  • Zeolite membranes on various supports such as filter paper, cotton fiber, and glass fiber filter were prepared by secondary growth hydrothermal synthesis. First, zeolite NaA (${\approx}0.5{\mu}m$) and silicalite-1 (${\approx}0.2{\mu}m$) crystals were synthesized as zeolite seed crystals, and they were attached to the surfaces of the supports via chemical bonding. Zeolite NaA or silicalite-1 membranes could be synthesized on the supports coated with the seed crystals. The prepared zeolite membranes were observed by scanning electron microscope and analyzed by X-ray diffraction.

  • X-ray powder diffraction study was conducted on the bulk modulus and phase transition behavior of synthetic zeolite X under high temperature and high pressure. Water and HCO3- solution were used as a PTM. Sample was heated and pressurized up to 250 ℃ and 5.18 GPa. The change of unit cell volume and phase transition were observed by X-ray diffraction. The lattice constants and unit cell volume of zeolite X, gmelinite, natrolite, and smectite were calculated using the GSAS2 program to which Le Bail's whole powder pattern decomposition (WPPD) method was applied. The bulk modulus of each zeolite X and smectite were calculated using the EosFit program to which the Birch-Murnaghan equation was applied. The bulk modulus of zeolite X is 89(3) GPa in water run, and zeolite X is 92(3) GPa in HCO3- solution run. In both run, pressure induced hydration (PIH) occurred due to the inflow of PTM into the zeolite X framework at initial pressure. Zeolite X transited to gmelinite, natrolite, and smectite in water run. Zeolite X, however, transited to smectite in HCO3- solution run. Interzeolite transformation occurred in water run, and did not occur in HCO3- solution run, which is assumed that conflict between the environment to form zeolite and the pH of the HCO3- solution.

  • To get optimum synthetic condition of zeolite A made from Kampo natural bentonite, the effects of reactant mole fraction, reaction temperature, and reaction time were studied. The source of silica was 40% -H₂SO₄ treated natural bentonite and that of alumina was synthesized NaA1O₂. The reactant was mixed at the mole ratio of SiO₂ : Al₂O₃ : Na₂O : H₂O=2 : 1 : 1 : 25 and 2 : : 1 : 37. The mixed reactants were aged at 60℃ for 1hr and reacted at 90℃, 100℃ and 120℃ for 1, 3 and 5hr. The optimum synthetic condition was SiO₂ : A1₂O₃ : Na₂O H₂O=2 : 1 : 1 : 30 at 90℃ for 3hr and the synthetic zeolite A prepared by this optimum condition showed the dehydration temperature at 79.2℃ and lattice trans-formation at 503.3℃. The wright loss of water was 5.9%.

  • Dealuminated and alkali/alkaline-earth metal exchanged Y-type and ZSM-5 zeolites were prepared as catalytic materials. Comparing with the composition of starting material, the magnitude of Si/Al ratio was increased after dealumination and cation exchange process. The ratio of Si/Al on surface was appeared to be larger than that in bulk. The destruction of basic frame in catalysts observed was understood to be due to a detachment of aluminum, which results in reducing framework while increasing non-framework. This phenomenon becomes more serious with increasing time of steam treatment and even more significant for the cation exchanged catalysts. The desorption peaks of the NO-TPD profiles taken after dealumination and cation exchanged Y-type and ZSM-5 zeolites shifted to the low temperature region. It was also found that the longer the steam treatment time, the degree of shift toward low temperature region was increased. The catalytic activities are dependent on the nature of cation exchanged, the ratio of Si/Al and the ratio of framework/non-framework by a change in basic frame.

  • Na-X and Na-A zeolites that give high adsorption capacity for heavy metals in an aqueous system were synthesized from the coal fly ash obtained from a thermoelectric power plant using a fusion method. The characteristics and Cu(II) adsorption capacity of the synthetic zeolites were also compared to those of using a commercial zeolite. For the selection of optimum conditions of zeolite synthesis, the effects of major parameters in the fusion method such as a dosage ratio of NaOH, aging time, hydrothermal reaction time, and also the dosage ratio of NaAlO2 (Na-A) on the characteristics and Cu(II) adsorption capacity of the synthetic zeolites were studied. For the analysis of characteristics of the synthetic zeolites, X-ray diffraction (XRD), cation exchange capacity (CEC), Brunaue-Emmett-Teller (BET) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used. The optimum conditions for the synthesis of zeolites with a high adsorption capacity for cationic heavy metals including Cu(II) were the aging time of 6 h, hydrothermal reaction time of 6 h and NaOH and NaAlO2 dosage ratio of 1.5 and 0.5 (Na-A), respectively. According to the Langmuir isotherm test, maximum Cu(II) adsorption capacities of the synthetic and commercial Na-X and Na-A zeolites were found to be 90.1, 105.26, 102.05, and 109.89 mg/g, respectively. This indicates that the adsorption capacity of synthetic zeolites was comparable to commercial ones. The results of this study also suggest that the coal fly ash can be potentially used as a raw material for the zeolite synthesis.

  • A and Y type zeolitic crystal films were synthesized on porous supports from the reaction mixture of 1.9 $SiO_2-1.5\;Na_2O-Al_2O_3-40\;H_2O$ and 10 $SiO_2-7\;Na_2O-Al_2O_3-280\;H_2O$ composition, respectively. The zeolite film was characterized by XRD and SEM. The crystals grown on the porous matrix were very closely bound together and the thickness of membrane was about 8-15$\mu \textrm{m}$. The densely intergrown crystals could be also synthesized by the hydrothermal treatment at $100^{\circ}C$ after pressing the reaction mixture without addition of water. A zeolite membrane crystallized as a thin film showed the selective permeability of water from water and methanol mixture through the molecular sieving activity of micropores.

  • In this work, the zeolite/diglycidylether of bisphenol A(DGEBA) systems were investigated in terms of the cure kinetics and mechanical interfacial properties of the composites. The 4, 4-diamino diphenyl methane(DDM) was used as a curing agent for epoxy. Two types of zeolite(PZ) were prepared with 15 and 35 wt% KOH treatments(15-BZ and 35-BZ, respectively) for 24 h, and their surface characteristics were studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffraction(XRD). Cure kinetics of the composites were examined in the context of differential scanning calorimetry(DSC), and mechanical interfacial properties were investigated in critical stress intensity factor($K_{IC}$) and critical strain energy release rate($G_{IC}$). In the results of XPS and XRD, sodium ion(Na) of zeolite was exchanged for potassium ion(K), resulting from the treatment of KOH. Also, $Si_{2p}/Al{2p}$ composition ratios of the treated zeolite were increased, which could be attributed to the weakening of Al-O bond in framework. Cure activation energy($E_a$) of 15-BZ composites was decreased, whereas KIC and $G_{IC}$ were increased, compared with those of the pure zeolite/DGEBA composites. It was probably accounted that the acidity of zeolite was increased by surface treatments and the cure reaction between zeolite and epoxy was influenced on the increased acidity of zeolite.

  • The objective of this study lies in identifying the applicability of zeolite for the removal of wastewater ammonium and nitrate nitrogens. To this end, the author tracked adsorption variations as seen with the adsorption removal of wastewater ammonium and nitrate nitrogens. As a result, it was indicated that the maximum adsorption of zeolite acting on the adsorption removal of ammonium nitrogen would reach 120mg/g (weight of ammonium nitrogen divided by that of zeolite), and that Langmuir adsorption isotherm explained the adsorption of ammonium and nitrate nitrogens better than Freundlich adsorption isotherm. This means that zeolite makes ion exchanges with adsorbate for unilayer adsorption. It was also indicated that the removal efficiency of ammonium nitrogen with varying pH would be higher in the order of pH7 > pH5 > pH9 > pH3.
