Seismic Performance of Concrete Masonry Unit (CMU) Infills in Reinforced Concrete Moment Framing System (철근콘크리트 모멘트 골조시스템에서 조적 끼움벽의 내진성능)

  • The masonry infill walls are one of the most popular components that are used for dividing and arranging spaces in building construction. In spite of the fact that the masonry infills have many advantages, the system needs to be used with caution when the earthquake load is to be considered. The infills tend to develop diagonal compression struts during earthquake and increase the demand in surrounding RC frames. If there are openings in the infill walls, the loading path gets even complicated and the engineering judgements are required for designing the system. In this study, a masonry infill system was investigated through finite element analysis (FEA) and the results were compared with the current design standard, ASCE 41. It is noted that the equivalent width of the compression strut estimated by ASCE 41 could be 32% less than that using detailed FEA. The global load resisting capacity was also estimated by 28% less when ASCE 41 was used compare to the FEA case. Rather than using expensive FEA, the adapting ASCE 41 for the analysis and design of the masonry infills with openings would provide a good estimation by about 25% conservatively.

A Collision Simulation Study on the Structural Stability for a Programmable Drone (충돌 시뮬레이션을 통한 코딩 교육용 드론의 구조적 안정성 연구)

  • A programmable drone is a drone developed not only to experience the basic principles of flight but also to control drones through Arduino-based programming. Due to the nature of the training drones, the main users are students who are inexperienced in controlling the drones, which often cause frequent collisions with external objects, resulting in high damage to the drones' frame. In this study, the structural stability of the drone was evaluated by means of a structural dynamics based collision simulation for educational drone frame. Collision simulations were performed on three cases according to the impact angle of $0^{\circ}$, $+15^{\circ}$ and $-15^{\circ}$, using an analytical model with approximately 240,000 tetrahedron elements. Using ANSYS LS-DYNA, which provides excellent functions for the simulation of the dynamic behavior of three-dimensional structures, the stress distribution and strain generated on the drone upper, the drone lower, and the ring assembly were analyzed when the drones collided against the wall at a rate of 4 m/s. Safety factors resulting from the equivalent stress and the yield strain were calculated in the range of 0.72 to 2.64 and 1.72 to 26.67, respectively. To ensure structural stability for areas where stress exceeds yield strain and ultimate strain according to material properties, the design reinforcement is presented.

Connection Performance of Steel Moment Frame with Out-of-Plane Beam Skew (면외방향 어긋난 보를 갖는 철골모멘트골조의 접합부 성능)

  • This study investigated the behavior of out-of-plane skewed moment connections that were designed as IMFs, as per the Korean standards. A total of 14 finite element models were constructed with the consideration of two types (single- and double-sided connections) and four levels of skew angle (0°, 10°, 20°, and 30°). The results indicated that the skewed connections considered in this study met the acceptance criteria for IMFs given by the codes. However, the load-carrying capacities of skewed connections were decreased as the skew angle increased. For the connection with a skew angle of 30°, the peak load was noted to be 13% less and the energy dissipation capacity could be 26% less than that of non-skewed connection. In addition, because of the skewed nature, the stress distribution in the skewed beam flange near the connection was asymmetric and the stresses were concentrated on the beam inner flange. Column twisting induced by the skewed configuration was very small and negligible in the beam and column combination considered in this study.

Numerical Simulation of Dynamic Response of Seabed and Structure due to the Interaction among Seabed, Composite Breakwater and Irregular Waves (II) (불규칙파-해저지반-혼성방파제의 상호작용에 의한 지반과 구조물의 동적응답에 관한 수치시뮬레이션 (II))

  • Seabed beneath and near coastal structures may undergo large excess pore water pressure composed of oscillatory and residual components in the case of long durations of high wave loading. This excess pore water pressure may reduce effective stress and, consequently, the seabed may liquefy. If liquefaction occurs in the seabed, the structure may sink, overturn, and eventually increase the failure potential. In this study, to evaluate the liquefaction potential on the seabed, numerical analysis was conducted using the expanded 2-dimensional numerical wave tank to account for an irregular wave field. In the condition of an irregular wave field, the dynamic wave pressure and water flow velocity acting on the seabed and the surface boundary of the composite breakwater structure were estimated. Simulation results were used as input data in a finite element computer program for elastoplastic seabed response. Simulations evaluated the time and spatial variations in excess pore water pressure, effective stress, and liquefaction potential in the seabed. Additionally, the deformation of the seabed and the displacement of the structure as a function of time were quantitatively evaluated. From the results of the analysis, the liquefaction potential at the seabed in front and rear of the composite breakwater was identified. Since the liquefied seabed particles have no resistance to force, scour potential could increase on the seabed. In addition, the strength decrease of the seabed due to the liquefaction can increase the structural motion and significantly influence the stability of the composite breakwater. Due to limitations of allowable paper length, the studied results were divided into two portions; (I) focusing on the dynamic response of structure, acceleration, deformation of seabed, and (II) focusing on the time variation in excess pore water pressure, liquefaction, effective stress path in the seabed. This paper corresponds to (II).

This excess pore water pressure may reduce effective stress and, consequently, the seabed may liquefy. If the liquefaction occurs in the seabed, the structure may sink, overturn, and eventually fail. Especially, the seabed liquefaction behavior beneath a gravity-based structure under wave loading should be evaluated and considered for design purpose. In this study, to evaluate the liquefaction potential on the seabed, numerical analysis was conducted using 2-dimensional numerical wave tank. The 2-dimensional numerical wave tank was expanded to account for irregular wave fields, and to calculate the dynamic wave pressure and water particle velocity acting on the seabed and the surface boundary of the structure. The simulation results of the wave pressure and the shear stress induced by water particle velocity were used as inputs to a FLIP(Finite element analysis LIquefaction Program). Then, the FLIP evaluated the time and spatial variations in excess pore water pressure, effective stress and liquefaction potential in the seabed. Additionally, the deformation of the seabed and the displacement of the structure as a function of time were quantitatively evaluated. From the analysis, when the shear stress was considered, the liquefaction at the seabed in front of the structure was identified. Since the liquefied seabed particles have no resistance force, scour can possibly occur on the seabed. Therefore, the strength decrease of the seabed at the front of the structure due to high wave loading for the longer period of time such as a storm can increase the structural motion and consequently influence the stability of the structure.
