  • Various human activities such as the Urbanization and Industrialization are estimated the main factors to pollute the stream. Now days, numerous studies are carried out for managing non-point sources which have un-effect on water quality of streams by land-use and livestock. In case of Korea, a matter of concern that the management of Pal dang reservoir - the main water resources of the national capital region - has been occurring. Especially, large-scale constructed-wetlands are planned and constructed at the end of Kyoung-an stream. Additionally a lot of sewage treatment plants are newly installed and extended in this watershed. According to these efforts, water quality of Kyoung-an stream is predicted that would be improved. But the more detail and scientific analysis should be carried out for the water quality improvement, because, existing water quality improvement projects are not involved to analyze root of water quality deterioration and improvement plans. Therefore, this study aims to select suitable areas for constructed-wetlands and to calculate size of the constructed-wetlands for water quality improvement in Kyoung-an stream through the geographical pollutant distribution analysis and land-use pattern analysis by high resolution satellite image and suitable area analysis of constructed-wetlands by GIS(Geographic information system). The progress of this study is (1) to select maximum pollutant loaded area by geographical analysis based on water quality data, (2) to analyze land-use patterns using high resolution satellite image, (3) to select suitable areas of constructed-wetlands, (4) to calculate area and volume of chosen constructed-wetlands using GIS. Basically, sizes of constructed-wetlands are induced through the constructed-wetlands design index based on treatment ratio(provided by Korea Water Resources Corporation). As a result of this study, two areas are selected to construct constructed-wetlands. One of the area was $127,586m^2$ near by Yong-in sewage treatment plant, and the other area was $1,647m^2$ near by Ju-buk stream and Dae-dae stream.

  • Non-household unit water use for each type of business are estimated in this study. The business types are subdivided into forty based on nine categories by the national industrial standard classification, such as office, commerce, public bathing, public water use etc. Correlation analysis and analysis of variance (ANOVA) are applied to obtain statistical characteristics between industrial water use data, surveyed in six cities including Nonsan, Seosan and the National Statistical Bureau and site area, employees number etc. for each detailed business area. As the proposed non-household unit water uses are compared with five surveyed data in USA, it is shown that almost of water uses per unit area are less than those in USA. Non-household unit water uses of 25% cumulative probability water use recommended as efficiency benchmarks among surveyed data in Korea are also less than those in USA. Especially, in the case of water use in school, the average and the range are similar results showing water use range between 0.4 and 6.2 ($l/m^2/day$) as liter per capita day per an unit area, also water use range between 11.9 to 64.0 (l/student/day) as liter per capita day per a person. From the result of correlation analysis with internal and exogenous affecting factors on non-household water use, it can be concluded that a unit area is most appropriate factor as a standard of non-household unit water use. In case of water use in educational business, the number of students including staffs is more correlated than site ares with water use for the settled water consumption tendency. Although the increase and decrease of educational institutes, retail/wholesale store and restaurants are shown remarkable by the temperature as a representative factor, low correlations are shown in water use fluctuation in lodging house and hospital.

  • In this study, we used the CLUE-s model to predict the future land-use change based on the urban growth scenario in South Korea. The land-use maps of six classes (water, urban, rice paddy, upland crop, forest, and grass) for the year 2008 were obtained from the Ministry of Environment (MOE), and the land-use data for 5-year intervals between 1980 and 2010 were obtained from the Water Resources Management Information System (WAMIS), South Korea. For predicting the future land-use change, the MOE environmental conservation value assessment map (ECVAM) was considered for identifying the development-restricted areas, and various driving factors as location characteristics were prepared for the model. The predicted results were verified by comparing them with the land-use statistics of urban areas in each province for the year 2008. The prediction error rates were 9.47% in Gyeonggi, 9.96% in Gangwon, 10.63% in Chungbuk, 7.53% in Chungnam, 9.48% in Jeonbuk, 6.92% in Jeonnam, 2.50% in Gyeongbuk, and 8.09% in Gyeongnam. The sources of error might come from the gaps between the development of political decisions in reality with spatio-temporal variation and the mathematical model for urban growth rate in CLUE-s model for future scenarios. Based on the land-use scenario in 2008, the land-use predictions for the year 2100 showed that the urban area increased by 28.24%, and the rice paddy, upland crop, and forest areas decreased by 8.27, 6.72, and 1.66%, respectively, in South Korea.

  • Interest in all kinds of renewable energies has been highly increased while the micro-small-hydro power(MSHP) development has shown relatively slowly growth because of the negative public recognition about dam site development. It is, however, announced that the micro-SHP shows higher energy conversion efficiency compared to other renewable energies and does not emit any carbon dioxide. Thus, it is concerned about the development and application of micro-SHP as an alternative energy. In this study, the application for Android was exploited with Eclipse to visualize readily the potential realizable amount of hydropower by micro-SHP. With this application, we can select the region from the map, obtain the design discharge of the selected site was calculated with HEC-HMS, presented by U.S. Army of Corp. and perform the simply economic analysis in sequence. Yeongwol in Gangwon-do Province, Korea was chosen as the target area since historically abundant precipitation was found and it is possible to obtain fundamental data from WAMIS. Results from this study could be expanded the whole region of Korea. Also, the initial investment cost would be reduced if the location for micro-SHP would be determined properly, because this application can help us easily select and examine the potential micro-SHP sites without on-the-spot visit.

  • When choosing the support pattern of tunnel, the characteristics of rock are identified from the result of the surface geologic survey, boring, and geophysical prospecting and laboratory test. And a rock mass rating is classified and excavation method and standard support pattern are designed considering rock classification, domestic and international construction practices, numerical analysis. According to the revised design standard for tunnel, it was recommended to classify the rock mass rating for the design of tunnel into a rating based on RMR. If necessary, it proposed a flexible standard allowed applying more atomized the rock mass rating and Q-System. Also, the resonable verification of the support pattern must be accompanied because the factors affecting the structure and behavior of ground during the construction of tunnel are the main factors of uncertainty factors such as the nature of ground, ground water and the characteristics of structural materials. These days, such verification method is getting more specialized and diversified. In this study, the empirical method, numerical analysis and comparative analysis of in situ measurements were used to prove the reasonableness in the support pattern by RMR and Q-value on the Imha Dam emergency spillway.

  • Recently, irregular torrential rainfall have frequently occurred due to abnormal climate, and landslide damage is increasing. In Korea, more than 70% of the total land is mountainous areas, appropriate measures are needed to prevent landslides by heavy rainfall. When improved soil is applied to the surface of the slope, it is possible to suppress an increase in groundwater level due to rainfall penetration and secure stability of the slope. In this study, the appropriate depth of improved soil that can confirm the increase in groundwater level and secure stability by applying improved soil to the weathered soil slope was studied. A total of three cases were analyzed for the slope of the cross-section: standard slope for weathered soil (1:1.5, 1:1.8, and 1:2.0). For rainfall conditions, referring to the regional frequency probability rainfall provided by the Water resource Management Information System, the increase in groundwater level by stage was confirmed by assuming a 500-year frequency precipitation maximum duration of 48 hours. As a result of the study, in the case of natural slopes, the slope was completely saturated before 48 hours the rainfall duration, and there was a possibility of collapse. the improvement depth in the slope of 1:1.5 was appropriate for more than 1m from the surface regardless of the rainfall duration, and in the the slope of 1:1.8 was appropriate of 1m for more than 36 hours. in the slope of 1:2.0, it was appropriate for that safety when improved soil of 0.5m for rainfall duration 48 hours or more.

  • In this study, runoff characteristics analysis was conducted as a basic research to establish a forecasting and warning system for flood risk areas in small mountainous basins in South Korea. The Danyang 1 Bridge basin located in Danyang-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do was selected as the study basin, and the watershed characteristic factors were calculated using Q-GIS based on the digital elevation model (DEM) of the basin. In addition, nine heavy rainfall events were selected from 2020 to 2023 using hydrometeorological data provided by the National Water Resources Management Comprehensive Information System. HEC-HMS rainfall-runoff model was used to analyze the runoff characteristics of small mountainous basins, and rainfall-runoff model simulation was performed by reflecting 9 heavy rainfall events and calculated basin characteristic factors. Based on the rainfall-runoff model, parameter optimization was performed for six heavy rain events with large error rates among the simulated events, and the appropriate parameter range for the Danyang 1 Bridge basin, a small mountainous basin, was calculated to be 0.8 to 3.4. The results of this study will be utilized as foundational data for establishing flood forecasting and warning systems in small mountainous basin, and further research will be conducted to derive the range of parameters according to basin characteristics.

  • Because active interactions occur among vegetation, hydrology, and geomorphology in riparian systems, any changes in one of these factors can significantly affect the other two. In this study, we evaluated these interactions at four sites (two in Gajeong and two in Hahan) along the Seomjin-gang River that was substantially devastated by an extreme flood in 2020. We examined the relationship between the riparian vegetation and the hydraulic characteristics of the flood using remote sensing, hydraulic modeling, and field surveys combined. The evaluation results showed that the floods caused a record-breaking rise of up to 43.1 m above sea level at the Yeseong-bridge stage gauge station (zero elevation 27.4 m) located between the Gajeong and Hahan sites, with the shear stress being four times higher in Hahan than in Gajeong. Additionally, the water level during the flood was estimated to be a maximum of 1 m higher depending on the location in the presence of riparian plants. Furthermore, both sites underwent extensive biological damage due to the flood, with 78-80% loss in vegetation, with preferential damage observed in large willow species, compared to Quercus acutissima. The above findings imply that all plant species exhibit different vulnerabilities towards extreme floods and do not induce similar behavior towards events causing a disturbance. In conclusion, we developed strategies for effectively managing riparian trees by minimizing flood hazards that could inevitably cause damage.

  • For the past 20 years, the growth and development of university-design-educational institutes contributed to the industrial development of our country. Due to the technological fluctuation and changes in the industrial structure in the latter half of the 20th century, the enterprise is demanding professionally-oriented design manpower. The principle which appears from instances of the advanced nations is to accommodate the demands in social changes and apply them to educational design programs. In order to respond promptly to the industrial demand especially, the advanced nations adopted "multidisciplinary design education programs" to lead innovation in the area of design globally. The objective of the research consequently is to suggest an educational system and a program through which the designer can be educated to obtain complex knowledge and the technique demanded by the industry and enterprise. Nowadays in order to adapt to a new business environment, designers specially should have both the knowledge and techniques in engineering and business administration. We suggest that the IPDI, a multidisciplinary design educational system and program is made up of the coordinated operation of major classes, on-the-job training connection, educational system for research base creation, renovation design development program for the application and the synthesis of alternative proposals about the training facility joint ownership by connecting with the education of design, business administration and engineering.

  • This study introduces newly implemented geological well logs database for Jeju public water wells, built for a research project focusing on integrated hydrogeology database of Jeju Island. A detailed analysis of the existing 1,200 Jeju Island geological logs for the public wells developed since 1970 revealed six major indications to be improved for their use in Jeju geological logs DB construction: (1) lack of uniformity in rock name classification, (2) poor definitions of pyroclastic deposits and sand and gravel layers, (3) lack of well borehole aquifer information, (4) lack of information on well screen installation in many water wells, (5) differences by person in geological logging descriptions. A new Jeju geological logs DB enabling standardized input and output formats has been implemented to overcome the above indications by reestablishing the names of Jeju volcanic and sedimentary rocks and utilizing a commercial, database-based input structured, geological log program. The newly designed database structure in geological log program enables users to store a large number of geology, well drilling, and test data at the standardized DB input structure. Also, well borehole groundwater and aquifer test data can be easily added without modifying the existing database structure. Thus, the newly implemented geological logs DB could be a standardized DB for a large number of Jeju existing public wells and new wells to be developed in the future at Jeju Island. Also, the new geological logs DB will be a basis for ongoing project 'Developing GIS-based integrated interpretation system for Jeju Island hydrogeology'.
