  • The CFT (Concrete Filled Steel Tube) columns became popular in high rise building construction due to not only its composite effect but also economic advantage. However, it has been pointed out in various previous researches that the current practice in CFT columns may lead the steel tube to probable local buckling at critical sections of the columns right after yielding. To resolve such a problem, the TR-CFT (Transversely Reinforced Concrete Filled Steel Tube) column is proposed to control or at least delay the local buckling state at the critical section by wrapping the CFT columns with carbon fiber sheet. The validity of the proposed column system is validated through the present paper by observing the experimental performance and comparing it with the analytical prediction of the TR-CFT columns with hish strength concrete. It is also shown that the current design code provisions such as ACI-318, in which the contribution of concrete confining effect filled in steel tube is not appropriately accounted for, may contain too much conservatism.

  • The parametric analysis of vertically braced steel pipe arch ribs was performed to evaluate their in-plane buckling strengths and ultimate load-carrying capacities. The elastic and plastic behavior of braced arch ribs, unlike those of the usual single arch ribs, are affected by such factors as the flexural rigidity of the brace member, brace and pipe ribs spacing, loading situation, and arch curvature. To analyze these effects, several parameters were included, such as the rise-to-span ratio, the second moment of the inertia ratio of the rib to the brace member, the space ratio of the brace, the space ratio of the upper and lower ribs, the initial crookedness, the slenderness ratios of the braced arch ribs, and the loading conditions were considered with live-load-to-dead-load ratios. Based on the results of the parametric analyses, a proper profile of the braced arch rib was proposed. A large-scale structural experiment was also performed to evaluate the ultimate strength of the braced arch rib. The test results were determined to reasonably coincide with the analytical ones.

  • Due to the environmental problems of fuel consumption and vehicle emission, etc., automotive makers are trying to reduce the weight of vehicles. The most effective way to reduce a vehicle weight is to use lighter materials, such as aluminum and plastics. Aluminum Intensive Vehicle(AIV) has many advantages in the aspects of weight reduction, body stiffness and model change. So, most of automotive manufacturers are attempting to develop AIV using Aluminum Space Frame(ASF). The weight of AIV can be generally reduced to about 30% than that of conventional steel vehicle without the loss of impact energy absorbing capability. And the body stiffness of AIV is higher than that of conventional steel monocoque body. In this study, Aluminum Intensive Vehicle is developed and analyzed on the basis of steel monocoque body. The energy absorbing characteristics of aluminum extrusion components are investigated from the test and simulation results. The crush and crash characteristics of AIV based on the FMVSS 208 regulations are evaluated in comparison with steel monocoque. Using these results, the design concepts of the effective energy absorbing members and the design guide line to improve crashworthiness for AIV are suggested.

  • The current design practice of an electric transmission tower is based on the allowable stress design. Design strengths of the electric transmission tower's compression member are determined by buckling the strength of the member itself without considering joint strength. There is a possibility of a joint failure prior to the buckling of a member. Therefore, in this study, joint strength is calculated for various member forces, and the shape of joint and database of strength were established. These data was compared with the member strength obtained from previous research studies based on an equivalent nonlinear analysis technique. Finally, practical evaluation and design method to distinguish failure mode in an electric transmission tower member is proposed.

  • The TR-CFT(Transversely Reinforced Concrete Filled Steel Tube) column is proposed to control or at least delay the state of local buckling at the critical section by wrapping the CFT columns with a carbon fiber sheet. In this study, an equation to determine the flexural strength of TR-CFT is proposed. The ACI-318 code, in which the contribution of the confining effect in the concrete filled steel tube is not appropriately accounted for, may be conservative. Therefore, flexural strength design equations for CFT columns and TR-CFT columns are proposed based on the concrete strain-stress curve, which contributes to the confining effect. Finally, the predicted results for the CFT and TR-CFT columns are shown to be in good agreement with actual test results.

  • For the assessment of the performance of a wind-turbine blade, a simulated loading test may be required. In this study, the blade behavior was investigated through numerical analysis using a dual-axis loading test, closely simulating the real operation conditions. The blade structure for the 100-kW-class wind-turbine system was modeled using the finite element (FE) program ANSYS. The failure criteria and buckling analysis under dual-axis loading were examined. The failure analysis, including fiber failure and inter-fiber failure, was performed with Puck's failure criterion. As the dual-axis load ratio increases, the relatively increased stress occurs at the trailing edge and skin surface 3300-3600 mm away from the root. Furthermore, it is revealed that increasing the dual-axis load ratio makes the location that is weakest against buckling move toward the root part. Thus, it is seen that the dual-axis load test may be an essential requirement for the verification of blade performance.

  • Multi-axial compression tests have been frequently conducted to evaluate the in situ properties of rock masses and the mechanical behaviors of rock strata through the model tests. Without the proper boundary condition for the model tests, the mechanical behavior of rock mass would deviate, as can be expected, from the in situ conditions. The boundary condition will affect the internal stress distribution of the specimens and cause some distortion on the measurement. In this study, a design process regarding the steel brush, which has been employed for multi-axial compression test to reduce the frictional restraint along the specimen/loading platen interface, is introduced. The individual brushes are regarded as a simple column and beam to calculate the cross-sectional size and length of the brushes in consideration of the buckling capacity and the allowable deflection.

  • The use of thin-walled flexural members has proven to be a practical way to achieve the lowest cost in the construction of prefabricated long-span, low-rise building frames in steel. On the other hand, most of these structures are subjected to corrosion due to environmental exposure, which can reduce their carrying capacity. Corrosion damage is a serious problem for these structures as it causes thickness loss. That is, the class of a section (plastic, compact, non-compact, or slender) may change from one to another due to the loss of thickness of the compression flange and web due to corrosion. In this study, the effects of corrosion on thin-walled members in long-span steel frames were evaluated with regard to the moment-rotation curve, initial stiffness, maximum load capacity, stiffness in the post-maximum capacity, and energy absorption.
