Terrestrial insect fauna was surveyed in the Junam wetland area, which consists of the Junam, Dongpan, and Sannam wetlands, by visual counting and pictures. A sweep net collection was conducted from May to October 2010. A neighburing artificial lotus wetland was also surveyed for comparison. A total of 5,730 insects were surveyed, representing 268 species in 85 families and 12 orders. Sixty-three species of coleopterans were surveyed, followed by 60 species of Lepidoptera, and 37 species of Hemiptera. Coleopteran individuals were 25.9% of the total insect numbers surveyed, comprising most abundant group. This was followed by Odonata, Lepidoptera, and Orthoptera at 22.3%, 15.4%, and 12.7%, respectively. In total, 197 species were surveyed in the Dongpan wetland, 175 in the Junam wetland, and 154 species in the Sannam wetlands. However, only 86 species were surveyed in the artificial lotus wetland. Galerucella nipponensis in Coleoptera, Crocothemis servilia mariannae in Odonata, and Polygonia c-aureum in Lepidoptera were the most abundant in all four wetlands. Community analyses showed that the dominance index was highest in the artificial lotus wetland at 0.25 and lowest in Junam wetland at 0.08. Diversity indices were relatively high in all wetlands at 4.48, 4.44, 4.28, and 3.87 in Junam, Dongpan, Sannam, and the artificial lotus wetland, respectively. The insect fauna similarity index was highest in the Junam and Dongpan wetlands at 0.96. The lotus wetland showed the lowest similarity of the three wetlands with values of 0.45-0.53.
This study was performed to know and compare the community structures of macrobenthic invertebrates of eight fishing grounds in the coastal waters of Jeju Island from September to October 2008. A total of 166 species was identified. Mollusks comprised 77 species (46.4%); Arthropods 24 (14.5%), Cnidarians 18 (10.8%); Poriferans 16 (9.6%); and the others including Echinoderms 33 (17.7%). Density and biomass were estimated to be 6,905 ind./$m^2$ and 113,100.7 gwwt/$m^2$, respectively. Gastropods was the most dominant taxon in terms of abundance (3,311 ind./$m^2$) and number of species as well, and Gastropods was predominant in biomass (55,789.2 gwwt/$m^2$). The dominant species were Omphalius pfeifferi, Astralium haematragum, Turbo cornutus, Ergalatax contraacta, Lithophaga cura, Anthocidaris crassispina, Herdmania monus in 5-15 m. Based on the cluster analysis, the study area could be divided into two station groups. The biodiversity, evenness and richness index appeared as follows: H' = 1.59-2.95, E' = 0.38-0.87, R = 3.3-10.4. The dominance index were highest in Daepo and lowest in Woljeong.

The present study was carried out to investigate the temporal and spatial changes in species composition and abundance of polychaetes in Lake Shihwa. Macrobenthic fauna were collected from eight sampling surveys performed in March, June, September and December of 1994, March and October of 1995, February and August of 1996, using a modified van Veen grab with 0.1 $m^2$ coverage area. Polychaete worms, the most abundant macrofaunal group, comprised of 1~22 species at each investigation; number of species continuously decreased during the survey period. The mean density of polychaete was $794{\pm}1,275\;indiv.{\cdot}m^{-2}$ and showed a large fluctuation over time. The variation in abundance was mainly coupled with the domination of Polydora ligni occupying 83% in total density. The next dominant species were Pseudopolydora kempi (mean density of 31 $indiv.{\cdot}m^{-2}$) and Capitella capitata (mean density of 23 $indiv.{\cdot}m^{-2}$). Abundant polychaetes in Lake Shihwa are known to be tolerant to sediment pollution. Ecological indices such as diversity (H') and dominance (D) also indicated that the number of species significantly decreased and a few species predominated in Lake Shihwa after the dike construction. The azoic zone were extended from the upper reach of Lake Shihwa to the vicinity of the dike over time. The reduced number of species, predominance of pollution indicator species and development of an azoic zone reflect severe deterioration of benthic environments in Lake Shihwa.
We evaluated the landscape ecological value of selected minefields and wetland patches as a habitat of the forest bird community. The avian fauna of three minefields of 8.5ha, 17.4ha, and 40.6ha were evaluated by comparing that of three control sites of mountain area. Average number of forest bird species, number of individuals, species diversity index, species richness, and species evenness were analyzed according to the size of patch and environmental characteristics such as the presence of wetland and connectivity. Community similarity was evaluated between test and control plots. Avian fauna can be summarized as follows. First, 63 species were recorded, and the sum of maximum counts was 828 individuals. Species diversity index was 3.8, and the species richness was 9.2. Species evenness was 93.3. Second, small, isolated forest patch had a low average number of species and individuals as expected. But, small forest patches with streams had higher bird density than patches without water surface. Third, forest patches with marsh wetland were evaluated as lower habitat quality than forest patches with stream wetland in terms of the number of bird species per unit area, number of individuals per unit area, species diversity index, species richness index, and species evenness. Finally, Community similarity of the small forest patches with streams was similar with large connected forest. As a result, lowland forest patch was shown the good quality for the forest bird community in spite of small extents, and community structure was similar with mountain forest bird community. Thus, riparian forest restoration could improve the biodiversity of the forest bird community.
This study was conducted to investigate the flora and vegetation structure at a 15-year-old artificial wetland for the water purification in Jincheon, Korea. The percentage of species number of obligate wetland plants and facultative wetland plants totaled 40%, whereas that of obligate upland plants and facultative upland plants was 57%. This result showed that the artificial wetland in the study experienced terrestrialization. The number of annual and biennial plants that are pioneer vegetation in a successional stage was lower than that of perennial herbs as a result of the long-term stabilization of vegetation. From the results of DCA (detrended correspondence analysis), water depth played an important role on the classification of vegetation structure in an old artificial wetland. Species diversity was higher in the terrestrialized plant communities such as Iris pseudacorus and Aster koraiensis than in any other wetland communities. Plant communities could be classified according to the wetland indices; obligate upland for A. koraiensis community, facultative wetlands for Carex dispalata var. dispalata and I. pseudacorus community, and obligate wetlands for Nymphoides peltata, Nymphaea tetragona, Phragmites communis, Potamogeton maackianus, and Typha angustifolia community. In conclusion, this result suggests that wetland vegetation should be maintained against terrestrialization through the proper management of sedimentation and hydrological regime in an artificial wetland.
Three floating islands have been constructed for water quality improvement for a polluted irrigation reservoir. Each floating island consists of 10 segments. Each segment hay an area of $16m^2$(4×4m) and is made of wood frames and floats(polystyrene foam). We planted three species of aquatic macrophytes(Typha angustifolia, Zizania latifolia, and Phragmites australis) in floating island on June, 1998. They grew very well without death. We would like to evaluate Phragmites australis is the most suitable aquatic macrophyte that could be planted in a floating island because it maintained the best balance of its root and shoot among them. During their grown period, net primary productivity of Typha angustifolia was $962gDM/m^2$, Zizania latifolia was $1,115gDM/m^2$, and Phragmites australis was $523gDM/m^2$. From these data, it would be estimated to 5.0Kg uptake of nitrogen by aquatic macrophytes and phosphorus 0.8Kg in 3 floating islands. The floating islands worked well as a habitat of fish and prawns. Many kinds of insect lived on the floating islands. The floating island has not only the function of water quality treatment but also several advantages: improvement of landscape and species diversity; low cost of maintenance; low technology; unnecessary of energy; less susceptible to variations in pollutant loading. It could be evaluated a good measure of water quality improvement for an irrigation reservoir. However, it should be intensively studied to develop more light, strong, durable and low-priced frames for efficient floating islands.

In order to evaluate the vertical distribution and distributional pattern of vascular plants in the Samga district of Sobaeksan National Park, vascular plants were surveyed along a hiking trail from the Samga Tour Support Center to the top of a mountain. The elevation range was divided into 11 sections with 100 m intervals from 400 m to 1439 m above sea level.A total of 375 taxa were listed, comprising 92 families, 235 genera, 332 species, 3 subspecies, 37 varieties, and 3 forms. The pattern of species richness along the elevational gradient showed a reverse hump-shaped trend. The species distribution pattern was positively correlated with the soil exchangeable cations Ca2+ and Mg2+, soil pH, available phosphate, and the warmth index. Furthermore, slope, soil moisture content, and soil exchangeable cations were significantly correlated with species distribution. DCA grouped herb species into two groups. Stands of each section were sequentially arranged from 400 m to 1500 m along an altitudinal gradient. Soil moisture content, soil pH, soil K2+ and Na2+, available phosphate, and slope were significantly correlated with stand distribution. This study provides important data that could be useful for conservation and the sustainable use of biodiversity in the study area. In order to understand the ecological and environmental characteristics and distribution of plant species, it will be necessary to continuously develop relative studies with continuous monitoring.
