  • The annual individual and collective doses to the thyroids of four age-dependent groups due to the in-take of I-131 released from the Younggwang nuclear power plant NU-1 & 2, Korea, are estimated using the model presented in ICRP 29. Sensitivity and robustness of the model are analyzed. In case of 0.12% fuel defect during normal operation, the collective dose is founded to be 3.05${\times}10^{-3}$man-thyroid-Sv, which is higher than the value calculated by the GASPAR code, 2.3${\times}10^{-3}$man-thyroid-Sv. The maximal individual annual doses resulting from an acute release are higher than those calculated under the assumption of continuous release by $1.4{\sim}1.7$ times. The most important pathway to the infant is milk and, in contrast, that to child, teen and adult is ingestion of crops. The model used is the calculation appears to be influenced by the variables such as roubstness-index. The weighted committed dose equivalent obtained by the ICRP 29 model is slightly higher than that calculated by the three-compartment model.

  • Gaussian plume model is used to assess environmental dose for abnormal radioactive release in nuclear facility, but there has a problem to use it for complex terrain. In this report, MATTEW and WIND04 Codes which had been verified were used to calculate wind field in the complex terrain. Under the base of these codes principle, wind fields were obtained from the calculation of the finite difference approximation for advection-diffusion equations which satisfy the mass-conservative law. Particle concentrations and external doses were calculated by using PIC model which approximate the particle to radioactive cloud, and atmospheric diffusion of the particles from the random walk method. The results show that the adjusted wind fields and the distributions of the exposure dose vary with the topography of the complex terrain.

  • A practical methodology for the determination of derived intervention levels (DILs) on relocation following an accidental release of radionuclides was designed based on dose rate on the ground. The influence of DILs was investigated with respect to the change of parameter values, which are dependent on socio-environmental characteristics in distinction from temporary and permanent relocations. The DILs on relocation showed a distinct difference depending on effective removal half-life of radionuclides following a deposition, delay time in measurement and residential characteristics. In particular, the delay time. In measurement was an important factor in determination of DILs in the case of an assumption that dose rate on the ground declines in a power function, not in an exponential function. The DILs showed lower numerical values as longer effective half-life, longer delay time In measurement and longer exposure time.

  • The internal dose by food consumption mostly accounts for radiological dose of public around nuclear power plants (NPPs). But, food consumption rates applied to off-site dose calculation in Korea which are the result of field investigation around Kori NPP by the KAERI (Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute) in 1988, are not able to reflect the latest dietary characteristics of Korean. The food consumption rates to be used for radiological dose assessment in Korea are based on the maximum individual of US NRC (Nuclear Regulatory Commssion) Regulatory Guide 1.109. However, the representative individual of the critical group is considered in the recent ICRP (International Commission on Radiological Protection) recommendation and European nations' practice. Therefore, the study on the re-establishment of the food consumption rates for individual around nuclear power plant sites in Korea was carried out to reflect on the recent change of the Korean dietary characteristics and to apply the representative individual of critical group to domestic regulations. The Ministry of Health and Welfare Affairs has investigated the food and nutrition of nations every 3 years based on the Law of National Health Improvement. The statistical data such as mean, standard deviation, various percentile values about food consumption rates to be used for the representative individual of the critical group were analyzed by using the raw data of the national food consumption survey in $2001{\sim}2002$. Also, the food consumption rates for maximum individual are re-estimated.

  • Disused Sealed Radioactive Sources (DSRSs) are stored temporally in the centralized storage facility of Korea Radioactive Waste Agency (KORAD) and planned to be disposed in the low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste (LILW) disposal facility in Gyeongju city. In this study, preliminary post-closure safety assessment was performed for DSRSs in order to draw up an optimum disposal plan. Two types of disposal options were considered, i.e. engineered vault type disposal and rock cavern type disposal which were planned to be constructed and operated respectively in LILW disposal facility in Gyeongju city. Assessment end-point was individual effective dose of critical group and calculated by using GoldSim code. In normal scenario, the maximum dose was estimated to be approximately $1{\times}10^{-7}mSv/yr$ for both disposal options. It meant that both options had sufficient safety margin when compared with regulatory limit (0.1 mSv/yr). Otherwise, in well scenario, the maximum dose exceeded regulatory limit of 1 mSv/yr in engineered vault type disposal and the exposure dose was mainly contributed by $^{226}Ra$, $^{210}Pb$ (daughter nuclide of $^{226}Ra$) and $^{237}Np$ (daughter nuclide of $^{241}Am$). For rock cavern type disposal, even though the peak dose satisfied regulatory limit, the exposure doses by $^{14}C$ and $^{237}Np$ were relatively high above 10% of regulatory limit. Therefore, it is necessary to exclude $^{14}C$, $^{226}Ra$ and $^{241}Am$ for two type of disposal options and additional management such as long-term storage and development of disposal container for those radionuclides should be performed before permanent disposal for conservative safety and security.

  • This article suggests the radionuclides which should be considered more important to the offsite consequence assesment during a nuclear power plant accident. For this purpose, the relative importance to the early health effects of released radionuclides on the major organs during the accident is estimated under the assumption of the same release fraction. The inventories of the 25 elements, 54 nuclides selected in the Reactor Safety Study are calculated by ORIGEN 2 code. The organs of interest in the estimation are G. I. track, bone marrow, thyroid and lung. The result shows the relative potential importance of radionuclides as follows: For G.I. track, Np, Ce, Ru, Y, and Zr are of importance in sequence, Np, I, La, Sr, Ba for bone marrow, I and Te for thyroid, Cm, Ce, Ru, Pu, Zr for lung. In addition to iodine and noble gases, therefore, the potential contribution of those nuclides listed above to the offsite consequences should not be overlooked for some accidents of particular sequence.

  • A multi-attribute utility analysis was investigated as a tool for the decision support of countermeasures in early phase of a nuclear accident. The utility function of attributes was assumed to be the second order polynomial expressions, and the weighting constant of attributes was determined using a swing weighting method. Because the main objective of this study focuses on the applicability of a multi-attribute utility analysis as a tool for the decision support of countermeasures in early phase of a nuclear accident, less quantifiable attributes were not included due to lack of information. In postulated accidental scenarios for the application of the designed methodology, the variation of the numerical values of total utility for the considered actions, e.g. sheltering, evacuation and no action, was investigated according to the variation of attributes. As a result, it was shown that the numerical values of total utility for the actions are distinctly different depending on the exposure dose and monetary value of dose. As increasing in both attributes, the rank of the numerical values of total utility increased for evacuation, which is more extreme action than for sheltering, while that of no action decreased. As expected probability of high dose is higher, the break-even values for the monetary value of dose, which are the monetary value of dose when the ranking of actions is changed, were lower. In audition, as aversion psychology for dose is higher, the break-even values for dose were lower.

  • The influence of the relative humidity, the temperature and the velocity of supply air on evaporation rate has been studied with non-boiling forced evaporation system in order to treat very low level radioactive liquid wastes produced from the decontamination and decommissioning activities. Experimental data on the evaporation rate have been obtained with the divers variables and experimental equation of air velocity was also obtained by the correlation of those data. The decontamination factor of this system was also obtained by the experimental data from a simulated liquid waste containing Cs-137 radio isotope ; $DF=10^4$. Since the commercial system will be operated for the treatment of the very low level radioactive liquid waste produced from decontamination & decommissioning of TRIGA Mark-II&III research reactor, the environmental assessment has been conducted to improve the operational safety. Exposure dose rate for an individual member of general public was assessed, and it showed that it was very lower than individual dose limits. The release of radioactivity of radioisotope material (Cs-137) to the environment was assessed, and result showed that it was $4.637{\times}10^{-14}\;{\mu}Ci/cc$.
