A certain group of phytochemicals such as isoflavone have been proven to act as a phytoestrogen. After thorough the study of different bibliographic herbs excluding soybeans, dates, pomegranates, and other publicized plants, three different edible herbs by Korean Food Regulation were extracted for the animal study on the effect of estrogen replacement. The herbal extract(FGF271) has been orally administered into 51 weeks old partial ovariectomized rats for 5 weeks with the different dosages of 100 and 1,000 mg/kg, respectively. It was observed that 1) serum estrogen level was increased in both 100 and 1,000 mg/kg group, 2) the distension of uterus was made dose dependently and significantly different in 1,000 mg/kg group (p.0.05) from control in the gross findings, 3) the weight of uterus was increased in 1,000 mg/kg group, and 4) the action on reproductive tissues was clear in the microscopic findings in terms of hyperplasia of endometrial epithelial cell, cystic change of submucosa, dilatation of uterus (significantly increased in 1,000 kg/mg), and follicular cystic changes in ovary. As a result, FGF271 seemed to act as a phytoestrogen by inducing the change in ovary and uterus and by increasing the serum estrogen concentration.
The purpose of this study was to compare clinical results of guided tissue regeneration(GTR) using either a nonresorbable ePTFE membrane or a resorbable membrane made from a synthetic copolymer of glycolide and lactide(PLGA) in the treatment of human class Ⅱ furcation defects. The ePTEE membranes were applied to 16 patients with maxillary molar buccal class Ⅱ furcation defects as Group I, PLGA membranes were applied to 15 patients with maxillary molar buccal class Ⅱ furcation defects as Group Ⅱ, ePTFE membranes were applied to 20 patients with mandibular molar buccal class Ⅱ furcation defects as Group Ⅲ and PLGA membranes were applied to 20 patients with mandibular molar buccal class Ⅱ furcation defects as Group Ⅳ and bone graft materials(DFDBA) were applied in all groups. Probing depth, gingival recession, clinical attachment level, tooth mobility and sulcus bleeding index(SBI) were measured at baseline, 3, 6 and 12months postoperatively. In addition, membrane exposure levels were measured at surgery, 1, 2 and 6weeks postoperatively and postoperative complications were evaluated. The results were as follows: In all groups, there were statistically significant differences in probing depth reduction, gain of clinical attachment and mobility reduction at values of 3, 6 and 12months postoperatively compared to values of baseline, whereas no significant differences in SBI except Group I and gingival recession(p<0.05). Membrane exposure levels were increased at 1, 2 and 6weeks postopratively compared to value of baseline in Group I(p<0.05). There were no statistically significant differences between ePTFE and PLGA membrane in probing depth, clinical attachment level and SBI. There were minimal gingival recession and membrane exposure in Group Ⅳ and pain and swelling were the most common postoperative complications in Group Ⅱ, Ⅲ(p<0.05). In conclusion, this study showed that both nonresorbable membrane and resorbable membrane were effective similarly in the treatment of class Ⅱ furcation defects, without statistical differences in clinical measurements.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate on the biodegradability, biocompatibility and tissue regenerative capacity of synthetic biodegradable $mernbranes-Resolut^{(R)}$, $Guidor^{(R)}$ and $Biomesh^{(R)}$. To evaluate the cell attachment on the membranes, in vitro, the number of gingival fibroblasts attached to each membrane was counted by hemocytometer. Cytotoxicity test for the membranes was performed by MTT test with gingival fibroblast For evaluation of guided- bone regenerative potential, the amount of new bone formation in the rat calvarial defects(5mm in diameter) beneath the membranes was observed for two weeks and examined of the specimens by Massons trichrome staining. Biodegradability was observed for 2, 4, 8 and 12 weeks after implantation of each materials under the skin of rats and examined the specimens with H & E staining. The number of cell attachment were the greatest in $Biomesh^{(R)}$ and followed by $Resolut^{(R)}$. Cell viability of three membranes was almost similar levels. Biodegradability of $Resolut^{(R)}$ was the highest among three membrane and the potential of guided bone regeneration was the greatest in the $Biomesh^{(R)}$ and $Resolut^{(R)}$ was followed. These results suggested that commercially available biodegradable membranes were non-toxic and highly potential to guided bone regeneration.
The barrier membranes for GTR procedure could be affected bY bacterial contamination after exposure to oral environment. This study was done to evaluate whether the tetracycline impregnated barrier membranes could inhibit bacterial attachment and penetration into membranes. The resorbable membrane(polylactic and polyglycolide copolymer, $Resolute^{(R)}$, W.L Gore and Associates, Inc..USA) and the non-resorbable membrane(e-PTFE; Gore-TexTM, W.L. Gore & Associates, Inc.,USA) were cut into 4mm discs and trated with 5% tridodecylmethylammonium chloride solution in ethanol and dried in air. The membranes were immersed in tetracycline(TC) solution (100mg/ml, pH 8.0) and dried. To the maxillary canine-premolar region in six periodontally healthy volunteers, removable acrylic devices were inserted, on which 8 cylindrical chambers were glued with TC impregnated and non-impregnated discs, the membrane discs were examined for bacterial attachment and penetration, and structural changes under SEM and LM. From the 1st day to the 7th day, membranes showed bacterial plaque formation composed of cocci and rods. Thereafter, filamentous bacteria appeared and the plaque thickness increased. The TC impregnated e-PTFE membranes showed less bacterial attachment and delayed in bacterial plaque maturation than non-treated membranes. As for bacterial penetration, the TC impregnated e-PTFE membranes showed superficial invasion and infrequent presence of bacteria in unexposed inner surface at the 4th week. while the non-treated e-PTFE membranes showed deep bacterial invasion at the 2nd week and frequent presence of internal bacteria at the 4th week. The resorbable membranes started to be resorbed at the 2nd week and were perforated at the 4th week, regardless of TC treatment. In conclusion, bacterial plaque formation and penetration was efficiently delayed in TC impregnated e-PTFE membranes, whereas resorbable membranes were similar in bacterial invasion due to membrane degradation and perforation, regardless of TC treatment.
The goal of periodontal therapy is the regeneration of the periodontium lost by periodontal disease. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the regenerative potential of the autogenous bone graft and guided tissue regeneration in the treatment of periodontal bony defect in dogs. Experimental periodontitis were induced in the mandibular left 3rd premolar and right 3rd and 4th premolars of 5 dogs using orthodontic ligature wire. After 6 weeks, the ligature wire removed, surgical procedure were performed as follows. 1) control group : Flap operation(Mn.Lt 3rd premolar) 2) experimental group I : Flap operation + autogenous bone graft (Mn.Rt. 3rd premolar) 3) experimental group II : Flap operation + Gore-Tex membrane (Mn.Rt. 4th premoalr) Thereafter, dogs were sacrificed on the 1,2,4,8,16th week and the specimens were prepared and stained with hematoxyline-eosin stain for the light microscopic examination. The results of this study were as follows. 1. The apical migration of junctional epithelium was most remarkable in the flap operation and the experimental group II was less than the experimental group I. 2. In the formation of new alveolar bone, it was found in experimental group I,II and experimental group I is more than II. In the control group, few bone formation was found. 3. In the formation of new cementum, it was found in experimental group I,II and experimental group II is more than I. So, the periodontal therapy combined with autogenous and guided tissue regeneration will be produce the periodontal regeneration.

Werner's syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive disorder manifesting as premature aging. It is also known to be characterized by a high frequency of malignant tumors, especially sarcomas. However, Werner's syndrome may be not only a premature aging disease but also a cancer syndrome, because the malignant tumors in these patients are different from those of normal population with respect to involved site, histological type, and age of onset. Recent studies found Werner's syndrome was caused by a mutation of Werner helicase suggesting that WRN helicase may participate in metabolism and repair of DNA. And a dysfunction of WRN helicase may induce the genomic instability causing somatic mutations. Further studies of Werner's syndrome associated with sarcoma might give much informations about the normal aging process and the pathogenesis of sarcomas.
This study was designed to compare the effects of treatment using chitosan membrane $(Nanogide-C^{(R)})$ resorbable barrier with control treated by polylactic acid/polylacticglycolic acid membrane(PLA/PLGA membrane, $Biomesh^{(R)}$). 44 furcation defecs from 44 patients with class 2 furcation degree were used for this study, 22 sites of them were treated by chitosan membrane as experimental group and 22 site were treated by PLA/PLGA membrane as control group. Clinical parameters including probing depth, gingival recession, attachment level and radiographic examination were evlauated at base line, 1 month, 2 month and 3 month. after surgery. Statistical test used to analyze these data included paired t-test, one way ANOVA. The results are as follows : 1. Probing depth was significanlly decreased in the two group and there were significant differences between groups(p<0.05). 2. Gingival recession was not significanlly increased in the two group and there were no significant differences between groups(p<0.05). 3. Loss of attachment was statistically decreased in the two group and there were no significant differences between groups(p<0.05). 4. Horizontal bone level was significanlly increased in the two group and there were significant differences between groups(p<0.05). On the basis of these results, chitoans resorbable membrane has similar potential to PLA/PLGA membrane in GTR for furcation defect.

Regeneration of Periodontium with PRP does not only improve regeneration rate and density of bone but have a possibility to estimate faster healing process for soft tissue. And also, autogenous bone and xenogenic bone graft are effective on regeneration of periodontium. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of autogenous bone and xenogenic bone $(BBP^{(R)})$ grafts with the PRP technique on regeneration of periodontium. 52 Generally healthy Pt. who had pocket depth 5mm at any of 6 surfaces of the teeth were in the study at Dept. of Perio. in Dankook Dental Hospital. Open Flap was treated for 18 infra-bony pockets as control group, autogenous bone with PRP was inserted for 25 infrabony pockets as first test group, and $(BBP^{(R)})$ with PRP was inserted for 22 infrabony pockets as 2nd test group. Then evaluation was made after 3 and 6 months 1. There were significant differences between average probing pocket depth and clinical attachment level of 3, 6 months and minimal and maximal attachment level after 6 months each other. 2. There were significant differences in average probing pocket depth of control group and 2nd experimental group between 1 and 6 months. For clinical attachment level and minimal and maximal proving attachment level, there was a significant difference after 6 month of surgery. 3. There was no significant difference between two test groups for average probing depth, clinical attachment level, and minimal and maximal probing attachment level. As the result, PRP with bone graft could be very effective for regeneration of periodontium and there was no difference between xenogenic bone and autogenous bone.
In woody plant germplasms, using prefrozen dormant buds for materials is one way to achieve successful cryopreservation. The protocol of cryopreservation for White birch (Betula platyphylla var. japonica) winter vegetative buds is the following. First, the branches of White birch were collected in January 20, when the vegetative buds were still in a state of quiescence. The winter buds with about 5㎜ of xylem tissue were removed from the branches. They were dehydrated to moisture contents about 44% by air dry treatment. The buds were prefrozen, with the temperature being decreased by 5∼-20$\^{C}$ and then transfered to the LN(liquid nitrogen) maintained below -l96$\^{C}$. After cryopreservation, the vegetative buds were rapidly thawed in a water bath at 40$\pm$5$\^{C}$. In this case, the cell survival rate of samples was about 86%. After sterilization, buds were then cultured on MS medium. These results demonstrate the feasibility for cryopreservation of winter vegetation buds of Betula platyphylla var. japonica.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical efficacy of guided tissue regeneration(GTR) technique using chitosan nanofiber membrane and to compare it to the clinical efficacy following GTR using PLA/PLGA(copolymer of polvlactic acid and polylacticglycolic acid) membrane in mandibular class II furcation defects in human. The chitosan nanofiber membranes were applied to the mandibular class II furcation defects of 13 patients(test group) and PLA/PLGA membranes were applied to those of 11 patients(control group). Probing pocket depth, clinical attachment level, gingival recession, plaque index and gingival index were measured at baseline and 3 months postoperatively. Vertical and horizontal furcation defect depth were measured at surgery. Both groups were statistically analyzed by Wilcoxon signed Ranks Test and Mann-Whitney Test using SPSS program. The results were as follows: 1. Probing pocket depth, clinical attachment loss and gingival index were significantly reduced at 3 months postoperatively compared to values of baseline in both groups(p<0.05). 2. Gingival recession and plaque index were not significantly decreased at 3 months postoperatively compared to values of baseline in both groups. 3. No significant difference between two groups could be detected with regard to changes of probing pocket depth, gingival recession, clinical attachment level, plaque index and gingival index at 3 months postoperatively. In conclusion, chitosan nanofiber membrane is effective in the treatment of human mandibular class II furcation defects and a longer period study is needed to fully evaluate the outcomes.
