  • The recently constructed buildings are ensuring seismic safety with enhanced design criteria. But, the buildings unapplied enhanced design criteria are very weak. In this study, steel grid shear wall is proposed as a solution of seismic retrofit to ensure safety of the existing buildings for the earthquake. And the structural performance experiments were carried out under axial force and cyclic lateral loads. The two specimens were made of a reference RC frame and steel grid shear wall in-filled RC frame. The test setup configured with two dynamic actuators, for the axial force with a 500kN capacity actuator and for the cyclic lateral load applied with the 2,000kN actuator. Compared with control specimen, the strength, stiffness, ductility, energy dissipation capacity of the seismic retrofit structures is evaluated.

  • An experimental study was performed to investigate the axial-flexural load-carrying capacity of concrete-encased and-filled steel tube (CEFT) columns. To restrain local buckling of longitudinal bars and to prevent premature failure of the thin concrete encasement, the use of U-cross ties was proposed. Five eccentrically loaded columns were tested by monotonic compression. The test parameters were axial-load eccentricity, spacing of ties, and the use of concrete encasement. Although early cracking occurred in the thin concrete encasement, the maximum axial loads of the CEFT specimens generally agreed with the strengths predicted considering the full contribution of the concrete encasement. Further, due to the effect of the circular steel tube, the CEFT columns exhibited significant ductility. The applicability of current design codes to the CEFT columns was evaluated in terms of axial-flexural strength and flexural stiffness.

  • Concrete-filled tubes (CFTs) have been used in civil engineering practices as a column of buildings and a bridge pier. CFTs have several advantages over the conventional reinforced concrete columns, such as rapid construction, enhanced buckling resistance, and inherited confinement effect. However, CFT component have not been widely used in civil engineering practice, since the design provisions among codes significantly vary each other. It leads to conservative design of CFT component. In this study, the design provisions of AISC and EC4 for CFT component were examined, based on the extensive test results conducted by previous researchers and finite element analysis results obtained in this study. Especially, the focus was made on the validation of P-M interaction curves proposed by AISC and EC4. From the results, it was found that the current design codes considerably underestimated the strength of CFT component under general combined axial load and bending. Finally, the modified P-M interaction curve was proposed and successfully verified.

  • The compressive strengths of simply supported columns may be significantly increased by reinforcing them with an assemblage of cross-arms and stayed struts connecting both ends of the columns and the cross-arm members. The purpose of the stayed struts and cross-arms is to introduce partial restraints against translation and rotation, thereby decreasing the effective buckling length of the column. In this study, buckling strengths of the assembled column system have been quantitatively evaluated from the theoretical methods based on both the equivalent spring model and the stiffness matrix formulation. And the results were compared with those from elastic/inelastic analysis using a finite element analysis package program, ABAQUS, for verification purpose. Expected compressive strength curves have been proposed for the assembled column system as a function of slenderness ratio of the simply supported column.

  • Two types of cast-in-place concrete-filled hollow PC (HPC1, HPC2) columns were developed to reduce lifting load of heavy-weight PC columns and to improve the structural integrity of joints. To form the hollow PC columns, a couple of prefabricated PC panels was used for HPC1, and special hoops were used for HPC2. Lateral pressure of wet concrete on PC faces was measured while placing the concrete inside the columns. To evaluate the seismic resistance, full scale specimens of two HPC columns and a conventional RC column were tested under combined axial compression and lateral cyclic loading. The test results showed that the structural performance of the proposed HPC columns such as intial stiffness, maximum strength, and displacement ductility was comparable to that of the conventional RC column, but the energy dissipation of HPC2 slightly decreased after rebar-buckling. However, all the test specimens satisfied the energy dissipation requirement specified in ACI 374.

  • An experimental study was carried out to elicit important factors causing cracks and rupture of steel members and their elements under imposed large repeated deformations, and of the quantitative relationships among the important physical factors leading to failure. Each of twenty-eight angles and nine thin-plates served as the specimen and was subjected to repeated axial load after undergoing inelastic buckling. Particular attention was paid to the effects of loading pattern, failure mode and cross-sectional shape on the very-low-cycle failure behavior under loading repetitions of the order of a few to twenty. The experimental results show that energy dissipation capacity depends heavily on the entire history of loading, the failure mode, the slenderness ratio and the width-to-thickness ratio. No simple quantitative relations were observed between the initiation of the visible cracks or rupture and the energy dissipation capacity. The maximum values of residual "net" strains are found to range from 25% to 40%, independent of the test parameters.

  • Cross-beam in the existing temporary bridge system is usually installed to prevent the lateral-torsional buckling of girders and to promote the construction efficiency. However, most of this cross-beams are connected to the girder web by bolts, and therefore, gravitational load resisting capacity of the cross-beams are negligibly small. In recent years, new temporary bridge system, in which the cross-beams and girders are connected to resist the external loads as a unit, was developed. In this paper, we present the experimental and analytical study results pertaining to the structural behavior and load carrying capacity of new temporary bridge system. From the results of study, it was found that the continuous cross-beam increased the flexural rigidity and reduced the maximum flexural stress in the girder. In addition, it was also found that the new temporary bridge system developed is more appropriate for the application in the long-span temporary bridge.

  • The fuel storage vessel installed in CNG vehicles can be largely divided into 3 parts: head, cylinder, and dome. Studies of the cylinder and dome parts have already been performed, but sufficient design data is not available about the head part. Therefore, expert field engineers heavily depend upon trial-and-error methods. Therefore, FE analysis is performed to review the hot spinning process for forming the head part of the CNG vessel using the Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) method. The effects of forming factors on the load were analyzed. The values of the factors were chosen to avoid defects in the head part and buckling, and the forming feasibility of the head part was investigated. Furthermore, a bursting test was performed to evaluate the safety of the storage vessel.

  • Strain Energy Hinge(SEH) has been used in Korea Multi-purpose Satellite(KOMPSAT) series to deploy the solar panel due to the good record of reliability. However, when it reached a desired deployment position, a large buckling force is applied to the main body. This may cause structural damage and also affect control of the satellite. Therefore, reliable dynamic analysis for the deployment system is required at a design stage. Moreover, various mission of a satellite has made the size of solar panels got bigger, so elastic effect has to be considered seriously to get more precise analysis results. In this paper, a dynamic analysis method to predict the deployment is verified by KOMPSAT-2 deployment test.

  • The connections are classified as rigid, semi+rigid, or pinned. There are two classification systems, EC3 adn Bjorhovede et al., representatively. The EC3 boundary between rigid and semi-rigid connections is in on the whole restrictive in term of the stiffness as well as the moment capacity of connections. The boundary specified by Bjorhovede et al. may not be sufficient to assure the behavior of rigid frames in some cases. In this study, it is proposed the new classification system for steel connection that depends on the reduction factor(R) of critical buckling load for unbraced semi-rigid frame expressed by the stiffness ratio($\rho$) of beam to column and the stiffness ratio(k) of connection to beam. Finally, it is examined by experimental data that new classification criteria provides a practical boundary compared wit hteh existing classifications.
