  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes of kinetic and kinematic parameters in obstacle gaits after 12 weeks of an aquatic exercise program. Eight female elders walked in four different heights of obstacles(0, 2.5, 5.1, & 15.2cm) on their self-selected speed. The ROM of hip was significantly increased after the aquatic exercise program. Swing and Stance duration were decreased. The step length was significantly increased and the step width was decreased. After the exercise program the clearance between the right foot and the top of obstacle(except 15.2cm) increased and the crossing speed was increased. The braking force, propulsive force, braking impulse, and propulsive impulse were significantly changed after the aquatic exercise program. The 12 weeks of the aquatic exercise program resulted in lower body strength and balance gains in female elders. The improvements were associated with changes in kinetic and kinematic parameters leading to an obstacle-crossing speed and a safer lower-limb control. The aquatic exercise program is suggested as an effective intervention to promote gait ability and prevent fall-related to the injuries.

  • This study was performed to investigate the effects of various media compositions in regeneration of Lilium lancifolium. The adventitious bud initiation from microscale was the best on MS medium supplemented with BAP 1.0 mg/L and NAA 0.1 mg/L after 4 weeks of culture. However, from bulbscales, adventitious bud initiation was the best in dark condition on MS medium supplemented with BAP 0.5 mg/L and NAA 0.1 mg/L. On the other hand, callus induction was found to be the best from the microscales incubated in complete dark condition for 8 weeks on MS medium supplemented with 2,4-D 1.0 mg/L and BAP 0.1 mg/L. The highest plantlet regeneration from callus was obtained after incubation in the light condition for 8 weeks on MS medium supplemented with NAA 0.5 mg/L and BAP 0.1 mg/L. Rooting of shoots was obtained easily on MS medium and the plantlets were transferred to soil pots after 8 weeks. The chromosome analysis of the root tip cells was revealed that the callus-derived plantlets had normal chromosome number, 2n=24. No variation was observed in the morphology of the plantlets.

  • The purpose of this study is to find the light intensity which induced maximum gathering rate and to observe the variation of the gathering rate both in daytime and tat night by using Striped puffer, Fugu xanthopterus (Temminck et Schlegel). An experimental tank(360L$\times$50W$\times$55H cm) was set up in a dark room. An illumination system was attached to the end of one side of the tank to control horizontal light intensity. Eight artificial light sources were prepared by combination of three light bulbs (10W, 60W, 100W) and eight filters. During the experiment water depth was maintained 50 cm level in the tank. The tank was marked into six longitudinal sections each being 60cm long to observe the distribution of fish. The fish were acclimatized in dark condition for 50 minutes prior to the main experiment. Upon turning on the light, the number of fish in each section was counted 60 times every 30 seconds, and the gathering rate was obtained from the average number of fish in each section. The light intensity inducing maximum gathering rate was 298.56 lux (188.44-444.96 lux) at daytime and 298.56 lux (188.44-444.96 lux) at night. The variation of the gathering rate of fish in illumination time was increasing trend fluctuately and did not show any distinctive difference between day and night.

  • The author carried out an experiment to find out the response of rock trout, Hexagrammos otakii (Jordan et starks) to the color lights. The experimental tank (360L$\times$50W$\times$55H cm) was set up in a dark room. Six longitudinal sections with 60cm intervals are marked in the tank to observe the loction of the fish. Water depth in the tank was kept 50cm level. Light bulbs of 20W at the both ends of the tank projected the light horizontally into the tank. Two different colored filters were selected from four colors of red, blue, yellow, and white, and they were placed in front of the light bulbs to make different colors of light. Light intensity were controlled by use of auxiliary filters intercepted between the bulb and the filter. The fishes were acclimatized in the dark for 50 minutes before they were 3employed in the experiment. Upon turning on the light, the number of fish in each section was counted 40 times in 30 second intervals, and the mean of the number of fish in each section was given as the gathering rate of the fish. The colors favourited by the fish was found in the order of white, yellow, red and blue in day time, and red, yellow, blue and white at night time. The gathering rate of fish on illumination period was small and comparatively fluctuated with stability. The difference of the gathering rates on two different colors of light was great.

  • A migraine was a headache disorder characterized by recurrent moderate to severe headaches. The diagnosis was based on clinical signs and symptoms. Medication, physical therapy, nerve block, and nerve stimulation could be applied for treatment. This report described a case of severe migraine without aura that lasted several weeks periodically in a 59-year-old woman. Periodic headache had lasted for more than 14 years, and although she took medicines and nerve blocks, severe pain (VAS 7) was persisted. We recommended her to use the thermo-spinal massage device (CGM MB-1401, CERAGEM Inc., Cheonan, South Korea) continuously three times a week applying in semi-automatic mode around the neck for 40 minutes. There was no change in the pain scale in the automatic mode for the first 4 weeks. Subsequently, the semi-automatic mode of the cervical area was treated for 2 weeks to relieve the pain scale, and it was confirmed that the relieved state maintained for 2 months. This case highlighted the importance in considering thermo-spinal massage devices for managing migraine without aura.

  • This study was made to investigate the antioxidative effects of Geagibokrounghwan on the hepatic and renal lesion induced by cholesterol in mouse. The normal group was fed basal diet and water ; control groups were fed basal diet containing 0.5% of cholesterol ; test groups were fed the Geagibokrounghwan extract($10m{\ell}/kg$) after fed basal diet containing 0.5% of cholesterol for 6 weeks. In the liver and kidney of control group, lipid peroxidation(LPO) was significantly increased, however, the activities of superoxidation dismutase(SOD) and catalase and the amount of glutathion(GSH) were significantly decreased. In the liver and kidney of test group, lipid peroxidation(LPO) was decreased significantly as compared with control group. Contrary to this, the activities of superoxide dismutase(SOD), catalase and the amount of glutathion(GSH) were significantly increased. These results indicate that Geagibokrounghwan revealed the antioxidant effects, which may reduce the hepatic and renal damage induced by cholesterol in mouse.
