  • Using a finite volume ocean circulation model based on an unstructured grid (FVCOM), we studied the structure of a fresh water bulge that influences on the Region Of Freshwater Influence. Fresh water discharged a river forms a coastal boundary current to the righthand side and a cyclonically circulation freshwater bulge that grows with time. In the middle of the bulge, vertical motions bring fresh water to the bottom. When tidal motions are included, the bulge disappears while the boundary currents becomes wider. Through a simple comparison of areas occupied low salinity water we quantified vertical and horizontal mixing due to the tide and showed that the tidal motion enhances the vertical mixing. During the first few tidal cycles right after the onset of the river discharge, due to tidal excursion the horizontal mixing becomes stronger. The vertical mixing by the tide mixes the fresh water After a certain time the water around the river mouth is well mixed and the horizontal excursion of the fresh water near the river mouth does not have much effect on the horizontal mixing. When there is no tidal motion horizontal mixing is mainly by the inertial instability at the surface and the horizontal mixing becomes stronger over time.

  • In this study, spectral analysis was conducted to identify environmental factors af ecting short-term changes in water temperature in the East, West and South coasts of Korea. The data used in the spectrum analysis is the 2016 summer water temperature, air temperature, tide level and wind data provided by Korea Hydrographic & Oceanographic Agency. In power spectrum results, peaks of water temperature and tide level were observed at same periods in West Sea (Incheon, Pyeungteak, Gunsan and Mokpo) and South Sea (Wando, Goheung, Yeosu, Tongyeong and Masan) where mean tidal range was more than 100 cm. On the other hand, periodicity of water temperature did not appear in East Sea and Busan where the mean tidal range was small. Coherence analysis showed that water temperature was highly correlated with tide in West Sea and three stations(Wando, Goheung and Tongyeong) of South Sea. Especially, correlation between water temperature and tide level in Wando and Tongyeong presented 0.96 at semi-diurnal period. Water temperature in Yeosu seems to have influenced by tide and inflow of fresh water. In Masan, water temperature is influenced by south wind, tide and inflow of fresh water. In East Sea, influence of tide on water temperature is small due to current and small tidal range. As a result of comparing the time series graph, stations where the correlation between water temperature and tide is high show that relatively cold water was inputted at flood tide and flow out at ebb tide. short-term variation of water temperature was affected by tide, but long-term variation over a month was affected by air temperature.

  • In order to elucidate temporal variations of temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), suspended particulate matter (SPM), dissolved inorganic nutrients, and chlorophyll a, we performed 25-hour continuous monitoring in the Seomjin River Estuary in March (dry season) and July (rainy season) 2006. We also investigated spatial variations of marine environmental parameters across a saline gradient. In the Seomjin River Estuary, continuous monitoring results revealed that salinity variations were mainly affected by tidal cycle in the dry season and by river discharge in the rainy season. In the dry season, the spatio-temporal distribution of dissolved inorganic nutrient (nitrate, nitrite, and silicate) concentrations showed a good correlation with tidal cycle. While nutrient concentrations in rainy season showed not much variance in time. There were 6 and 4 times higher dissolved inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations in the rainy season than those in the dry season, respectively. Silicate concentration was 43 times higher in the rainy season than that in the dry season. Chlorophyll a concentration was higher in the dry season than that in the rainy season showing high nutrient concentrations. The results of this study, spatio-temporal variations of marine environmental factors are determined by both tidal cycle and river discharge. It seems that chlorophyll a concentration is related to the river discharge than dissolved inorganic nutrient distribution.

  • Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency(KHOA) carried out a research project named 'Marine Fisheries Infrastructure Construction and Technology Training for the Philippines' as part of the 1st Official Development Assistance(ODA) from 2015 to 2018. It is preparing for the 2nd ODA project which will begin in 2020. Besides, recently, the Philippines is paying attention to marine territory management and response capability due to problems such as the sea-level rise and coastal erosion caused by climate change. Therefore, before 2nd ODA to the Philippines, this study analyzed the vertical ocean model on the vertical datum in Korea and suggests the direction of development of the vertical ocean modeling system for the vertical datum in the Philippines using the observed data from the permanent tide station which was built by the Philippines ODA research project over the last four years. Moreover, as a pilot study, the Sulu Sea in the Philippines was selected and analyzed by harmonic analysis method. At each tide station, constants for correction had been computed. And the grid-based tidal model was constructed based on this study. As a result of the study, similar tidal characteristic were observed when the prediction and the measured tide were compared by applying the constants for correction between two station in the sea area with similar tidal level. These results could be used as basic data for the 2nd ODA to the Philippines, and contributed to construct and maintain a close cooperation and friendship between Korea and the Philippines.

  • Field measurements and numerical simulations using EFDC model were performed to quantify the changes of water circulation near Gusipo coast located in the Yellow Sea of Korea to estimate the impact of the construction of the coastal structures (jetty, groin, Gusipo port and bridge). The model predicted tide and tidal currents agreed reasonably well with the measurements. The maximum currents during spring tide near the Gusipo Beach (GB) have the range of 20~40 cm/sec whereas those off the GB range from 60 to 80 cm/sec. The typical patterns of tidal current show parallel with the local isobath. Tidal currents flow northeastward during the flood tide whereas the currents during the ebb tide flow southwestward. The current speeds at shielded waters after the construction of coastal structures strongly decreased as compared with those before the construction. The tidal volume due to the construction of coastal structures was estimated using the depth averaged velocity for 24 hours of spring tide. Tidal volume after construction of coastal structures was compared with initial state (before construction). Tidal volume at present state (after construction of jetty, groin, Gusipo port and bridge) decreased by 28.4% as compared with that of the initial state. The volume after construction of jetty and groin decreased by 21.3%, and the volume after construction of Gusipo port and bridge decreased by 9.8%.

  • In september 2004 and 2006, topographical and sedimentological survey were carried out using multibeam echosounder, which were to investigate shape characteristics, temporal changes and control factors of the subaqueous dunes in the southern Gyeonggi Bay. The present tidal current and sedimentary characteristics of study area make conditions that the sizes (length and height) of large subaqueous dunes are developed and maintained sufficiently. The change of sedimentary characteristics over time, the decrease in grain size causes reduction in the height of very large subaqueous dunes. Therefore it shows that the grain size of surface sediments is a primary control factor in defining subaqueous dune sizes in the study area.

  • Coastal waste dump in Pohang is composed of slags and sludge of POSCO. Hydraulic parameters in the coastal waste dump are very different from those in municipal landfills and general unconsolidated or fractured aquifers. In the waste dump pumping or slug tests are not adequate for the estimation of hydraulic parameters. Time-lag and amplitude of the tidal fluctuation of groundwater table are used to determine the hydraulic parameters. Groundwater table at the groundwater observation wells is about 40 cm higher than the sea level. The contributing factors of the groundwater-rise are estimated. Vertical profile of some chemical constituents in groundwater indicates the gradual transition of the fresh groundwater at the uppermost position to the sea water at the bottom.
