PCBs(Polychlorinated biphenyls) in air and plants were measured every two weeks at Hankyong University located in Ansung, Kyoung ki province from July to November in 1999. The percentage of tri-CBs(PCB 28) and tetra-CBs(PCB 52) is 49% of the total PCBs in air, which shows these two components are the major congeners. A correlation coefficient(r) of PCB congeners detected in two plants is 0.83 (p<0.01), indicating that the plants can be used as a passive sampler to indirectly estimate the pollution levels of residual PCBs in the environmental even if they have different physicochemical properties. The average ratio of PCB 110/PCB 52 is higher in plants as 0.5, 2.9 and 2.5 respectively in the air and mulberry leaves as well as scallions, which comes from the higher lipophilicity of PCB 110 rather than the ratio of PCB 110/PCB 52 in the air.
Fimbristylis fimbristyloides (F. Muell.) Druce (Cyperaceae) belonging to Fimbristylis sect. Fuscae Ohwi, which has been ambiguous in terms of its distribution and taxonomic substance in Korea, was found on Amtae-do Island, Sinan-gun, Jeollanam-do in Korea. F. fimbristyloides is a small species that is approximately 5-15 cm tall and differs greatly from most taxa in that the spikelets are laterally compressed. In particular, F. fimbristyloides is similar to F. ovata but is distinguished by the height of the plants, falcated leaves, the number and size of spikelets per inflorescence, glabrous styles, the size of the achenes, and the presence of achene stalks. A description, differences from related species, a key to the taxa and photographs of Korean F. fimbristyloides are provided in this paper.
This study was carried out to offer the natural restoration plan of river by objective analyzing the vegetation and flora around stream in Mt. Midong and to develop the materials for restoration. The flora were summarized as 95 taxa; 33 families, 84 genera, 81 species and 14 varieties. The naturalized plants were 15 taxa; Dactylis glmerata, Panicum dichotomiflorum, Rumex crispus, Chenopodium glaucum, Trifolium repens, Hibiscus trionum, Oenothera lamarckiana, Ambrosia artemisifolia var. elatior, Aster pilosus, Erigeron annuus, Erigeron canadensis, Coreopsis tinctoria, Taraxacum officinale, Bidens frondosa and Cosmos bipinnatus. The major dominant species was Phragmites japonica in all communites and semi dominant species were Salix gracilistyla, Phalaris arundinacea, Bidens frondosa and Persicaria thunbergii. To restore the river, we must consider the biddiversity, habitats and so forth, and use the plant materials like Phragmites japonica, Salix gracilistyla, Persicaria thunbergii and Veronica anagallis-aquatica.

To investigate the characteristics of seasonal environment and phytoplankton community structure in the coastal area of Dokdo, a survey of Dokdo around waters was conducted during the four seasons. Phytoplankton of 4 phylum 72 species in four seasons were collected in Dokdo around water. The seasonal mean abundance of phytoplankton were $3.32{\times}10^4cells\;L^{-1}$ in winter, $1.04{\times}10^4cells\;L^{-1}$ in spring, $0.28{\times}10^4cells\;L^{-1}$ in summer, and $4.86{\times}10^4cells\;L^{-1}$ in autumn in Dokdo around water. During winter, the diatoms Chaetoceros spp. had dominated. During spring, when the nutrients in the euphotic layer were depleted, the nano-flagellates and Cryptomonas appeared at surface layer. In summer, the abundance of phytoplankton was relatively low, which lead to occurrence of diatoms such as genus of Chaetoceros, Rhizosolenia, and Skeletonema. In autumn, Pseudo-nitzschia spp. was the most dominant species and tropical species such as Amphisolenia sp. and Ornithocercus magnificus were observed, implying that they may have introduced within warm water current such as Kurosiwo Current. Therefore, although natural phytoplankton communities in the vicinity water of Dokdo are mainly influenced by Tsushima Warm Current branched Kurosiwo Current, their population dynamics was affected on the spatio-temporal change of physicochemical factors by short-term wind events, namely "island effect". Long-term survey research is needed to facilitate food-web response in marine ecosystem associated with phytoplankton biomass and physicochemical factors including the warm water current in oligotrophic offshore water of Dokdo, which may have significant role for sustainable use of Dokdo.
M. aeruginosa isolated from Lake Paldang was cultured in CB medium, and then each wet plants put into the cultured medium at a rate of 0.5 g and 2.5 g wet wt/l. There was slight inhibition by the input of cattail and iris of each 0.5 g wet wt/l cultured medium, but showed no reduction in algal growth in other flasks. Among the applied plants, ginkgo, pine needles, big cone pine, waterreed and water chestnut had an effect on inhibition of algal growth at the input of 2.5 g wet wt/l. Plants which were dried for 3 days at $50^{\circ}C$ introduced into the testing flask for 10days cultured at dose rates of 2.5 g/l. When chlorophyll a concentration was remarkably high as $802.6\;{\mu}g/l$ after five days, there was noticeably less chlorophyll compared with control at a rate of 98% by big cone pine, 96% by ginkgo, 95% by pine needles and 86% by rice straw, respectively. To examine the effect of plant extracts on algal growth, big cone pine and water chestnut were put to the amount of 1.25 g liquid extracts/l. Chlorophyll a concentration and cell density decreased to the extent of average 43% as compared with the beginning of experiment, but when concentration of chlorophyll a increased a most high, the inhibition of algal growth by liquid extracts did not affect at all. When a quantity of plant equivalent to 2.5 g liquid extracts/l inhibited the growth of algae by 95% after nine days.

This study examined the Gangwon Province's current implementation of its elimination of invasive plants and explored a plan to effectively manage invasive plants. The percentage of the distribution of the plants was 39.6% for riverside areas, 23.3% for roadside areas, 12.4% for roadside & riverside areas, and 4.6% for areas around farm land and river banks. To ensure the systematic management of invasive plants, the current study suggests a) developing an invasive plants monitoring and management system; b) reinvigorating the participation of residents, private organizations, and military posts; c) planting of native replacement plants and the conversion of the locations as attractions, and d) nurturing the project for using invasive plants. For policy directions to be pursued based on the results of the study, the following are suggested: a) improving laws and systems regarding invasive plants, b) developing a cooperative system for managing invasive plants, c) implementing the training of civilian professionals, d) implementing the elimination of invasive plants, e) developing replacement plants for cities and counties, f) fostering industries that tap into invasive plants, and g) using the Han River Water System Management Fund for funding and greater efficiency.
The flora of the Hwaomsa Valley in Chirisan National Park, Chollanam-do, Korea, was investigated during May 5-7, July 10-13, and September 28-30, 1990. The number of vascular plants which investigated in the present study were enumerated as 2 classes, 31 orders, 83 families, 175 genera, 216 species, 24 varieties, and 7 forma.
Cotyledon segments of korean ginseng produced somatic embryos when cultured on MS basal medium, whereas plumule or excised axis explants did not. histological examination revealed that the cells in proximal region of cotyledon turned meristematic and densely cytoplasmic was composed of smaller and more densely cytiplasmic cells than the subepidermal cells. however, in the case both epidermis and subepidermal cells were almost the same in size and cytoplasmic density, the embryo originated from multiple cells.
