토양수채수기를 이용한 제주도 지하수의 함양특성 연구

  • Using lysimeter, oxygen and hydrogen isotopic compositions of soil waters were monitored at a test site of Jeju university during November 2002 to June 2003. Oxygen and hydrogen isotopic compositions of soil waters were found to reflect those of precipitation of the study area. Based on d-values, apparent residence times of about 2 and 4 months were found for infiltration of water through the soil layer to depths of 30 cm and 60cm, respectively.

Data-driven Analysis for Developing the Effective Groundwater Management System in Daejeong-Hangyeong Watershed in Jeju Island (제주도 대정-한경 유역 효율적 지하수자원 관리를 위한 자료기반 연구)

  • In this study, the impact of clustered groundwater usage facilities and the proper amount of groundwater usage in the Daejeong-Hangyeong watershed of Jeju island were evaluated based on the data-driven analysis methods. As the applied data, groundwater level data; the corresponding precipitation data; the groundwater usage amount data (Jeoji, Geumak, Seogwang, and English-education city facilities) were used. The results show that the Geumak usage facility has a large influence centering on the corresponding location; the Seogwang usage facility affects on the downstream area; the English-education usage facility has a great impact around the upstream of the location; the Jeoji usage facility shows an influence around the up- and down-streams of the location. Overall, the influence of operating the clustered groundwater usage facilities in the watershed is prolonged to approximately 5km. Additionally, the appropriate groundwater usage amount to maintain the groundwater base-level was analyzed corresponding to the precipitation. Considering the recent precipitation pattern, there is a need to limit the current amount of groundwater usage to 80%. With increasing the precipitation by 100mm, additional groundwater development of approximately 1,500m3-1,900m3 would be reasonable. All the results of the developed data-driven estimation model can be used as useful information for sustainable groundwater development in the Daejeong-Hangyeong watershed of Jeju island.

A Study on the Hydraulic Factors of Groundwater Level Fluctuation by Region in Jeju Island (제주도 지역별 지하수위 변동 요인에 대한 고찰)

  • This study evaluated the hydraulic factors contributing to the decreasing groundwater levels across Jeju island. Time-series data for groundwater level, precipitation, and groundwater usage and information on land use were acquired, and the correlations among them were analyzed to evaluate the causes of the decreasing groundwater. The effects of precipitation and groundwater usage on the fluctuations of groundwater level were quantified using response surface analysis and sensitivity analysis, and methods for groundwater quantity management by region were proposed. The results showed that the rate of groundwater decrease in the western region was larger than that in the eastern region. For the eastern region, the influence of precipitation was large and the rate of decrease in the groundwater level was relatively small. The geological formation of this part of the island and continuous seawater intrusion suggest that although the absolute amount of groundwater extracted for use was large, the decrease in the groundwater level was not seen to be great due to an increase in pressure by seawater intrusion. Overall, precipitation and groundwater usage had the greatest effect on the amount of groundwater in the western region, and thus their data would be most useful for informing groundwater management, whereas other factors (e.g., sea level and the location of the freshwater-seawater transition zone) must be considered when understanding Jeju's eastern region. As the characteristics of groundwater level fluctuations in the eastern and western regions are distinct, an optimal management plan for each region should be proposed to ensure the efficient management of groundwater quantity.

Consumption of Jeju Ground Water Containing Vanadium Components Enhances Hepatic Antioxidant Defense Systems in ob/ob Mice (비만 마우스 간의 항산화시스템에 대한 바나듐 함유 제주지하수의 증강효과)

  • The present study examined the effects of consumption of Jeju ground water containing vanadium components on oxidative stress in obese (ob/ob) mice. Intake of Jeju ground water decreased the generation of oxidative stress induced-lipid peroxidation in the liver of ob/ob mice It also enhanced the enzymatic antioxidant defense system by increasing the protein expression and activity of superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase in liver tissues. Jeju ground water intake also upregulated the intracellular content of reduced glutathione. The induction of antioxidant enzyme expression by consumption of Jeju ground water was mediated by the erythroid transcription factor NF-E2 (Nrf2). Increased nuclear expression of phospho Nrf2 was observed in ob/ob mouse liver cells following ntake of Jeju ground water. These results suggest that consumption of Jeju ground water stimulated the antioxidant defense system in the livers of ob/ob mice via induction of Nrf2.

Case for Detection and Prevention of Inflow Section for Contaminant through Annular Space in Borehole, Jeju Island (제주도 관정 공벽 내 오염물질 유입 구간 탐지 및 차단 사례)

  • Most wells developed in Jeju island before the enactment of the Groundwater Management Ordinance in 2002 are vulnerable to aquifer contamination due to inflow of upper groundwater having the high concentration of nitrate nitrogen, likely due to incomplete grouting in upper section of the wells. Although these wells require entire reinstallation, it is often necessary to rehabilitate the existing wells due to various constraints. Therefore, to identified the inflow section of contaminants, the thermal level sensor (TLS) technique was firstly applied for three wells, which enables to monitor temperature variations in every 50 cm depth. Then, the grouting material was injected to the upper section to prevent the inflow of upper contaminated groundwater into the entire aquifer. By applying TLS technique, it was found that the temperature deviations in the upper groundwater inflow section decreased sharply. Moreover, both the change in the concentration of nitrate nitrogen in the rainy/dry seasons and the average concentrations were found to decrease rapidly after grouting material injection. Consequently, the application of TLS proposed in the study turned out to be appropriate to prevent aquifer contamination.

Modification of Seawater Intrusion Vulnerability Assessment for Coastal Aquifer of Jeju Island, Korea (제주도 지하수 해수침투 취약성 평가 개선)

  • 해안 지역은 종종 도시화, 인구 증가 및 환경 오염으로 인해 해안대수층의 지하수의 염도가 증가하는 현상인 해수침투가 발생한다. 본 연구는 국내 제주도 해안대수층을 대상으로 GIS 기법을 이용한 수리지질학적 변수의 지수화 방식으로 해안대수층의 해수침투 취약성 평가를 적용하였고 국내 해수침투 특성을 더욱 명확하게 반영할 수 있도록 취약성 평가 방식을 개선하고자 하였다. 취약성 평가를 수행하기 위해 대수층 특성, 수리전도도 특성, 지하수위, 해안으로부터의 거리, 염도분포, 대수층 깊이 등의 자료를 확보하여 취약성 평가의 주요 인자로 활용하였으며 특히 다년간에 걸친 국내 해수침투 관측망 관측 자료를 사용한 것을 특징으로 한다. 취약성 평가 인자 중 지하수위를 지수화 하는 과정에서 지하수위의 평가 구간 범위를 개선하였고, 염도 적용 방식을 해수침투 관측망 데이터 유형인 전기전도도를 이용한 새로운 평가 구간 범위를 설정하였다. 연구 결과 기존에 해수침투가 발생했던 지역에서의 취약성 지수가 높게 나타났으며 취약성 평가의 개선 작업 결과에 의해 지속적인 지하수위 하강이 발생하고 계절적 요인으로 해수침투가 발생하는 지역에서 취약 지수의 증가세를 더욱 선명하게 구분할 수 있었다.

Electrical Surveys in coastal areas of the Cheju Island (제주도 해안지역의 전기비저항 탐사)

  • Electrical soundings and mappings were conducted to elucidate the geoelectrical structures of the local area of Cheju Island. The areas of the electrical surveys are coastal areas of Cheju Island, Gwagji, Sinpung-Sincheon. Generally, the geoelectrical structures of these areas are closely related with hydrogeological structures and it is very important to elucidate the geoelectrical structures for the water supply problems. Even though the results of electrical surveys in coastal areas of Cheju Island differ from place to place, there exists a general tendency of resistivity decrease with depth and the zone in the vicinity of mean sea level has low resistivity value. Also, there is good correlation between the low resistivity zone and the ground water distribution in the survey areas. A careful examination of the results of this study enabled resistivities of the rocks in Cheju Island to be divided in some categories. The resistivities of rocks unsaturated with ground water are greater than about 1000 ohm-m. The rocks saturated with fresh water have the resistivity value of about few hundreds ohm-m. Last, the rocks saturated with saline and/or brackish water have the resistivity value of about few tens ohm-m. The subsurface resistivity distribution of Cheju Island seems to be strongly dependent on the hydraulic characteristics of the rocks, and the amount and the salinity of the ground water in the rocks rather than the surface geology of the area.

Temporal and Spatial Variations of water Quality of the Coastal Saline Groundwaters in Jeju Island (제주도 염지하수 수질의 시공간적 변화)

  • We have investigated water quality of the coastal saline groundwaters utilized for fish farms in Jeju Island. The water quality investigation included the spatial observations for 75 fish farms during March-May, 1994 and the hi-monthly observations for both coastal saline groundwaters and seawaters at four fish farms from August 1994 to December 1995. Water temperature of the saline groundwaters ranged from 16 to 18$^{\circ}C$ over the study period. Salinity of the saline groundwaters varied between 20.60 ppt and 34.02 ppt, slightly lower than that of the coastal seawaters(26.47~34.53 ppt). This salinity variation must be associated with local precipitation conditions in Jeju Island. The oxygen saturation for most saline groundwater samples was lower than 80%, ranging from 24.7 to 89.8%. The COD and pH values for the saline groundwaters were similar to those for the coastal seawaters. The concentrations of DIP for the saline groundwaters varied between 0.021 mg/L and 0.121 mg/ L, and seasonal variation of DIP in the saline groundwater ranged from 0.014 to 0.077 mg/L, which were higher than that of the coastal seawaters(0.000~0.015 mg/L). Nitrate in the saline groundwaters accounted for more than 90% of the DIM. The maximum concentrations of ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and DIN in the saline groundwaters were 0.085, 0.012, 2.294 and 2.309 mg/L, respectively. These concentrations of the saline groundwaters were considerably lower than those affected culture organisms. Overall, the saline groundwaters utilized for fish farms in Jeju Island appear to maintain good waterquality for fish farms.

제주도 조간대 내 용천수에서의 조석의 영향에 관한 연구

  • 조간대내 위치한 용천수에 해양의 조석이 미치는 영향을 검토하기 위하여 제주도 북제주군 조천읍 내 4개의 용천수에 대해 장 단기 모니터링 및 현장 관측 조사를 수행하였다. 이는 만조 시 해수가 용천수의 유출구를 통해 역류하거나, 혹은 다른 경로를 통해 어느정도의 영향을 받는지를 검토하기 위한 것이었다. 조사 결과 용천수의 유출은 조석에 영향을 받고 있으나 - 용천수의 유출량은 해양의 조석에 따른 수위변화에 반비례 관계 (신흥큰물 제외) - 용천수로의 역류를 통한 영향은 없는 것으로 확인되었다. 다만, 이러한 영향에 대해 정량적인 규명을 위해서는 추가적인 엄밀한 조사가 요구된다.

Assessment of a fresh submarine groundwater discharge in eastern Jeju Island using analytic seawater intrusion models (해수침투 해석해 기반 제주 동부 담해저 지하수 유출의 정량적 산정)

  • Previous studies for the assessment of submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) were perfomed for areas where a large amount of SGD was observed. Newly developed assessment methods were proposed that was based on an analytic solution using sharp interface model. The proposed mathematical equations used the existing observed groundwater level and hydrogeological data of Jeju Island as input data. The quantitatively assessed FSGD values were compared to the basin-scale recharge estimation values in Seong-San area in eastern Jeju. As a result of the study, it was estimated that the amount of FSGD in the Seongsan area ranges from about 2.65 to 9.15% of the amount of areal-recharge. Through the analysis of the FSGD combined with the analytic model, it is to be provided as a scientific tool to establish a more reasonable coastal water resource management plan.
