  • Purpose: The Purpose of this study was to test the effects of the Muscles Along Meridians Release Therapy on the function of upper limb as a means of nursing intervention. Method: The design used for this study was quasi - experimental with a nonequivalent control group pretest - post test design. The subjects were 40 stroke patients who were admitted in K oriental medical center of K University. This study was carried out from 6, May to 18, October, 2003. The experimental group (21) and the control group (19) were assigned by means of Participation order. The experimental group took Muscles Along Meridians Release Therapy on affected upper limb for 3 minutes daily for 2 weeks. Outcome were assessed by Modified Ashworth Scale, VAS, Fugl - Meyer score and goniometer. Data were analysed by SPSS PC. Result: After 2 weeks of treatment, function of affected upper limb, elbow joint spasticity were significantly better than control group, but, there was no significant difference in pain between experimental group and control group. Conclusion: The above results state that the Muscles Along Meridians Released Therapy could be an effective intervention for improving upper limb function and elbow joint spasticity of stroke patients.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of neuromuscular electrical stimulation(NMES) on the spasticity of elbow flexor. Ten spastic hemiplegia who have been at EUL-JI medical college hospital in Taejon with age range of 35 to 70 years$(56.8\pm9.5)$, were participated in this study. The subjects (5male, 5female) took neuromuscular electrical stimulation therapy on the triceps of the affected elbow. To compare the effect of the treatment, the grade of spasticity of affected elbow flexor was measured at pre-treatment and the end of each weeks using modified Ashworth scale. Then, the range of extension of the affected elbow was measured at pre-treatmen and the end of each weeks using full circle goniometer. The data were analyzed with ANOVA to determine significant differences with the passage of time. The results were as follows: 1. ANOVA test showed significant differences in reducing spasticity of NMES group with the passage of time (p<.01). 2. ANOVA test showed significant differences in increasing range of motion with the passage of time of NMES group(p<.01). The neuromuscular electrical stimulation is a effective method to reduce the spasticity of elbow flexor.

  • Many patients have difficulties after stroke. Spasticity is an important one of that difficulties. So in these days, its management is becoming a major issue in rehabilitation. Gagamyounjo-tang was administered to a patient have had spasticity after stroke include Hyulhu(血虛) symptoms. And check the modified Ashworth Scale, Motor grade and VAS for being in the hospital. After treated with Gagamyounjo-tang, Modified Ashworth Scale, Motor grade and VAS have improved, and most of all symptoms about hyulhu(血虛) was disappeared. Based on this result, this study shows that Gagamyounjo-tang was effective in spasticity after stroke especially included Hyulhu(血虛) symptoms.
