality of the qualitative evaluation criteria of Lincoln and Guba. Results: Koreans' perception of death with dignity was structured as 19 themes, nine theme clusters and four categories. The four categories were "comfortable death", "good death", "resolving problems before death", and "death with good reputation". The theme clusters were "death without pain", "death submitting to one's fate", "death that is not ugly", "leaving good memories to others", "dying in a way we want", "death after proper settling of things", "dealing with chronic resentment before death", "death after living a good life", and "death with recognition". Conclusion: For Koreans, death with dignity meant not burdening others, settling things right and leaving good memories to their families and friends. Such perceptions can be applied to hospice care for terminally ill patients.
