  • The aim of this study was to analyze the aerodynamic properties of the composite cable-stayed bridge by conducting three-dimensional wind tunnel tests. Focusing on the improved section of the bridge in the two-dimensional wind tunnel tests, the bridge's aerodynamic stability was estimated based on the angles of attack and the wind angles. The aerodynamic properties of vertical galloping, torsion galloping, and torsion flutter were also estimated based on the design wind velocity, and because much of the cable-stayed bridge was constructed using FCM, it was not sufficiently stiff during the bridge's construction. Therefore, the experience progressed by stages: from the full stage to the tow stage, and until the bridge became a single tower. Since the original plane was designed to be a steel box girder, the aerodynamic properties of the steel-box-type and composite-type girder could be compared. The results of this study can be utilized as basic data regarding the aerodynamic properties of medium-length and short composite cable-stayed bridges.

  • This paper presents an investigation on the ultimate behavior of steel cable-stayed bridges in the construction stage, considering various geometric nonlinearities and material nonlinearities. To numerically determine the state of cable-stayed bridges in the construction stage, initial shape analysis and construction stage analysis via backward process analysis were done sequentially. Then nonlinear analysis of the state under the construction load condition, considering the weight of the derrick crane and the key segment of the girder loaded onto the tip of the center span, was performed to investigate the ultimate behavior of the structure. The effects of the girder-mast stiffness ratio, the cable-arrangement types, and the area of the stay cables on the ultimate behavior were also extensively investigated. Moreover, the results of the ultimate analysis, considering both geometric nonlinearities and material nonlinearities, were compared with the results of the geometric nonlinear analysis, for a more meaningful investigation of the ultimate behavior of steel cable-stayed bridges in the construction stage.

  • The energy conservation and exergy loss of a fully thermally coupled distillation commercialized as the divided wall column are compared with those of a conventional two-column system for ternary separation. The used example for the comparison is the benzene-toluene-m-xylene separation process widely used in a petrochemical plant. The design procedure of the fully thermally coupled distillation column is explained, and the energy requirement is compared using the HYSYS. When the same numbers of trays are utilized, the fully thermally coupled distillation column uses 28.2% less energy and 10.4% more exergy loss. The increase of the exergy loss is due to the additional mixing from the bidirectional inter-linking and the temperature elevation in the reboiler from the increased pressure at the bottom of the main column.

  • Recently, the concrete-steel hybrid extradosed bridge has been proposed as alternative bridge type at long span site. The hybrid extradosed bridge adopts light orthogonal deck girder instead of heavy concrete deck girder at the center span of bridge, and it enables to construct long-span bridge. And also, for this bridge type the decrease of self-weight of girder enables to reduce girder depth and side span length of extradosed bridge, so its type has more efficient structural behavior and makes it possible to perform optimal bridge design. Therefore, it is very important to set up the procedure and parameters of optimal design for concrete-steel hybrid extradosed bridge. In this study, the effects of design parameters (the variation of pylon height, bridge deck depth and orthogonal deck girder length) are discussed. And numerical analysis and sensitivity analysis are carried out according to these parameters. And design weight values about these parameters are quantitatively suggested to reflect characteristics of concrete-steel hybrid bridge.

  • In recent years, the type of bridge where cables such as suspension bridge and cable-stayed bridge are the main factors in the construction of long-range bridges has been soaring. The effects of cables on these structures are very large, and for structural analysis, it is necessary to study the cable and the structural changes according to the mode characteristics of the cables. In particular, cables are directly connected to camber adjustment, which conveys load effects on girders to tower, and are important components in the overall structure, and since the initial tension on the construction is compared with the tension over time, this study was conducted to help identify the condition of the bridge's aging and abnormalities. Therefore, in this study, the characteristics of the mode from the mode analysis through the impact hammer to the mass of the cable and the change in the length of the cable are analyzed.

  • With the development of technology worldwide, bridges are becoming larger, and the number of old bridges is also rapidly increasing. Monitoring the structural health of large, aging bridges is essential to preventing large-scale accidents. In this study, the application of a LoRa low-power wide-area network (LPWAN)-based wireless measurement system was investigated, and a LoRa wireless measurement system was established in the cable-stayed bridge section of Cheonsa Bridge, located in Shinan-gun, Jeollanam-do, Korea. The applicability of the LoRa LPWAN-based wireless monitoring system to large marine bridges was reviewed by comparing the performance and economic feasibility with wire-based monitoring systems that were built and operated by establishing a measurement system for the pylons, cables, and reinforcing girders of the bridge.

  • This study was conducted to develop a thin paving technique using polymer epoxy resin materials which is considered as a durable pavement materials. The mechanical performance characteristics of the polymer epoxy resin materials were also evaluated to confirm the validity as a pavement materials. To estimate the performance properties of the materials, bending tests and bonding tests were performed using freeze-thaw and ultra-violet rays to accelerate the aging of materials. In addition, HYUNStay, a commercial structural analysis program for cable-stayed bridges, was used to compare the effect of paving materials between the polymer epoxy resin materials and the conventional ones on the reduction of cable tension and on the stability of the main tower. According to the test results, it is noted that the thin paving technique using polymer epoxy resin materials can improve the performance and durability of pavement compared to the conventional one.

  • Recently, many ocean bridges that connect land to island or island to island have been constructed along with the improvement of the nation's economy. Long-span bridges can be categorized as suspension bridge, cable-stayed bridge, arch bridge and truss bridge. In this study, correction with respect to construction error can be presented on site through the monitoring of the cable tension change of real structure for four major construction stages so that construction accuracy, including the management of profiles, can be improved. A vibration method, the so-called indirect method that uses the cable's natural frequency changes from the acceleration sensor installed on the cable, is applied in measuring cable tension. In this study, the estimation formula for the effective length of cable with damper is presented by comparing and analyzing between actual measurement and analysis result for the change of the cable's effective length. By the way, it is known that the reliability of estimating cable tension by applying the former method that uses the net distance from damper to anchorage is low. Therefore, for future reference of the maintenance stage, the presented formula for estimating the effective length of cable can be used as a reference for the rational decision-making, such as the re-tensioning and replacement of cable.

  • The setting time which is the important element for the determination of slip-up speed of Slip-Form system is the hardening time of early-age concrete when the in place concrete has minimum compressive strength before the concrete appears out of Slip-Form system. But it is very difficult to predict the setting time because it depends on not only the composition ratio of concrete but also various conditions of construction fields. Thus, the technique to estimate accurately and continuously the hardening time of early-age in place concrete during operating Slip-Form system is necessary to guarantee the safety of Slip-Form system and the maintenance of the shape of concrete. Ultrasonic wave-based nondestructive testing methods have the advantages which are accurate and continuous in estimating concrete compressive strength. Of such methods, the method using surface wave which propagates along the surface of material is effective for thick member such as a pylon. Thus, in this paper a study on the determination of slip-up speed for Slip-Form system using surface wave velocity is performed. The relation between the slip-up speed of Slip-Form system and the setting time is formulated, and the surface wave velocity is estimated from continuous wavelet transform of the numerical results for surface wave propagation. Finally, the accuracy of this method according to the distance between the wave source and receivers and the relation between the estimated surface wave velocity and the elastic modulus are investigated.
