  • An acetaldehyde, a representative food waste odor, was decomposed using a hybrid system comprised of a non-thermal plasma and catalyst at an ambient temperature under high humidity. A five wt.% Mn was impregnated on two differently structured microporous zeolites, namely Beta and ZSM-5, with a different molar ratio of SiO2/Al2O3. Under high humidity conditions, the acetaldehyde degradation was higher in zeolites with the high ratio of SiO2/Al2O3. Among studied catalysts, a five wt.% Mn/Beta (SiO2/Al2O3 = 300) showed the highest acetaldehyde removal activity owing to its high hydrophobicity and reducibility. During long term stability test using the same catalyst for 110 hours, the acetaldehyde removal activity was relatively well-maintained.

  • In this study, zeolitic materials at $Na_2CO_3/CFA$ ratio of 0.6 - 1.8 were synthesized from coal fly ash from a thermal power plant using a fusion/hydrothermal method. The zeolitic materials were found to have cubic crystals structure and X-ray diffraction (XRD) peaks of Na-A zeolite by XRD and SEM analysis. When the zeolitic materials were synthesized from the coal fly ash, the XRD peaks of the zeolitic materials at $Na_2CO_3/CFA$ ratios of 0.9-1.8 had the same location as the XRD peaks of commercial Na-A zeolite. The XRD peaks of the Na-A zeolite ($Na_{12}Al_{12}Si_{12}O_{48}27.4H_2O$) were confirmed in the $2{\theta}$ in the range of 7.18-34.18. However, it was also confirmed that peaks of $CaCO_3$, an impurity inhibiting synthesis of Na-A zeolite from CaO and $Na_2CO_3$ in the coal fly ash, occurred in the XRD peaks of the zeolitic materials at $Na_2CO_3/CFA$ ratio of 1.5-1.8. The crystallinities of the zeolitic materials tended to increase gradually within the $Na_2CO_3/CFA$ ratio range of 0.6-1.8.

  • NaX zeolite crystals of a uniform particle size of 50 $\mu$m were grown by continuous crystallization method from seed crystals (10~20 $\mu$m) added into a 0.5~2.0 g mother liquor having a composition $3.5Na_2O : Al_2O_3: 2.1SiO_2: 1000H_2O$. In order to investigate the crystal growing by continuous method, the mother solution was supplied after 7 days, 5 days, 3 days and 1 day, respectively. The seeding resulted in an increase in the fraction of large crystals compared with unseeded batches and successfully led to an uniform NaX zeolite crystal. It was postulated that the seeding in the synthesis mixture leaded out increase of surface area for physical contact reaction and directed growth of seed crystal without the nucleation in the synthesis gel.

  • Two crystal structures of bromine sorption complexes of vacuum dehydrated Cd(ll)-exchanged zeolite A have been determined by single-crystal xray diffraction techniques in the cubic space group Pm3m at 21(1) ℃. Both crystals were ion exchanged in flowing streams of exchange solution In which mole ratio of Cd(NO3)2 and Cd(OOCCH3)B was 1:1 with a total concentration of 0.05 M. First crystal was dehydrated at 450℃ and 2 ×10-6 Torr for two days. Second crystal was dehydrated at 650℃ and 2 ×10-6 Torr for two days. Both crystals were then treated with 160 Torr for two days. Second crystal was dehydrated at 650℃ and 2 × 10-6 Torr for two days. Both crystals were then treated with 160 Torr of zeolitically dried bromine vapor at 24℃. Full-matrix least-squares refinements of toe first crystal(a: 12.250(1) A )· and the second crystal(a: 12.204(2) A ) have contecoed to final error indices, Rl:0.075 and Ra:0.079 with 212 reflections, and Rl : 0.089 and Ra = 0.078 with 128 reflections, respectively, for which I >3σ(I). Crystallographic analyses of both crystals show that six Cd2+ ions are located on two different threefold axes of unit cell associated with 6-ring oxygens. Each 4.5 Cd2+ ion is recessed ca.0. 441 A Into the large cavity to complex either with Brsor with Br3from the (111) plane of 0(3), whereas each 1.5 Cd2+ ions recessed ca. 0.678 A into we sodalite unit. Approximately 1.5 Br5-and 1.5 Br3-ions are sorbed per unit cell. Each Brsion interacts and stabilized by complexing with two Cd2+ ions and framework oxide ions, while each Br3ion interacts with one Cd2+ ion and framework oxide ions. Because of residual water molecules the following reactions may be occurred inside of zeolite cavity:

  • Hydration scheme and hydration energy are determined in ${\alpha}$ cage of zeolite NaA. The selectivity between Na(1) and Na(2) is determined from energy calculation. The waters in ${\alpha}$ cage form a distorted dodecahedral cage. The average binding energies of water(1), water(2) and water(3) are -29.847, -25.344 and -15.888 kcal/mole respectively. The positions of oxygens of hydrated waters are in good agreement with the X-ray data. The heat of immersion curve is also obtained. This result is in good agreement with the differential heat of sorption curve obtained from differential thermal analysis. It is concluded that theoretical method provides considerable uses in the determination and understanding of the hydration and interaction energy of zeolites sorbate binding.

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of manure additives mixed with probiotics and zeolite on harmful gas production generated by pig slurry. A total of 180 crossbred pigs ([Yorkshire × Land race] × Duroc, live weight 70±3.21 kg) were allotted to a completely randomized design with 3 treatments and 3 replications (20 heads per replicate). The treatments consisted of 0% (control), 0.05% (T1), or 1% (T2) of manure additives mixed with probiotics and zeolite. Manure additives were added weekly to pig slurry pits (2 m × 4.5 m × 1.2 m) on a volumetric basis. For ammonia measured at both 10 cm and 90 cm above the pig slurry pit, a statistical significance (p<0.05) was found in probiotics and zeolite-treated manure additives at weeks 1 - 3, except for week 0. In addition, hydrogen sulfide levels measured at 10 cm above the pig slurry pit were not affected by the manure additive at weeks 0 and 1, but showed a significant statistical difference at weeks 2 and 3 (p<0.05). Therefore, supplementing pig slurry with 0.05% and 0.1% manure additives mixed with probiotics and zeolite was found to be effective in reducing environmental pollution in pig facilities.

  • In this study, binderless zeolite BaX granule, an effective adsorbent for the separation of p-xylene was made. This adsorbent which has a sufficient strength, high specific surface area and selectivity to p-xylene was prepared by various steps, such as granulation process, calcination, binderless treatment, ion-exchange, and activation. In the granulation, the concentration of colloidal silica solution was controlled in order to confirm the effect of $SiO_2$ contents after binderless treatment. As a result, we confirmed that the compressive strength of granule after binderless treatment was increasing with increasing proportion of $SiO_2$ in the granule. And then Na-ion in granule was exchanged with Ba-ion by successive batch ion-exchange process. And then prepared adsorbents were tested for p-xylene separation by batch adsorption at $90^{\circ}C$. As a results of batch adsortion test, we confirmed that prepared adsorbents have a high selectivity to p-xylene. Also, it could be conformed that the prepared binderless zeolite BaX has a sufficient compressive strength (0.450 kgf), high specific surface area $(647.57m^2/g)$, high crystallinity (98.5% compared with zeolite NaX powder), and selectivity to p-xylene.

  • Dimethyl ether draws an attention as a green fuel in recent years. In this study, we investigated dehydration of methanol to produce DME using solid-acid catalysts, a series of zeolite. We found that ceria took a role of promoting the reaction conversion as well as selectivity of DME formation as a cocatalyst to the zeolite catalyst. We varied Si/Al ratio and ceria percentage on the surface of the catalyst to get high performance catalyst. ZSM5-30 with 5 wt% ceria on the surface was found to have excellent DME selectivity and to be little influenced by water content in methanol feed. We proposed a reaction model and obtained kinetic parameters for the DME formation using the catalyst based on experimental results using a microreactor.

  • In this study, we demonstrated that, although hydrogen molecules can be adsorbed onto the adsorbent such as MOF and MC itself, the loading of noble metal such as Pt is necessary to enhance the $H_2$ storage capacity since $H_2$ molecules can be dissociatively adsorbed on Pt metal and migrated to high-surface-area adsorbent via the primary spillover. In addition, the hybrid material have been prepared coupling MOF-5 with Pt/MC through carbon bridges formed by sucrose polymerization/carbonization. That this material showed the highest $H_2$ uptake at room temperature and about 100 bar is believed to be associated with the secondary spillover effect. Thus, such a strategy is very promising in developing $H_2$ storage technology using porous adsorbents. However, further experiments should be carried out to explore the choice of bridge carbon, the hybridization method, the dispersion technique of noble metals, etc.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate EPS and SMP variation of sludge and effluent in nitrification and denitrification process with zeolite addition, a possible reduction of effluent DOC by URC(Ultra Rapid Coagulation) process. As a biological wastewater treatment result, EPS formation of both aeration and anoxic sludges are not affect by SRT variation. However, EPS concentration of sludges is higher in aeration tank than in anoxic tank by 6~8 mg EPS/ g VSS. Linear relationship between SMP to DOC indicates that SMP of bulk solution contributes to most of the biological treatment effluent DOC. DOC and turbidity removal efficiency was more improved with URC process than in a conventional coagulation. For pretreatment of UF filtration DOC removal was advanced by URC process than only UF filtration.
