For preparing Korean lunar missions, an Earth-Moon transfer trajectory is designed and analyzed using finite thrust. To be a more realistic scenario, kick motor's performance which is used for TLI (Trans Lunar Injection) maneuver is assumed to have a certain maximum capability. Under this assumption, optimal Earth-Moon transfer trajectory analysis is made from the beginning of Earth departure to the final lunar closest approach. As a results, optimal Earth-Moon transfer trajectory solutions with finite thrust are compared to those of designed with impulsive thrust in previous study. It is confirmed that if the trajectory solutions derived with impulsive burn is directly applied to estimate the finite burn trajectory solutions, careful consideration for finite burn losses must be paid as for TLI maneuver. Presented algorithm and various results will give numerous insights into the future Korea's Lunar missions using finite thrust engines.

Based on the planar restricted three body problem formulation, optimized trajectories for the Earth-Moon transfer are obtained. Mixed impulsive and continuous thrust are assumed to be used, respectively, during the Earth departure and Earth-Moon transfer/Moon capture phases. The continuous, dynamic trajectory optimization problem is reformulated in the form of discrete optimization problem by using the method of direct transcription and collocation, and then is solved using the nonlinear programming software. Representative results show that the shape of optimized trajectory near the Earth departure and the Moon capture phases is dependent upon the relative weight between the impulsive and the continuous thrust.

This paper presents the results of a parametric study for the design of optimal Earth-Moon transfer trajectory using mixed impulsive and continuous thrust. Various types of the optimal Earth-Moon transfer trajectories were designed by adjusting the relative weight between the impulsive and the continuous thrust, and flight time. Two very different transfer trajectories can be obtained by different combination of design parameters. Furthermore, it was found that all thus designed trajectories permit the ballistic capture by the Moon gravity. Finally, the required thrust profiles are presented and analyzed in detail.

Conventional force sensors such as piezoelectric sensor has limitations for measuring micro/nano-scale thrust. In this study we developed nano-scale measurement system using laser displacement sensor and cantilever. And electrospray microthruster was fabricated by using stainless capillary and extraction electrode, to generate nano-scale thrust. The measurement system can measure the around 90 nN thrust from this thruster. In addition, we designed and fabricated electrospray micro thruster based on PMMA(Polymethyl methacrylate), which has a nozzle protruded from the substrate.

A computational analysis of nozzle flow is conducted to investigate effects of the flight altitude on thrust performance. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equation with k-${\omega}$ SST(Shear Stress Transport) turbulence model is employed to simulate the nozzle flow in various altitude conditions, where continuum mechanics is to be valid. Thrust performance of the nozzle is exceedingly poor upto 10 km of flight altitude because of the irreversible phenomena such as shock and/or flow separation occurring inside the nozzle, whereas it is restored to the nominal value as the altitude is attained higher than 30 km.

A new concept of a small thruster for altitude control of a micro/nano class satellite is developed, which utilizes the pulsed laser energy. As the laser-based thruster does not require burning of any fuel, it gives promise of small satellite design criteria, namely light weight and cost effectiveness. In this paper, we develop gel-type material for generating strong plasma plume for enhancing thrust for propulsion. Moreover, we quantify the level of thrust via the momentum coupling coefficient measured by the pendulum system. We discover that the driving force is significantly improved via the gel-typed propellant for laser ablation.

The linear hybrid stepping motors (LHSM) has been widely used due to its simple structure and low cost control. Despite of its attractive features, the conventional LHSM has the multiples of 4th times harmonic reluctance force from excitation current and cogging force from space harmonic of permeance. This paper propose a new LHSM, which the mechanical and electrical phase difference are $45^{\circ}$. The proposed motor shows a unique ability to deliver low detent force and we propose a closed-loop control scheme to attack the ripple force for high performance applications. An analytical and experimental comparison between conventional and proposed LHSM is evaluated to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed modeling and control scheme.

In this study, AP added propellant has been proposed as a method of enhancing the low specific impulse performance found for staged hybrid rocket engine. Experimental tests were carried out to analyze and evaluate the effect of AP added propellant on specific impulse performance as well as fuel-rich combustion characteristics in a staged hybrid rocket engine. Upper limit of AP content in propellant was set to be 15 wt% to maintain the hybrid rocket engine advantages. As a result, 15 wt% AP added propellant showed 3% higher specific impulse performance compared to 0 wt% AP added propellant. Moreover, AP addition proved to offer less injected oxidizer mass flow, less O/F variation, and less combustion pressure while producing fuel-rich gas of the same combustion temperature. Future studies will carry out more combustion tests with metal additives to further enhance specific impulse.
