25년 동안 각고의 노력 끝에, 지난 1976년 4월, 세계 최초로 유행성출혈열의 병원체를 발견, '한탄바이러스'라고 이름 짓고 그 예방 백신을 만들어 우리 국민뿐만 아니라 인류를 고질적인 풍토병에서 자유롭게 한 이호왕 박사(83, 아호 : 한탄)를 서울 종로구 대학로에 있는 한탄생명과학재단에서 만났다. 이 박사는 대한민국학술원 회장, 대한백신학회 초대회장 등을 역임하였고, UN산하기구인 국제백신연구소(IVI)의 한국후원회장을 맡아서 인도적 연구 사업 발전에 힘을 기울이기도 했다. 또한 '한탄상'을 제정, 매년 미생물학을 연구하는 후학에게 수여하여 그들을 격려하고 있다.

한국항공우주연구원 채연석(54) 원장은 어릴 때부터 로켓 만들기에 푹 빠져 있었다. 고교 시절 자작 소형 로켓이 귓가에서 터지는 바람에 고막을 다치기도 했다. 그 시절은 닐 암스트롱이 달에 인류의 족적을 처음으로 남기고, 미국과 옛 소련의 우주개발 경쟁으로 우주선 발사 장면이 연일 방송과 신문지상을 장식하던 때였다. 그것을 보는 소년 채연석의 꿈은 직접 만든 로켓을 우주로 쏘아 올리는 것이었다. 그로부터 30여 년이 지난 지금 채 원장은 한국의 우주기술 개발의 총 사령탑이 되어 있다. 그 자리에서 그는 우주를 향한 꿈을 바느질의 한땀 한땀처럼 엮어가고 있는 중이다. 한국항공우주연구원 원장실에서 만난 채연석 원장의 표정에서는 우주항공 기술의 기반을 쌓느라 영일없는 나날을 보내는 것을 금방 느낄 수 있었다. 채 원장은 2002년말 우주 개발용 로켓의 주류를 이루고 있는 액체연료를 사용하는 로켓을 개발해 발사에 성공하기도 했다. 그 로켓의 길이는 14m, 지름 1m로 우리 나라 독자 기술로 개발한 것이다. 그는 우리 나라가 독자적으로 인공위성을 만들어, 역시 독자적으로 개발한 로켓으로 발사에 성공하면 월드컵 4강 진출보다 더 국가 이미지가 높아질 것으로 내다봤다. 그만큼 우주기술은 극한 기술과 첨단기술을 골고루 필요로 하기 때문이다.

대한기계설비단체총연합회가 창립 30주년을 맞아 정부로부터 매년 7월 16일을 '기계설비의 날'로 지정받음은 물론 지난 7월 15일 '제1회 기계설비의 날' 기념식을 성대히 치르면서 축제의 한마당을 펼쳤다. 대한기계설비단체총연합회는 기계설비분야의 당면과제 해결 및 업계의 건전한 발전과 단결을 도모하고 기술개발을 촉진하기 위해 지난 1986년 설립되었다. 한일엠이씨 최상홍 회장은 총연합회 설립을 주도하였고 초대 회장까지 맡아서 기계설비업계의 단합과 발전을 이끌었다. 기계설비업계에서 그는 "온 몸으로 실천하는 작은 거인", "기술향상에 뜻을 둔 선각자이며 기술보국에 앞장선 거보(巨寶)", "위트 있는 분위기 메이커", "원리원칙과 의로움을 중요시 하는 멋쟁이", "철두철미한 메모광", "기계설비업계의 대부" 등으로 불리운다. 우리나라에 '기계설비'라는 단어 자체가 생소했던 1950년대, 척박한 환경의 기계설비에 입문하여 오늘날 최첨단 기계설비산업으로 거듭나기까지 최상홍 회장은 기계설비 발전을 이끌었을 뿐만 아니라 많은 후배들을 배출해냈다. 또한 대한기계설비건설협회를 비롯하여 대한설비공학회, 냉동공조산업협회, 한국설비기술협회, 대한기계설비단체총연합회 등 업계 및 학계에 그의 손길이 미치지 않은 곳이 없을 정도로 족적은 거대하다. 본지는 '최상홍 설비인생 50년 간행위원회'가 지난 2006년 발간한 "'적당'으로는 자부심을 얻을 수 없다" 책을 통해 의리와 사랑으로 살아온 최상홍 회장의 기계설비 인생 60년을 더듬어 본다.

"White Day", a horror adventure game that has gone down in the history of the Korean gaming industry, is not a cruel horror game with hideous monsters and spooky mood, but a Korean-style horror game with auditory effects of ghastly sound. This paper aims at identifying the positive story-telling structure through the components of the game. This study found that the game is based on a well-organized scenario by the background, events and characters. In addition, its design and story-telling structure turned out to reinforce the positive effects of the game, by not imitating the western-style splatter games. As it provides players with playful components that bear mimicry and ilinx to maximize interactive fun, White Day is a prime example of positive games that are strongly needed in this era.

The purpose of this study is to compare the webcasting and television from the perspective of genres. It adopted the niche theory in analyzing them, avoiding simply comparing the collective average of the two media's gratification. As a result, television turned out to expand broader at niche breadth than the Webcasting and thus presented more diverse functions thar the Webcasting. The niche overlap was investigated with the average of overlapping values. The competition between the two media was rather eased in dimensions of education, culture, and entertainment. And in terms of competitive superiority, the music service sector was the only function that the Webcasting had superiority to television. Upon the results, the Webcasting was absolutely inferior to television in a whole sense. But one thing which requires consideration is that the Webcasting will have functional mergers among genres and thus develop different functions from the corresponding ones of television.

Park Tae-Joon, a pioneer in the Korean steel industry, has greatly influenced the advancement of science and technology as well as the development of the nation's economy. He believed that POSCO, which was a government-owned company, should not only focus on making profits, but also operate for higher state-level purposes. This belief became the basis for founding a general laboratory and a research university, as well as building big science and technology R&D facilities. Park Tae-Joon's efforts to establish a research university and his dedication to the advancement of science education stemmed from his devotion to public welfare. Just like he believed that the steel industry, which is the basis for all other industries, should be promoted at the state-level, he believed that university and basic science should also be promoted at the state-level. Thanks to his philosophy, the Pohang University of Science and Technology has risen beyond just a polytechnic school to become a research university that makes revolutionary science and technology advancements for the nation. The fact that Park Tae-Joon used profits from business to build the university and national research facilities such as the Pohang Light Source also shows that he nurtured pure science with the welfare of the whole nation in mind.

This paper analyzes Gloria Anzaldua's borderland proposal through her work Borderlands/La Frontera (1987). One of the strong trends of US geographical imagination started from the concept of 'city upon a hill'. It left an important footprint in the American history. In the area of international political history, it was the starting point of the isolationism policy. But, this imagination is contradictory because it has exercised the bordering power that demarcates the border and overpasses it as needed. Anzaldua's geographic proposal consists of transformation of the border into the borderlands. This is a challenge to the bordering power and a challenge to the geographical imagination that has led to isolationism, and ultimately a history war. This is not only a nationalist war aimed at the Chicano's restoration but also a war that can measure the American society's possibility of change in the future.
