  • This work presents the free vibration characteristics of laminated composite corrugated rectangular plates using the analytical method. Because it is very difficult to determine its mechanical behavior of 3-dimensional corrugated structures analytically, the equivalent homogenization model is adapted to investigate the overall mechanical behavior of corrugated structures. The corrugated element can be homogenized as an orthotropic material. Both the effective extensional and flexural stiffness of this homogenized equivalent orthotropic material are considered in the analysis. The present analytical results are validated by those obtained from 3D finite element analysis based on shell elements. The natural frequencies and global vibration mode shapes obtained from present analytical and finite element analysis are presented. Some numerical results are presented to check the effect of the geometric properties.

  • This paper aims at comparing and analyzing shear buckling characteristics between sinusoidal corrugation shape and trapezoidal one. For this, I adopted the equal-length trapezoidal corrugation and sinusoidal one for the analytical models, and analyzed their shear buckling characteristics through linear buckling analysis and on its theory. Generally, the shear buckling shapes of corrugated steel plates are classified into local buckling, global buckling, and interactive buckling from the two buckling modes. Sinusoidal corrugation shape, unlike trapezoidal corrugation, does not have flat sides, which causes another tendency in shear buckling mode. Especially, the changes and different aspects of shear buckling on the boundary between local buckling and global buckling appear in different corrugation shapes. According to the analysis results, interactive buckling mode appeared on the boundary of local buckling and global bucking in trapezoidal corrugation. However, in the case of corrugated steel plates with sinusoidal configuration, interactive buckling mode appeared in the part where global bucking takes place. Besides, trapezoidal shapes are of advantages on shear buckling resistance in the local buckling section, and so are sinusoidal shapes in the global buckling section.

  • This paper presents the numerical results of six corrugation models which compute the stress behaviours and stress levels of the membrane structure under the hydrostatic pressure of cryogenic liquids and thermal loadings using a non -linear finite element analysis program. A three-dimensional analysis of various corrugation geometries was performed on the maximum mean normal stress distributions along the upper surface of the membrane sheet. Comparisons of the FEM results for various geometry models of the corrugation are presented, which shows that the corrugated configuration of the ring knot model can be effectively performed for the combined forces such as the hydrostatic pressure and thermal loading in comparison with the Technigaz type corrugation which has small comer and apex curvatures. The FEM results show that the ring knot corrugation can be used for the deepest depth, 180m of the LNG storage tank in comparison with other corrugation models.

  • The free vibration characteristics of corrugated laminated composite plates with axial stiffeners is investigated using the Rayleigh-Ritz method. The plate is stiffened by beams with open cross-section area. The equivalent homogenization model is used for the corrugated laminated composite plates. This homogenization model is treated a corrugated plate as an orthotropic plate that has different material properties in two perpendicular directions. The motion of equivalent plate is represented on the basis of the first order shear deformation theory (FSDT) to account for the effect of rotary inertia and transverse shear deformation. Stiffeners are considered as discrete elements to predict the local vibration mode to be generated by the presence of stiffeners. To validate the proposed analytical approach, natural frequencies and vibration mode shapes from the analytical method are compared with those from the FEA by ANSYS.

  • A nonlinear finite element analysis is performed to evaluate the sealing capability and stress of dust covers for the ball joint of an automotive steering system. The analysis is performed for two types of dust covers: wrinkle type and pot type. The assembly condition and operation condition are analyzed, and the maximum stress and contact normal stress at the ribs are evaluated. It is confirmed that the sealing capability of both types is fairly good, but the wrinkle type is better than the pot type in terms of the maximum stress.

  • The aims of this study is to classify the lower somatotype of adult women and appearance analysis on the shape of flare skirts by using the image processing. Also We have made skirts in order to analyze the various types of appearance of flare skirts by using the image processing. The subjects for our wear test lower somatotype, who were controlled in their waist, abdomen and hip shapes. The flare skirts used for wear test were 112 types(combinated 14 fabric type and 8 lower somatotype). The effect of lower somatotype on the shape of flare skirts was determined by the horizontally hem line section shape and the silhouette of flare skirts with image processing. The data were analyzed by using analysis of variance and Turkey, Duncan multiple range test. The results obtained are summarized as follows: It is shown that the fabric weight elongation differs in fabrics properties, in direction of textures. The shape horizontal section of flare skirt hem line has differed with the number of nodes, wave-height of nodes and breadth of silhouette by fabrics properties and lower somatotype. It is noticed that the breadth of flare skirts by the silhouette has high correlation with the drape ability of fabrics and lower somatotype. Results for our flare skirts show changes in amplitude and mean with fabrics, somatotype. Therefore we can say that gray-level histograms are correlated with changes in appearance, differences in drape spacing and related fabric properties and their somatotype.

  • In this paper, the effect of wrinkling on the failure behavior of thin membrane was studied using geometrically nonlinear shell element post-buckling analysis with global-local analysis strategy. In the analysis, double-edge notched and single-edge notched tensile specimen configurations were considered. The analyses were performed for both cases with allowing and suppressing the wrinkling deformation. The results were investigated focusing on the effect of wrinkle development on the variation of J-integral values at the cut tip. The effect of cut lengths and the specimen lengths were also systematically studied.

  • This work investigates the elastic buckling characteristics of laminated composite trapezoidal corrugated plates with simply supported edges using the analytical method. In the analysis, three types of in-plane loading conditions: uniaxial, biaxial and shear loads are considered. Because it is very difficult to determine the mechanical behavior of 3-dimensional corrugated structures analytically, the equivalent homogenization model is adapted to investigate the overall mechanical behavior of corrugated plates. The corrugated element is homogenized as an orthotropic material. The previous formulae for bending rigidities of corrugated plate are adapted in this paper. The comparisons of the proposed analytical results with those of FEA based on the shell element are made to verify the proposed analytical method. In the comparison study both the critical buckling loads and the buckling mode shapes are presented. Some numerical results are presented to check the effect of the geometric properties.

  • The large deformation of inflatable membrane structure is numerically and experimentally considered in this paper. The numerical algorithm of wrinkling based on Miller and Hedgepeth membrane theory is developed using user material(UMAT) subroutine written by FORTRAN. Wrinkled area and deformed shapes of inflatable membrane structures are investigated by using ABAQUS with UMAT subroutine of wrinkling algorithm.
