L2 learners deal with communication problems encountered during the course of their oral communication by employing what are known as communication strategies(CSs). As CSs play a significant role in communication and language learning, identifying CSs that facilitate communication has become important in L2 research. However, there have been some controversies about how to identify CSs, especially about data sources: conversation data, retrospective interview data, or combining two types of data. Drawing on the advantages of converged data, this study aimed to identify CSs that L2 learners use in their English communication through a convergence analysis of data. In this qualitative case study, the data were collected from Korean L2 learners' conversations and retrospective verbal reports in stimulated recall interviews. Using a data convergence approach, various CSs were identified: definition replacement CSs, message change CSs, time-gaining CSs, and comprehension CSs. This study suggests the effectiveness of CSs in handling L2 communication problems and the usefulness of data convergence in L2 CS research.

This case study examines the experiences of an African American student's successful second language acquisition in Korea. There is an increasing number of multicultural families in Korea; but few research on African American students' second language learning. In the past, some American researchers have analyzed African American students as academic underachievers for learning and there is a scarcity of research on African American students' successfully acquiring a second language. With this qualitative research design, the researchers interviewed, and observed an African American girl named Mary. The researchers also interviewed Mary's mother, teacher, and peers about Mary's Korean language development. The results of this study revealed Mary's determined efforts to become a fluent Korean speaker with support from family, community and friends. Mary underwent unique social and systematic supports for her language development. This paper concludes with the educational implication for multicultural language learners in Korea and the possibility to diminish the common stereotypes of African Americans as underachievers.

모어 판별이란 제 2 언어를 습득하는 학습자들이 생산한 목표 언어에 기반하여 학습자들의 제 1 언어를 자동적으로 확인하는 작업을 말한다. 모여 판별 과제를 성공적으로 수행하기 위한 방법을 다룬 다양한 연구들이 진행되어 왔으나, 한국어를 대상으로 진행된 모어 판별 연구는 그 수가 극히 적다. 본 연구에서는 한국어 학습자 텍스트를 대상으로 머신 러닝, 딥 러닝의 다양한 문서 분류 모델을 실험하고, 이를 통해 한국어 학습자 텍스트 모어 판별을 위해 적합한 모델을 구축하기 위해 필요한 조건을 찾아보고자 하였다.

Instructive lessons in the language classrooms are extremely constrictive to language learners in improving their English skills, thus, the use of technology in education plays an important role in a language classroom. Results of language proficiency improvement of the learners vary depending on the extent of supplementary materials offered by the internet delivered to the learners. The purpose of the present study is to explore and propose a new approach of language acquisition offered by the internet. This study presents effective methods of using the internet in carrying out the written work. In this paper, we show that the relationship between participation of the learners in the class activities and improvement of English writing skills are mutually proportional.

This study addresses the effective utilization of film music as learning material for language, target culture, and ethics education. Music is intertwined with language and culture, and even with ethics. This study focuses on the potential power of film music in the processes of teaching and learning in a classroom. For this purpose, five songs are selected from the soundtrack of Disney's famous animation The Lion King: "Circle of life", "I just can't wait to be king", "Be prepared", "Hakuna Matata", and "Can you feel the love tonight?", and concrete learning activities are suggested based on these. Using these five songs, gap-filling and singing-recoding tasks are proposed as listening and speaking activities respectively. Film music is also very useful in learning vocabulary, sentence structure, and grammar. Learners participate in a writing activity involving creating their own lyrics for the tunes reflecting their experiences. Next, for culture education, a teacher asks their students to discuss about, and be aware of, food culture using a specific character's song. Finally, for ethics education, a philosophy of life, natural logic, leadership qualities, and the motto Hakuna Matata("no worries") are explored and discussed through an analysis of the lyrics. The open-ended questionnaire survey is conducted. The result shows that music has a positive effect on culture and ethics education. Film music can be effective in learning a second language, target culture, and ethics.

외국어를 학습하는 데 있어서 해당 외국어의 의사소통 능력을 향상시키고 평가한다는 것은 상당히 큰 중요성을 가진다. 교실에서 학습자의 듣기, 말하기, 읽기, 쓰기 능력을 통해 학습자의 언어 능력을 함양하고 평가하기 위해 어떠한 연습문제나 시험 혹은 평가방법을 사용하느냐 하는 것은 학습자의 학습동기에 지대한 영향을 미친다. 왜냐하면, 보통 학습자들은 교수자가 무엇을 가르치고 기대하며 평가하느냐에 따라 자신들의 학습방법을 맞춰 나가기 때문이다. 이러한 맥락에서 본 연구는 보다 적극적인 학습자들의 참여를 유도하고 유연성 있는 학습자 중심의 학습법을 고양시키며 다양한 언어능력을 고취시키기 위하여, 효과적인 외국어 학습법의 하나로 알려진 paraphrasing을 학습에 활용하고자 한다. 특히 paraphrasing은 일상생활 속에서도 의사소통을 원활히 하기 위한 수단으로서 글 바꿔 쓰기 혹은 말 바꿔 말하기로 활용되기도 하나, 본 소논문에서는 paraphrasing이 학습을 목적으로 하는 학습현장에서 활용되었다는 것을 감안하여 의역을 통한 학습 혹은 의역학습법을 소개하고자 한다. 실제로 paraphrasing은 언어 및 외국어 학습자들에게 상당히 효과가 있는 것으로 알려진 것에 비해 실제로 한국어 교육현장에서 사용한 연구들은 거의 찾아 볼 수가 없다고 해도 과언이 아니다. 따라서, 의역학습법을 학습현장에서 도입했을 때 경험한 여러 시행착오를 바탕으로 실질적으로 교실에서 사용된 예시들을 소개하고, 한국어를 가르치는 교수자들과 한국어를 배우는 외국인 학습자들에게 paraphrasing을 사용한 새로운 한국어 교수방법과 평가 도구를 제안하고자 한다. 이를 통해, paraphrasing이 한국어를 가르치는 교수자들과 한국어를 배우고자 하는 외국 학습자들에게 효과적인 언어학습 도구로서 실질적으로 교육현장에서 널리 사용될 수 있는 계기가 되었으면 한다.

This study aims to explore efficient foreign language learning paradigm with a focus on reading fluency and accuracy. From a perspective of language acquisition in the foreign language context, the priority in the L2 learning between accuracy and fluency has been a very important issue. Fluency becomes an important issue due to many researchers' interests in the L1 and L2 classroom. Although both accuracy and fluency are crucial, the paradigm shift from fluency to accuracy is necessary in the foreign language teaching. In this context, as an alternative methodology for L2 learners' fluency, the extensive reading approach is provided. A number of studies have suggested that extensive reading program could lead to improvement of L2 learners' reading rate and is an effective approach to improving general language proficiency.

본고에서는 불어 자동처리 연구의 기초이면서, 불어 초·중급 학습에 가장 큰 걸림돌로 여겨지는 불어 굴절 변화형의 분석 및 생성 교육 시스템 Inflection-edu를 소개한다. inflection-edu는 부산대학교 언어 정보 연구실에서 개발한 불어 형태소 분석-생성기를 기반으로 하였으며, 동사 8,249개, 명사 29,059개, 형용사 9,957개와 그 굴절 변화형을 모두 분석 및 생성할 수 있으며, 학습자를 위한 굴절 규칙 231개를 포함한다. 제 2 장에는 분석과 생성을 위한 모델화(modelling) 방법론을 제시하고, 제 3 장에서는 이 결과를 불어 교육 시스템에 연동하기 위한 인터페이스를 제시하고, 제 4 장에서는 Inflection-edu의 인터페이스를 소개한다. 제 5 장에서는 남은 문제와 향후 응용 방향을 알아본다. 형태소 분석기와 생성기능이 교육 시스템에 통합된 Inflection-edu는 70년대 개발된 프로그램과 같이 단순하고 반복적인 교수-학습 작업을 제공하는 것이 아니다. 학습자의 요구에 정확하고 빠르게 피드백을 줄 수 있으며, 좀 더 큰 단위의 분석 및 생성이 가능하도록 하여, 좀 더 지능적인 언어 교육 시스템을 구현하는 것을 그 개발 목표로 하고 있다.

최근 국가적 차원에서 영어교육에 대한 많은 투자가 이루어지고 있으나 기존의 주입식, 암기식 영어 교육은 회화 실력 향상에 큰 도움을 주지 못하였다. 컴퓨터를 이용한 영어교육 또한 많은 관심을 얻고 있으나 실제 의사소통을 위한 회화 학습에 대한 고려는 깊지 않으며, 주어진 흐름의 대본을 따라 단순히 읽고 반복하는 수준의 시스템만 존재하고 있다. 이러한 학습형태는 흥미 유발 동기가 약하여 사용자로 하여금 장기간 꾸준히 학습하게 만들지 못한다는 문제가 있다. 이러한 문제점에 대하여 제2언어 습득 이론에 바탕을 둔 자연어 처리 기반 몰입 환경 영어 교육 시스템을 제안한다. 이는 도메인 확장성이 뛰어난 예제 기반 대화 시스템을 3 차원 가상공간과 결합한 시스템으로 자연스러운 대화를 통한 외국어 회화 연습을 하는 과정에서 학습자의 발화 오류를 분석하고 교육적 피드백을 제공한다. 또한 현실과 비슷한 몰입 환경에서 체험형 기술을 통해 자발적인 학습을 유도하고 집중력, 기억력을 획기적으로 높이고자 한다. 본 논문에서는 영어교육 시스템의 이론적 배경, 예제 기반 대화관리, 시스템 구성요소와 동작에 대하여 중점적으로 기술하였다.

This study explored the ESL college learners' perceptions on integrating reading and writing in the context of the reading-to-write composition classroom. Using the panel survey (N=60) that repeatedly measured the same set of individuals at three different times during a semester, this study examined whether students' perceptions on reading-writing integrations were reshaped over the course of classroom practices. The survey instrument was developed to assess the perception scores from less integrative continua to more integrative continua on a 5-point Likert scale. A two-factor ANOVA with repeated measures was performed to evaluate mean differences across the perception groups and over the three treatment times. The results do not demonstrate a significant treatment effect, suggesting that L2 learners' integrative perceptions were stable over the course of the semester. The dynamics in the perception changes differed widely across the perception groups. This result provides insights into understanding students' reading-writing practices and thus into instructional practices applicable to the classrooms. The present study argues for 12 learners' perceptions on integrating reading and writing as a key construct to understand their literacy practices involved in the composing process.
