  • In this study we investigated the characteristics of fluid flow and heat transfer within a coolant passage in the cylinder head assembly of an internal combustion engine by using a commercial CFD code, CFX The complex coolant passage of the cylinder head assembly was modelled by suitable choice of a grid system and careful attention was paid in the construction of meshes near the walls where significant cooling occurs. To treat the simultaneous heating and cooling of the combustion walls we invented a methodology allowing a heat source within the solid wall and the convective cooling at the interface between the solid and the fluid. We managed to reproduce the experimental results by adjusting parameters appropriately. We have found that high temperature was concentrated at the surface of the cylinder jacket. It turned out that the effect of oil cooling from the piston head was unexpectedly significant. On the other hand the effect of cooling from the ambient air is almost negligible. The CFD method proposed in this study is believed to be useful in the early stage of the design of the engine-cooling system.

  • Crashworthiness design is of special interest in automotive industry and in the transportation safety field to ensure the vehicle structural integrity and more importantly the occupant safety in the event of the crash. Front side assembly is one of the most important energy absorbing components in relating to the crashworthiness design of vehicle. The structure and shape of the front side assemblies are different depending on auto-makers and size of vehicles. Thus, it is not easy to grab an insight on designer's intention when you glance at a new front side member without experiences. In this paper, we have performed the explicit nonlinear dynamic finite element analysis on the front side assembly of passenger cars to identify the mechanical roles of major parts in relation to collapse modes from the viewpoint of reverse engineering. To do this, we have performed crash FE analysis for the two different assemblies of small car and heavy passenger car and have compared dynamic behaviors of the two.

  • Efficiency characteristics of centrifugal turbopumps for a liquid rocket engine were investigated. Predicting the performance of pumps for a turbopump assembly test, the variation on pump efficiency by working fluids was analyzed from pump component tests. Water and liquid nitrogen (LN2) were used for the component test, kerosene (Jet A-1) and liquid oxygen (LOX) were adapted for the turbopump assembly (TPU) test as working fluids. Overall performance of the pumps was investigated covering design/off-design operating points and the pump efficiency on the environment of real media (LOX/kerosene) could be modified from the pump component tests.

  • Most design changes are due to interferences and fit-up as parts are assembled if such a large product as an automobile or an aircraft is developed by many concurrent engineers. In this part (1) of the thesis, the assembly-centric modeling methodology with CAD systems is proposed in order to reduce the design changes. Unlike part-centric modeling method, a part is modeled with its own coordinate system which is used in downstream process as machining and measuring. The part coordinates initially have the same orientation as its assembly which is predefined in BOM (Bill of Material). Then, the corrdinates origin of the part is moved to its location to be assembled from that of its assembly coordinate system. To implement this methodology, the position data of the part w.r.t. its assembly are stored in a database to build the same hierarchical assembling structure as BOM structure. This modeling approach has the advantage of reflecting asembling sequence, because the process of positioning parts is similar to that of real assembling. And with the method, a designer can easily adjust all of the part positions of an assembly to resolve interferences if he modifies just the coordinates origin of the assembly, which results in moving included parts and assemblies together.

  • A crush switch assembly(CSA) connected to an impact fuze provides electrical signal for detonation of the loaded main charge when an impact with the target is detected. Because the CSA experiences continuous changes in flight environment such as changes in velocity, vibration, and stresses, it is necessary to accurately predict the behavior of the fuze to maintain functionality during flight and to detonate when necessary. In this paper, random vibration analysis for flight environment and impact analysis on target hit are performed using FEA. Then, high speed impact tests are performed with the original and scaled down models to ensure operation validation of the manufactured products. The test results are then compared with M&S results to verify the capability of currently modeled CSA.

  • In the case of helicopters, the development of parts technology is rapidly changing, and the complexity is rapidly increasing. Particularly, the surge of various electric and electronic systems is recognized as a problem that is directly related to the safety of the helicopter. Due to these problems, there is a growing interest in reliability evaluation in the face of the problem of confirming and certifying the reliability of parts in the development stage. In this paper, the analysis of the failure mechanism of the wiper system was carried out, and the priority and importance of each failure mode were checked by using the results, and major stress factors were derived and the corresponding acceleration model was selected. Also, the accelerated lifetime test time was calculated according to the life test time, acceleration status and acceleration level of the steady state by using the selected acceleration model and characteristic values.

  • The present analysis quantifies the particulate contamination of KOMPSAT-2 satellite until in orbit life. Assumptions are defined about integration and test conditions and durations, then a budget is drawn. As KOMPSAT-2 activities are carried out in good cleanliness conditions, the particulate contamination budgets for satellite and instrument surfaces at BOL is fair. To summarise, in the baseline launch conditions (class 10,000) the contribution of satellite AIT and launch activities adds 500 PPM to MSC and STA apertures (telescope mirrors ; front lens ; baffle), 20,000 PPM to MSC and STA outer surfaces, 14 000 PPM to plate-form horizontal surfaces, 1400 PPM to plate-form vertical surfaces, 1000 PPM to plate-form radiators and less than 300 PPM to solar arra.
