Massage application at calf muscles for ankle flexibility (발목의 유연성 증진을 위한 종아리 근육 마사지 적용)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 종아리 근육에 마사지를 적용하여 발목의 유연성과 균형에 미치는 영향을 알아보고자 실시하였다. 연구대상자는 건강한 대학생 32명으로 마사지 적용방법에 따라 세 그룹으로 나누어 한쪽 종아리에 각 5분간, 총 10분 동안 마사지를 적용하였다. 마사지 적용 전, 후로 발목의 유연성을 측정하기 위하여 Star excursion balance test를 실시하였다. 종아리 근육 마사지 중재 후에 두 그룹 모두 기능적 뻗기 검사와 변형된 한발 서기 검사에서 마사지전보다 유의하게 증가한 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 마사지 종류에 따른 차이는 나타나지 않았다. 마사지 종류에 관계없이 종아리 근육 마사지는 발목관절의 유연성과 균형능력에 효과가 나타났다. 따라서 종아리 마사지의 적용은 균형능력을 향상시키는 방법으로 보인다.

  • 가을은 단풍 산행을 위해 산을 찾는 사람들이 많아지는 계절이다. 등산은 심폐와 온몸의 근육과 인대를 강화시키는데 효과적인 운동이지만, 등산 전 몸 상태에 대한 점검 없이 무리한 등산을 할 경우 평소 약해진 다리 혈관이 늘어난 혈액량을 감당하지 못해서 건강을 해칠 수가 있다. 더욱이 등산을 즐기는 중장년층이라면 종아리 근육의 탄력이 약화되어 정맥혈관이 확장되는 정맥류가 발생할 가능성이 높고, 이미 정맥류가 있는 경우라면 악화될 수 있다.

A comparative study of lower extremity muscle activity in adults in their 20s with flat foot that applied low-dye taping and foot intrinsic muscle strengthening exercise (Low-dye 테이핑과 발 내재근육 강화 운동을 적용한 편평발을 가진 20대 성인의 하지 근육활성도 비교 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate effect of low-dye taping and foot intrinsic muscle strengthening exercise on the muscle activity of the tibialis anterior, calf muscles, and long calf muscles during one-foot standing in subjects with flat feet. The subjects were 16 adults in their 20s with flat feet, and they were divided into low-dye taping (LTG; n=8) and foot intrinsic muscle strengthening exercise (FSG; n=8) groups. Each group underwent the appropriate intervention twice a week for 6 weeks. The muscle activity of the tibialis anterior, long calf muscle, and medial calf muscle was measured. Repeated two-way ANOVA was performed to compare changes in muscle activity before and after the intervention. As a result of muscle activity measurement, LTG significantly decreased between before and after the experiment in all muscles (p<.05). In FSG, only the tibialis anterior significantly decreased between before and after the experiment (p<.05). Therefore, low-dye taping and foot intrinsic muscle strengthening exercises will be helpful for efficient the lower extremity muscle activity of flat foot.

Effects of Calf Sleeve on the Muscle Function of Ankle Joint (종아리 기능성 의류가 발목 관절 근기능에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of wearing functional clothing over calf muscles on the muscle function of the calf and to verify whether functional clothing can increase calf muscle function. The participants of the study were 21 male students from University B who had no lower extremity abnormality. The measurement method was measured at 30°/sec and 120°/sec angle speed before and after wearing functional clothing on the right and left calves using Humac Norm of CSMI, a constant speed muscle function measuring instrument. No significant difference was observed during dorsiflexion when wearing functional clothing, but in plantar flexion, muscle strength and muscle endurance were significantly increased. Therefore, wearing functional clothing over the calves showed a positive effect on improving exercise function, and future research suggests a study comparing the degree of muscle function improvement between those wearing functional clothing and those not wearing it for athletes training ahead of the competition.

  • Peroneal neuropathy presenting at birth is a rare disorder. Although neonatal mononeuropathies may be related to obstetrical complications, prenatal mechanisms should be also considered. We describe an infant who was born at term by cesarean section due to breech presentation with a unilateral footdrop. Lack of compound muscle action potential in the peroneal nerve and denervation potentials confined to the tibialis anterior and the extensor hallucis longus muscles in the electrophysiological studies on the fourth day of life strongly suggest an isolated peroneal neuropathy of intrauterine onset. Early and sequential electrodiagnostic studies will be important to provide better temporal and pathophysiologic definitions, the better timing of onset and prognosis for mononeuropathies presenting in newborn infants.

  • Most analytical models of the human body have focused on conscious responses. A patellar tendon reflex, a representative example of spinal reflexes, occurs without a neural command. Muscle forces and activation of the quadriceps femoris muscles in healthy adults during patellar tendon reflex are identified in this study. The model is assumed to move in the sagittal plane, and the thigh and the trunk are assumed to be fixed in a sitting position so that the shank can move similar to a pendulum. The knee joint is modeled as a revolute joint, and the ankle joint is modeled as a fixed joint so that the shank and the foot can be regarded as one rigid body. Muscle forces are calculated following the inverse dynamic approach. Kinematic data obtained from an experiment (Mamizuka, 2007) are used as input data. Muscle activations are identified using a Hill-type muscle model. The obtained simulation results are compared with experimental results for validating the model and the underlying assumptions.

The Effect of Calfraise Treatment on the Quickness of the Legs (카프레이즈(Calf raise) 처치가 하지 순발력에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of one-off capraise movement on the quickness of the lower extremities among the basic physical strength factors. The subjects of this study were 16 students majoring in physical education at Y University in D Metropolitan City, and all subjects were familiar with the contents of the measurement items and crime prevention, and the experiment was conducted with the students who answered the questionnaire and agreed. In summary, it seems that only a single calfraise is effective in strengthening the quickness of the lower extremities, and in particular, it is judged that the thicker the circumference of the calf muscle, the more it affects the quickness of the lower extremities. In addition, although the results of this study may not be considered to be effective for all ages, it is considered that it is good to use it as basic data for physical fitness evaluation as it shows the effect of improving records only with a single exercise. In future studies, it would be nice to recruit subjects by age and conduct studies that can raise the need for exercise through age differences.

A Study on the Development of a Calf Supporter for Improving Balance Capacity (균형능력 향상을 위한 종아리 서포터 개발에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate how wearing calf support and applying of electronic muscle simulation(EMS) affected the ability to balance. In this study, the one leg standing test for static balance and the Y balance test for dynamic balance were used to assess balance. At this time, the pressure of the calf support was different to produce two supporters, and a difference between wearing the support before, after, and after applying EMS was evaluated. Seven men in their 20s with healthy bodies were measured five times each with a five-minute break, taking into account muscle fatigue, and the difference between each variable was analyzed through a follow-up test using nonparametric statistical analysis. Studies have shown more difference from supporter B with a more appropriate pressure (mmgh) for increasing balance capability than from supporter A. In addition, it was confirmed that the use of EMS electrostimulation and support before measuring the balance capability resulted in a greater difference. The proper pressure (mmgh) supporters and EMS can increase the ability to balance, and these results can be expected to improve the balance ability of ordinary people in their daily lives.

Design and Efficacy of Calf EMS Protective Gear for Pain Relief in PARA Taekwondo Athletes (PARA 태권도 선수의 통증 완화를 위한 종아리 EMS 보호대 설계 및 효과)

  • The aim of this paper is to design and evaluate calf braces that are equipped with Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS) modules. These braces are intended to alleviate calf pain in PARA Taekwondo athletes. The paper also seeks to assess the effects of different textile electrode designs. PARA Taekwondo participants are at a heightened risk of injuries and pain due to the nature of this exercise, which is designed for individuals with disabilities. Additionally, there is a significant risk of strain on the lower limb muscles in PARA Taekwondo compared to regular Taekwondo. To address this issue, calf taping methods are commonly used. In this study, we develop calf EMS protective gear and aim to examine the effects of different textile electrode designs inspired by taping methods. We evaluate the differences in the effects of three different textile electrode designs through visual analog scale (VAS) and range of motion (ROM) measurements. The results show that EMS protective gear has the potential to reduce calf pain among PARA Taekwondo athletes, with electrode designs inspired by kinesiology taping providing the most effective pain relief. This research suggests that these findings may be applicable to other sports disciplines, body areas, and everyday pain relief scenarios.
