  • Population ecology of Cobitis tetralineata was examined at Churyeong Stream, Seomjin River, Korea. C. tetralineata inhabited on the sand bottoms with $10{\sim}20cm/see$ in current velocity, and $30{\sim}150cm$ in water depth. This species was active on the sand during the daylight hours from March to October, but they hibernated in the inside of the sand during the winter season. Sex ratio of female to male was 1:0.57, and female was $20{\sim}30mm$ (TL) larger than male. The age group of C. tetralineata (female) population showed that the $20{\sim}40mm$ group is 0+ years old, the $45{\sim}65mm$ group 1+ years old, the $65{\sim}90mm$ group 2+ years old, and the group longer than 90 mm over 3 years old. Males $13{\sim}14$ months old after hatching had lamina circularis at the base of its pectoral fin as a secondary sexual character. And in its spawning season, lateral color pattern of male was changed as a sexual dimorphism. The spawning season may be from late June to middle July, $22{\sim}26^{\circ}C$ water temperature. The average number of mature eggs in ovary was about $1,288{\pm}583(474{\sim}2,976)$, egg diameter was about $0.98{\pm}0.1mm$. C. tetralineata fed mainly on Chironomidae, Arcellidae, Branchioda and Algae. The feeding rate was the highest in April and September, but they did not fed in the winter.

  • Two-dimensional numerical experiments and field surveys have been conducted to clarify some environmental variations in the flow and sedimentation in the adjacent seas after the construction of a tidal embankment. Velocities of flow and water levels in the bay decreased after the construction of the barrage. When the freshwater was instantly released into the bay, the conditions of flow were unaltered, with the exception of a minor variation in velocities and tidal levels around the sluices at the ebb flow. The computational results showed that freshwater released at the low water reached the outside of the bay and then returned to the inside with the tidal currents at the high water. The front sea regions of the embankment had a variety of sedimentary phases such as a clayish silt, a silty clay and a sandy clayish silt. However, a clayish silt was prevalent in the middle of the bay. On the other hand, the skewness, which reflects the behaviour of sediments, was $\{pm}0.1$ at the front regions of the embankment while it was more than ±0.3 in the middle of the bay. Analytical results of drilling samples acquired from the front of the sluice gates showed that the lower part of the sediments consists of very fine silty or clayish grains. The upper surface layer consisted of shellfish, such as oyster or barnacle with a thickness of 40~50 cm. Therefore, it seemed that the lower part of the sediments would have been one of intertidal zones prior to the embankment construction while the upper shellfish layer would have been debris of shellfish farms formed in the adjacent seas after the construction of the embankment. This shows the difference of sedimentary phases reflected the influence of a tidal embankment construction.

  • Acoustic backscatter profiles were measured by Eco-sounder along an east-west section in the mid-eastern Yellow Sea and at an anchoring station in the low salinity region off the Keum River estuary in September 2012, with observing physical water property structure by CTD. Tidal front was established around the sand ridge developed in 50 m depth region. Internal waves measured by Eco-sounder during low tide period in the eastern side of the sand ridge were nonlinear depression waves with wave height of 15 m and mean wavelength of 500 m. These waves were interpreted into tidal internal waves that were produced by tidal current flowing over the sand ridge to the southeast. When weakly non-linear soliton model was applied, propagation speed and period of these internal depression wave were 50 m/s and 16~18 min. Red tides by Dinoflagelates Cochlodinium were observed in the sea surface where strong acoustic scattering layer was raised up to 7 m. Hourly CTD profiles taken at the anchoring station off the Keum River estuary showed the halocline depth change by tidal current and land-sea breeze. When tidal current flowed strongly to the northeast during flood period and land-breeze of 7 m/s blew to the west, the halocline was temporally raised up as much as 2 m and acoustic profile images showed a complex structure in the surface layer within 5-m depth: in tens of seconds the declined acoustic structure of strong and weak scattering signals alternatively appeared with entrainment and intrusion shape. These acoustic profile structures in the surface mixed layer were observed for the first time in the coastal sea of the mid-eastern Yellow Sea. The acoustic profile images and turbidity data suggest that relatively transparent low-layer water be intruded or entrained into the turbid upper-layer water by vertical shear between flood current and land breeze-induced surface current.
