  • Molecular typing of Bacillus anthracis has been extremely difficult due to the lack of polymorphic DNA markers. Aiming to develop a DNA marker specific for Bacillus anthracis and to be able to discriminate this species from Bacillus genus, we applied the random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD)-PCR. We have identified B. anthracis from various Bacillus species. The analysis performed by RAPD clearly demonstrated substantial genetic variations among Bacillus species. This type of analysis is an easy, quick and highly discriminatory technique that may help in diagnosis of anthrax.

  • In this study, through the analysis of the growth condition and prey of the largemouth bass, we tried to understand the characteristics of the aquatic animal community depending on the composition and shape of a artificial lake. The evaluation was conducted for Ilsan lake which is one of the largest urban artificial lakes in Korea. Weight gain rate of the Zone III (eco-zone) was more rapid based on the relationship of length and weight of largemouth bass. Total 16 and 9 species of fish were found in each Zone III and Zone I, II (artificial zones), which represented significantly higher diversity of fish species in Zone III than Zone I, II. Index of relative importance(IRI) was more diverse at Zone III and when considering the hunger rate the food stress was more serious at Zone I, II. the proportion of the population of fish, Zacco platypus revealed to be the dominant species, and Squalidus gracilis majimae and Rhinogobius brunneus inhabited only Zone III naturally rich. On account of low prey species diversity of Zone I, II, the Phylum Arthropoda like Heteroptera showed relatively higher prey ratio in stomach of largemouth bass than that of Zone III. It was possible to figure out aquatic animal community characteristics indirectly through analyzing the stomach contents of largemouth bass.

  • Streams changed by artificial factor those support positive functions but also negative function to humanbeing. Time and pathway exceed the lost of structure and negative function appearing as disturbance. Therefore, it is desirable to prepare right situation to break of a vicious circle. Stream ecology was evaluated with using ichthyofauna during three years at the three disturbed sites and reference sites in Nakdong River. Forty-one species belonging three orders and ten families were identified in six surveying sites of Nakdong River during 2007~2009. Korean endemic species (14 species, 34.1%) and alien (3 species, 7.3%) were identified in Nakdong River ichthyofauna. Species number, species diversity, ecosystem structure and habitat variability of ecosystem were applied to evaluate stream ecosystem. In view of three year comprehended data at six sites; numeric instability appeared Andong Dam and Naeseongcheon sites worse than Gamcheon and reference site, otherwise more numeric diversity appeared Gamcheon and reference site than Andong Dam and Naeseongcheon. As a result of integration, sand stream including downstream of Andong dam, Naeseongcheon and Gamcheon has been having more diversified biodiversity and habitat diversity than those in the pebble stream.

  • Forest ecosystems are major reservoirs because forest lands are up to 65% of the national land of Korea. Biodiversity is the basis of forest conservation as well as development of forest ecosystem productivity. When we are going to establish biodiversity conservation strategies, however, we need to have a good eye in order that we are not limited only to species but we can also understand whole ecosystems. Therefore, to develop the biodiversity conservation strategies, global environmental problems, the development process of biodiversity on the earth, the fundamental logic of biodiversity conservation, the conservation system and steps of the conservation procedures are discussed. In conclusion, research subjects needed urgently are recommended.

수산동물의 소화 관련 효소는 pepsin(Gildberg et al., 1990;1991), chymotrypsin, trypsin(Heu et al, 1995), gastricsin(Sanchea- Chiang and Ponce, 1981) 그리고 elastase(Bjarnason et al., 1993)을 상으로 연구가 이루어지고 있다. • Small ponds, which exhibit unstable succession pattern of plankton community, are less well studied than large lakes. Recently, the importance of small ponds for local biodiversity conservation has highlighted the necessity of understanding the dynamics of biological community. In the present study, we collected zooplankton from three small reservoirs with monthly basis and analyzed their seasonal dynamics. To understand the complicated zooplankton community dynamics of small reservoirs, we categorized zooplankton species into four groups (LALF Group, Low Abundance Low Frequency; LAHF Group, Low Abundance High Frequency; HALF Group, High Abundance Low Frequency; HAHF Group, High Abundance High Frequency) based on their occurrence pattern (abundance and frequency). We compared the seasonal pattern of each group, and estimated community diversity based on temporal beta diversity contribution of each group. The result revealed that there is a relationship between groups with the same abundance but different occurrence frequencies, and copepod nauplii are common important component for both abundance and frequency. On the other hand, species included with LALF Group throughout the study period are key in terms of monthly succession and diversity. LALF Group includes Anuraeopsis fissa, Hexarthra mira and Lecane luna. However, groups containing species that only occur at certain times of the year and dominate the waterbody, HALF Group, hindered to temporal diversity. The results of this study suggest that the species-specific occurrence pattern is one key trait of species determining its contribution to total annual biodiversity of given community.

  • The ichthyofauna and the structure of fish community were surveyed from August 1995 to October 1997 at twenty one stations in the Wicheon river which is a first tributary located at the middle reach of the Nakdong river system. During the surveyed period, 40 species belonging to ten families were collected. Of them cyprinid fish occupied 65.0% (26 species) and cobitid fish 12.5% (5 species). Sixteen species (40.0%) were known as Korean endemic species. Dominant species were Zacco temmincki (15.35%), Zacco platypus (14.12%), and Squalidus gracilis majimae (11.32%). Rare species which occupied less than 0.1% of total individuals were Cyprinus carpio, Culter brevicauda, Misgurnus mizoiepis, Cobitis rotundicaudata, Leiocassis ussuriensis, Silurus asotus, Macropodus chinensis, and Channa argus. A tendancy were shown in regional distribution that Moroco oxycephalus dominated in upper stream, Zacco temmincki, Squalidus gracilis majimae, and Niwaella multifasciata in mid - upper stream, acheilognathid fishes and Zacco temmincki in mid - lower stream, and Zacco platypus and microphysogobioid fishes in lower stream. St. 9, 10, and 11 which located in mid - reach of main stream and St. 17, 18 and 19 which located in mid - reach of the Ssanggye stream had the most stable and diverse community structure.
