This study evaluated quality characteristics of spirulina (0.63, 1.25, and 2.5%, all w/w) added noodles during storage at 4C. Total bacterial counts in raw spirulina added noodles were higher than those of the control during storage, but no bacteria were detected in cooked noodles. Escherichia coli was not detected in any group. The weight loss, volume loss, and moisture absorption of spirulina added noodles were somewhat greater than control values. Moisture contents of spirulina added noodles both before and after cooking decreased as the spirulina level increased. During storage, moisture loss from spirulina added noodles was a little greater than from the control. Hunter color values for L (lightness), a (redness), and b (yellowness) decreased during storage. The spirulina added noodles had significantly greater hardness, cohesiveness, gumminess, and chewiness compared with the control. The antioxidant activity of spirulina added noodles increased with spirulina level. A sensory preference test revealed that noodles with 1.25% spirulina received the highest scores for chewiness, overall preference, and buying intention. It is suggested that spirulina could be added to noodles at a concentration of up to 1.25% to improve quality.
The occurrence of thrombotic occlusion & endothelial injuries at the site of anastomosis have been considered as major problems in microvascular surgery. The purpose of this study was to ascertain whether a end-in-end(sleeve, telescope) anastomosis compared favorably with end-to-end anastomosis in healing procedures on the endothelium and to study the possibility of clinical application in end-in-end method. The microvascular anastomoses have been performed with end-in-end method in the femoral arteries of 20 rats group, also with end-to-end method on the same arteries of another 20 rats group, and then the four anastomosed vessels in subdivided groups on each group were taken after period of 1, 3, 7, 14, 21 days following by anastomoses for scanning electron microscope observation. The results were as following: 1. The patency rate was 90% in the end-in-end group and 85%in the end-to-end group and late thrombus occurred at 7, 14 days on both groups, which suggested -consistent monitoring of patency was required for two weeks at least. 2. Platelet aggregates at the site of anastomosis began to organize on post-operation 3 days and in the end-in-end group, the initially decreased lumen of inserted vessel was gradually increasing on 7 days due to atrophy of the medial layers. 3. Re-endothelialization was completed between 7 and 14 days in end-in-end group, whereas between 14 and 21 days in end-to-end group.
Petrological and geochemical characteristics of A-type granite were studied from the Namsan and Tohamsan granites in the vicinity of Kyeongju city, southeastern Korea. The Namsan granite consists of hypersolvus alkali-feldspar granite in the northern part and subsolvus alkali-feldspar to biotite granite in the southern part. This hypersolvus granite usually has miarolitic cavities and is characteristically composed of quartz, single homogeneous one-feldspar (alkali feldspar) forming tabular microperthite crystals, or micrographic intergrowth with quartz, and interstitial biotite (Fe-rich annite), alkali amphibole (riebeckitic arfvedsonite) and fluorite. Petrographic and petrochemical characteristics indicate that the hypersolvus granite and subsolvus granite from the Namsan belogn to the A-type and I-type granitoid, respectively. The A-type granite is petrochemically distinguished from the I-type Bulgugsa granites of Late Cretaceous in South Korea, by higher abundance of $SiO_2$, $Na_2O$, $Na_2O+K_2O$, large highly charged cations such as Rb, Nb, Y, Zr, Ga, Th, Ce. U the REEs and Ga/Al ratio, and lower abundance of $TiO_2$, $Al_2O_3$, CaO, $P_2O_5$, MnO, MgO, Ba, Sr, Eu. The total abundance of REEs is 293 ppm to 466 ppm, showing extensively fractionated granitic compositon, and REEs/chondrite normalized pattern shows flat form with strong Eu '-' anomaly ($Eu/Eu^{\ast}$=0.03-0.05). A-type granite from the Namsan area is thought to have been generated late in the magmatic/orogenic cycle after the production of I-type granite and by direct, high-temperature partial melting of melt-depleted, relatively dry tonalitic/granulitic lower crustal material with underplating by mantle-derived basaltic magmas associated with subduction.
Cryoprotectivity of garlic bulb caused by the freezing point depression was studied to establish the possibility of preserving the garlic at subzero temperature. Freezing point of fresh garlic tissue showed almost consistency, ranged from $-4^{\circ}C\;to\;-5^{\circ}C$ regardless of the cultivation area. However, the freezing point was varied with the postharvest treatment and storage conditions, so that freezing point of fresh garlic was $-3.5^{\circ}C$ before predrying, $-4.5^{\circ}C$ after predrying, $-5.5^{\circ}C$ after 5 months of storage and that of dead tissue was $-2.5^{\circ}C$. Freezing lethality of fresh garlic bulb preserved at -4, -6.5 and $-15.5^{\circ}C$ were 0, 10 and 70%, respectively. From these results, it was concluded that critical lethal temperature might be $-5{\sim}-6^{\circ}C$. The respiration rate of garlic bulb decreased with lowering the storage temperature down to $-4^{\circ}C$. $Q_{10}$ value was 2 at the temperature range of $-4{\sim}-5^{\circ}C$, 3 at $5{\sim}15^{\circ}C$ and 1.2 at $15{\sim}37^{\circ}C$. In conclusion, optimal temperature for garlic storage was $-4^{\circ}C$ when considering the cryoprotectivity of garlic bulb at subzero temperature.

We examined the effects of unripe black raspberry water extract (UBR-W) on lipid metabolism and oxidative stress in mice. C57BL/6J mice were divided into 4 groups: those administered a control diet (CTL), high-fat diet (HFD), UBR-W and simvastatin for 12 weeks. In the HFD group, LDL cholesterol were significantly higher than in the CTL group. However, the UBR-W treated group showed dose-dependent reduction of plasma LDL levels. Hepatic total lipid, TC, and malondialdehyde were significantly increased in hyperlipidemic mice. However, supplementation with either UBR-W or simvastatin effectively reduced these lipid profiles and lipid peroxidation. UBR-W increased mRNA expression of the LDL receptor, sterol regulatory element binding protein 2 (SREBP2), 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl (HMG)-CoA reductase and ATP-binding cassette transporter A1 (ABCA1) compared to that observed in the HFD group. In addition, UBR-W and simvastatin showed significantly reduced oxidized LDL uptake by the scavenger receptor CD36. These results suggest that UBR-W is useful for treatment and prevention of hyperlipidemia and lipid peroxidation.

The purpose of this experiment was to know the healing effects of saualene on the burned mouses. The experimental groups were divided into seven groups: the control group, the burned groups, and 50 treated groups after burned. All groups except the control group burned with second degree on a dorsoanterior part. All groups that treated with 50 adapted three drops of pure squalene at 10 seconds interval; one time a day. The histological and ultrastructural changes during 10 days after burned were observed by light and electron microscope. Under the light microscope, all parts of epidermal layer of the burned groups were wounded deeper than the 50 treated groups. At 6 and 10 days groups with 50 treated, especially 10 days, the basal layer was greatly differentiated, and the prickle cells in the spinous layer were greatly increased in number. Under the electron microscope, the cell divisions of basal layer in all groups that treated with 50 were more activated and rapidly regenerated than the all burned groups. Especially, some fantastic results obtained from the 10 days group with SQ treated; much thicker spinous layer than the control group, many prickle cells, fine intercellular bridges, and healthy basal layer contained melanocytes. These results suggest that squalene may active the epidermis growth factor (EGF), acts as scavenger, and provide sources of energy in the membrane system. The results of this experiment consider that squalene has specific effects for burn healing and regeneration.

The dynamic elastic properties of metal matrix composites were investigated by resonant ultrasound spectroscopy(RUS). The composites used in this study consisted of 2124 aluminum alloy reinforced with different concentrations of SiC particles. RUS can determine the nine independent elastic stiffness($C_{ij}$) for the orthorhombic symmetry on a small specimen simultaneously. The elastic constants were determined as a function of the volume fraction. A concept of effective aspect ratio. which combine the aspect ratio and the orientation of reinforcement. was used to calculate the initial moduli from Mori-Tanaka theory for the input of RUS minimization code. Young's moduli can be obtained from the measured stiffnesses. The results show that the elastic stiffness increases with increment of the particle content. The behavior of elastic stiffness indicates that the particle redistribution induced by the extrusion process enlarges the transversely isotropic symmetry as the fraction of reinforced particles increase. This relationship could be used for determination of the volume fractions of reinforcement as a potential tool of nondestructive material characterization.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of 50% ethanol extract of ripe black raspberry (Rubus occidentalis, RBR) on hypertension in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) and in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibition and activation of nitric oxide production by endothelial nitric oxide synthase were significantly regulated by RBR in HUVEC cells. Moreover, the SHR showed significantly higher levels of blood pressure, ACE, renin, endothelin-1, and interleukin-6 than Wistar Kyoto rats (WKY). However, treatment with captopril and RBR decreased the levels of these hypertension-related events in the SHR. The renal arteriole showed greater media thickness/lumen diameter (%) in the SHR than in the WKY. However, media thickness/lumen diameter (%) was reduced in SHR by treatment with captopril and RBR. In addition, the number of eosinophilic cardiac muscle cells was decreased in the heart muscles after treatment with captopril and RBR. Therefore, this study suggests that 50% ethanol extract of RBR may be useful for the prevention and treatment of high blood pressure.
Carbon dots (CDs) are few nanometer-sized carbon-based nanoparticles and emerging candidate materials in various fields such as biosensors and bioimaging due to their excellent optical properties and high biocompatibility. However, most CDs, emitting blue light, have limited their application in biomedical fields due to the low penetration of short-wavelength lights into the biological system. Therefore, there has been enormous need to develop long-wavelength emitting CDs. In this study, red-emitting CDs were successfully synthesized through the hydrothermal reaction of p-phenylenediamine with hydrochloric acid. In addition, the effect of the amount of hydrochloric acid on the formation of carbon dots, resulting in the variation of the chemical structures of CDs, were investigated, which was confirmed with the intensive structural analyses using infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It was found that the chemical structure of CDs governed their optical properties and quantum yield. Therefore, this study provides an insight into the role of acid in forming red-emitting CDs as the optimal probe for biomedical application.

The effect of blueberries on the quality characteristics of strawberry jam substituted with 50% sugar, glucose syrup 10% was investigated. Strawberry jams with 5, 10 and 20% blueberries in place of strawberry were prepared and evaluated for moisture content, reducing sugar, total acidity, pH, color, total sugar (°Brix), pectin content, anthocyanin content, DPPH radical scavenging activity, texture analysis and sensory characteristics. As the amount of blueberries increased, total acidity, °Brix , reducing sugar content and anthocyanin content of jams increased, while pH decreased, moisture content has changed little. The DPPH radical scavenging activities of the 80% methanol extract from jams were 75.33%, 85.75%, 91.23% and 92.73% at a concentration of 8 mg/mL. Radical scavenging activity increased with the added concentration of blueberries. The lightness decreased with addition of blueberries, but the redness and yellowness increased. The sensory scores for jams increased with the increase of blueberry content; however, strawberry jams with 10% blueberries showed the best scores.
