Purpose : Ginkgo biloba extract(GBE) is known to increase the peripheral blood circulation. This study was designed to evaluate the effect of GBE on the acute normal tissue radiation reaction. Materials and Methods : mice were divided into two groups, radiation alone and two doses GBE plus radiation, for both acute skin reaction and jejunal crypt assay. GBE was given i.p. one hour before irradiation with priming dose given one day earlier. Thirty to Fifty Gy for acute skin reaction and 11 to 14 Gy for jejunal crypt were irradiated to right hind leg and whole body, respectively. Results : Radiation doses($RD_{50}$) for Peak skin score of 2.0 were 44.2Gy (40.6-48.2Gy) for radiation alone and 44.4Gy(41.6-47.4Gy) for two doses GBE plus radiation, showing no effect of GBE on acute radiation skin damage. The numbers of regenerating jejunal crypts per circumference were also almost the same for each radiation dose level(p=0.57-0.94), and the mean lethal doses($D_o$) were 1.800y(1.57-2.09Gy) for radiation alone and 1.88Gy(1.65-2.18Gy) for two doses GBE plus radiation, indicating no effect of GBE on jejunal crypt cell survival after radiation. Conclusion : GBE doesn't increase acute normal tissue radiation reaction in this model system. As GBE was verified to enhance radiation effect on tumor, high therapeutic gain is expected when GBE is combined with radiation therapy.

A special mesenchymal tissue layer called perichondrium has a chondrogenic capacity and is a candidate tissue for engineering of cartilage. To overcome limited potential for chondrocyte proliferation and re-absorption, we studied a method of cartilage tissue engineering comprising chondrocyte-hydrogel pluronic complex (CPC) and cultured perichondrial cell sheet (cPCs) which entirely cover CPC. For effective cartilage regeneration, cell-sheet engineering technique of high-density culture was used for fabrication of cPCs. Hydrogel pluronic as a biomimetic cell carrier used for stable and maintains the chondrocytes. The human cPCs was cultured as a single layer and entirely covered CPC. The tissue engineered constructs were implanted into the dorsal subcutaneous tissue pocket on nude mice (n = 6). CPC without cPCs were used as a controls (N = 6). Engineered cartilage specimens were harvested at 12 weeks after implantation and evaluated with gross morphology and histological examination. Biological analysis was also performed for glycosaminoglycan (GAG) and type II collagen. Indeed, we performed additional in vivo studies of cartilage regeneration using canine large fullthickness chondrial defect model. The dogs were allocated to the experimental groups as treated chondrocyte sheets with perichondrial cell sheet group (n = 4), and chondrocyte sheets only group (n = 4). The histological and biochemical studies performed 12 weeks later as same manners as nude mouse but additional immunofluorescence study. Grossly, the size of cartilage specimen of cPCs covered group was larger than that of the control. On histological examination, the specimen of cPCs covered group showed typical characteristics of cartilage tissue. The contents of GAG and type II collagen were higher in cPCs covered group than that of the control. These studies demonstrated the potential of such CPC/cPCs constructs to support chondrogenesis in vivo. In conclusion, the method of cartilage tissue engineering using cPCs supposed to be an effective method with higher cartilage tissue gain. We suggest a new method of cartilage tissue engineering using cultured perichondrial cell sheet as a promising strategy for cartilage tissue reconstruction.

The purpose of this study was to examine the skin regeneration ability of Lespedeza cuneata extract (LC) as well as verify its wound healing effects on an open wound in rats. Rats were divided into six groups (NO, saline treated group; CO, 1% carboxy methyl cellulose (CMC) treated group; PC, fucidin treated group; LCL, 1% LC treated group; LCM, 3% LC treated group; LCH, 5% LC treated group), and the experimental material was applied for 5 weeks. Elastase inhibition rate of the LCM group was 2.7% lower than that of butylated hydroxy anisole (BHA), which is an antioxidant. Futher, the collagenase inhibition rate of the LCM showed 7% higher activity than that of BHA. The left wound areas in the LCL group, LCM group, and LCH group after the 21st day were noticeably reduced in wound area by 54.2%, 53.5%, and 48.7%, respectively, compared to the CO group. This suggests that Lespedeza cuneata extract has healing effects on surgical wounds by promoting regeneration of skin epithelial tissue and synthesis of collagen.
In order to obtain plantlet derived by anthers, the anthers of Lilium asiatic hybrid 'Gran Paradiso' were cultured on Murashige and Skoog's medium supplemented with various combinations of auxin and cytokinin. The most suitable pollen stage of anther culture for the callus induction was 3 days before anthesis at the early to late binucleate stage. Organogenic calli were induced on MS medium supplemented with 5.0 mg/L 2,4-D alone and the combination of 1.0 mg/L 2,4-D and 1.0 mg/L kinetin, however, the combination of NAA and BA was more effective than that of 2,4-D and kinetin on plant regeneration through organogenesis. Shoots were formed from the induced callus on the medium with 0.5 mg/L NAA and 1.0 mg/L BA after 180 days of culture. Multiple shoots with 3-4 leaves, roots, and bulblets were formed on the medium with the combination of 2.0 mg/L NAA and 2.0 mg/L BA after 250 days of culture. The chromosome from root tip of the regenerated plantlet showed the diploid (2n=2x=24). Diploid plants were transferred to the pots and all plants were flowered in two years.

Peri-implantitis, in which inflammation caused by plaque and biofilm on the implant surface spreads to the hard tissue, can be treated by decontamination of the implant surface and reconstruction of the lost hard tissue through surgical methods. We have described the management of 3 peri-implantitis cases by decontamination of the implant surface using a round titanium brush and regenerative therapy. All cases showed clinical improvements, and no further radiographic bone loss was observed during a 2-year follow-up. This treatment method can be effective for clinical improvement and bone regeneration. However, a longer follow-up period is necessary to support these outcomes.

Implants for rhinoplasty should ideally be biocompatible and possess long-term stability after implantation. Silicone implants are most widely used for rhinoplasty. However, these implants suffer from problems related to high extrusion and infection rates. To minimize these complications, we propose a novel augmentation rhinoplasty technique using tissue engineering. To demonstrate its feasibility, a nasal-implant-shaped scaffold was designed using commercialized CAD software and fabricated using a Multi-head Deposition System, which is a solid freeform fabrication system that dispenses material. In vitro cell proliferation and chondrogenic differentiation tests were carried out using nasal septal chondrocytes.
In this study, we tried to design and synthesize using natural polymers (hyaluronic acid and sodium alginate) and also to make some kinds of scaffolds as sponge type for reducing the burst effect of loaded drug from them. Photo-dimerizable group was incorporated to hyaluronic acid and degradable hydrogel was prepared by the UV radiation of the polymer. The pore size and its distribution of scaffold were controlled by changing microsphere production conditions such as solution concentration and spraying pressure. It was found that drug release behavior from synthesized scaffolds was affected by hybridization of two naturally originated polymers (cinnamoylated tetrabutylammonium hyaluronate: CHT and cinnamolylated sodium alginate: CSA) and the obtained scaffolds were degraded in fairly long time (about 2 months) under in vitro environment. Therefore, we expect that obtained scaffolds can be applicable for the tissue regeneration scaffolds in the fields of orthopaedic surgery.

The aesthetic restoration of dental implants in the anterior maxilla is a challenge for clinicians because it requires proper harmony in three following conditions; reconstruction of hard tissue, soft tissue, and aesthetic prosthesis. A newer technique, VIP-CT (Vacularized Interpositional Periosteal Connective Tissue) graft has been introduced as an alternative to these technique which allows the clinicians perform large volume soft tissue augmentation in esthetic sites with a single procedure. The advantages of the VIP-CT graft technique are that it allows the reconstruction of large soft tissue deficiency, with little constriction postoperatively. Furthermore, it facilitates improved hard tissue augmentation due to the additional blood supply and improved bone healing by mesenchymal cells. Moreover, this technique reduces patient discomfort and treatment time. This clinical report describes the procedure of bone augmentation during immediate implantation in facial dehiscence defect, especially Vascularized Interpositional Periosteal Connective Tissue(VIP-CT) graft for aesthetic anterior soft tissue.
The creation and acceptance of new technologies has been speeding up dramatically in modern times. There are also significant uncertainties about the future shape of markets, governance and social values that will have an important impact on organizations and their capacity to meet their objectives. These rapid technological and social change and uncertainties make the upsurge of interest in technology foresight, giving rise to its emergence as a global concept and policy tool. A wide range of future methods are available for technology foresight. Selection of methods will depend upon several factors, most notably available and the time financial resources, and the objectives of the exercise. Although Delphi has been widely used for many years, scenario becomes very popular in recent years. The use of scenarios can take better account of the complexity and unpredictability of the economic, social and political environments. Scenarios tell the stories describing paths to different futures, which help organizations make better decisions today. In this study, the scenario method was employed to draw the images of the future of renewable energy. Renewable energy grows dramatically in recent years. However, there is still considerable uncertainty with regard to the potential of renewable energy due to environment regulation, energy costs, and political and economic developments in the main supplier countries for oil and natural gas. Scenario can help us to identify the risks and opportunities when we develop the renewable energy, and to prepare for them. The scenario method is expected to be more utilized in the national technology foresight.
The optimum regeneration conditions for the regeneration of three way spent catalysts (TWCs), which were taken from automobiles with different driving conditions, were investigated to evaluate the suitability as alternative catalysts for removing VOCs. The spent catalysts were washed with five different acids ($HNO_3$, $H_2SO_4$, $C_2H_2O_4$, $C_6H_8O_7$, and $H_3PO_4$) to remove contaminants and examine the optimum conditions for recovering the catalytic activity. The physicochemical properties of spent and its regenerated TWCs were evaluated by using nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, XRD, and ICP. The relative atomic ratios of contaminants and platinum group metals (PGMs) of the spent TWCs were greatly dependent on the placed positions. The main contaminants formed were lubricant oil additives and metallic components. Also, the regeneration treatment increased the PGMs ratio, BET surface area, and average pore diameter of TWCs. The catalytic activity results indicated that the spent TWCs have the possibility for removing VOCs. Moreover, the employed acid treatments greatly enhanced the catalytic activity of the spent TWCs. Especially, nitric and oxalic acids provided the most improvement in the catalytic behavior. The catalytic activities of the regenerated TWCs were significantly influenced by the containing platinum ratios rather than the removal ratios of contaminants and the changes in the structural properties offered by the acid treatments.
