  • The effect of zeolite on the quality properties of fresh and broiled pork loin was investigated using 84 pigs that were fed with different feed ration of zeolite (0, 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0% zeolite) for 3 months. The pH of fresh pork loin fed with 0% and 2.0% zeolite was 5.95, which was higher than those of others (P<0.05). The cooking loss of fresh pork loin fed with 0.5% and 1.0% zeolite were 26.24% and 26.42%, respectively, which was higher than those of others (P<0.05). The dissolution crude lipid of 1.0% zeolite (3.11%) was highest, but that of 0% zeolite was lowest (P<0.05). L and a values were highest in fresh pork fed with 1.0% zeolite, however, b value was highest in fresh pork fed with 2.0% zeolite (P<0.05). In the results of L value of the broiled pork loin, the feed ration with 0% zeolite was highest (75.49) and decreased as the feed ration of zeolite increased (P<0.05). The a and b values were highest in broiled pork fed with 0.5% zeolite (P<0.05). The hardness, springiness, gumminess and chewiness of fresh and broiled pork loin fed with 2.0% zeolite were highest and increased as the feed ration of zeolite increased (P<0.05). In the result of sensory evaluation in broiled pork loin, color preference was increased as the feed ration of zeolite increased (P<0.05). Taste preference was highest in the 1.0% zeolite (10.70), followed by 2.0% (8.72), 0.5% (7.64), and 0% zeolite (6.44) (P<0.05). Flavor and appearance preferences were not significantly different between the groups. Texture preference was decreased as the feed ration of zeolite increased. The overall preference was highest in the 1.0% with zeolite (10.80), followed by 0.5% (10.04), 0% (8.41), and 2.0% (7.92) with zeolite (P<0.05). In conclusion, the optimal feed ration of zeolite for broiled pork loin was between 0.5 and 1.0% zeolite.

  • Gas permeability of low density polyethylene (LDPE) film containing zeolite powder for $CO_2,\;O_2$ and $N_2$ were investigated. Zeolite powders modified by cations or surfactant were compounded with LDPE to produce $20 wt\%$ masterbatch. After blending the masterbatch with LDPE, zeolite filled films were prepared by the blown film process. Finally, the composite films containing zeolite loadings of 0, 3,5, and $10 wt\%$ were produced. A gas permeability apparatus based on the variable volume principle was designed to analyze the characteristics of films. Experiments showed a general trend that gas permeabilities first decreased and then increased as the zeolite content was increased. Surfactant modified zeolite showed a better interfacial adhesion with the matrix, but the film did not show a discernible difference in gas permeability compared with the other modified films. The difference of temperature dependences in the gas permeabilities of composite films was slightly smaller than that of LDPE film.

  • Air is essential for human beings to survive, but urban air is polluted with soot and harmful gases, due to the increase in industrial development and the population. Thus, air pollution in large cities is of increasing interest in the research community. One of the plausible solutions to this problem is supplying sufficient oxygen to indoor spaces. The main principle of the oxygen generator is to separate oxygen from air using synthetic zeolite. Various synthetic zeolites have been applied to public indoor spaces with the focus being placed on the oxygen exchange quality. Among the characteristics of zeolites which can be applied to oxygen generators is their ability to adsorb nitrogen from the air and, in this way, generate only oxygen. Thus, we investigated the degree of nitrogen adsorption by five kinds of natural zeolite and LTA zeolite 3A, 4A, and 5A (two different sizes). Using the PSA method, the higher the degree of nitrogen adsorption, the higher the oxygen saturation concentration, it was found that the nitrogen adsorption degree of the 5A zeolite was the highest. 6% on average. It was also found that the size of the zeolite had a significant effect on the degree of nitrogen adsorption.

  • In this study, zeolite was synthesized by hydrothermal, fusion, and fusion/hydrothermal methods with fly ash, coal fly ash, and a waste catalyst discharged from thermal power plants and incinerator in Ulsan area. Coal fly ashes (CFAs) and a waste catalyst containing amounts of $SiO_2$ and $Al_2O_3$ ranging from 60.29 to 89.62 wt%. CFAs were mainly composed of quartz and mullite which were assayed by a XRD pattern. Zeolite could be synthesized by CFAs and the waste catalyst when all methods were used. Na-A zeolite (Z-C1, Z-C2, and Z-W5) are mainly synthesized by the fusion method from CFAs and the waste catalyst. Z-C1 and Z-C2 formed by-products, calcite peaks, which is caused by the content of CaO in CFAs and the addition of $Na_2CO_3$ for a synthetic process.

  • A zeolitic bentonite, which exhibits whitish appearance and contains considerable amounts (nearly 〉 5%) of zeolites, frequently occurs as thin beds less than 1 m in Yeongil area. The bentonites are mostly found in closely association with zeolite beds in the Nuldaeri Tuff and Coal-bearing formations of the Janggi Croup. A discordant occurrence of the bentonite against the bedding plane is also locally found. Montmorillonite, the major mineral constituent of the bentonite, is mostly associated with clinoptilolite as a zeolite. However, instead of clinoptilolite, mordenite is sometimes included in the case of more silicic bentonite, and heulandite in the less silicic one. It is characteristic that the mordenite is accompanied by lots of opal-CT in the silicic bentonite. SEM observations characteristically indicate that these authigenic phases, especially the montmorillonite and zeolite, nearly coexist as mixtures not forming a fine-scale zoning. The zeolitic bentonite seems to be formed in the comparatively silicic pore fluid at the alkaline condition accompanying pH fluctuation Compared to the zeolite-free normal bentonite, the zeolitic types exhibit somewhat higher REE abundance. These chemical characteristics, together with modes of occurrences and authigenic mineral associations, may suggest that the zeolitic bentonite is not merely diagenetic products and a possible hydrothermal alteration could not be excluded in the bentonite genesis.

  • Nano-sized ZnO crystals were successfully incorporated using ion exchange method in TMA-A zeolite synthesized by the hydrothermal method. The optimal composition for the synthesis of TMA-A zeolite was resulted in a solution of $Al(i-pro)_3$:2.2 TEOS:2.4 TMAOH:0.3 NaOH:200 $H_2O$. 0.3g of TMA-A zeolite and 5mol of $ZnCl_2$ solution were employed for the preparation of ZnO incorporated TMA-A zeolite. The ZnO incorporated TMA-A zeolite precursors, prepared from the process of mixing, stirring, centrifugal separation and drying, were calcined at temperatures from 400 to $600^{\circ}C$ for 3 h. The crystallization process of ZnO incorporated TMA-A zeolite was analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The Brunaur-Emett-Teller (BET) surface area of the ZnO incorporated TMA-A zeolite was measured. Subsequently, the morphology and the particle size depending on the temperature and time were observed using scanning electron microscopy(SEM), transmission electron microscopy(TEM) and particle size analyzer.

  • Recently membrane-based gas separation has attracted a great deal of research interests due to the growing demands on greener technologies. Current membrane-based gas separation is dominant by polymer membranes and limited mostly to non-condensable gases even though condensable gases such hydrocarbon isomers are much more attractive. This is primarily due to the limitations of polymer materials. Zeolites and their composites with polymer can offer alternative to current polymeric membranes owing to their superior separation and chemical/thermal properties. This review is intended to provide a brief overview on zeolite and zeolite/polymer composite membranes for gas separation applications.

  • Highly porous amorphous silica obtained from a serpentine mineral by hydrochloric acid treatment was used to produce a zeolite A through the hydrothermal reaction under atmospheric pressure. An optimum synthesis condition of the zeolite A was achieved at $80^{\circ}C$ for two hours with a mole ratio of $Na_2O/SiO_2$1.5. Additionally, it was found that a hydroxysodalite zeolite was formed under the experimental conditions over the reaction temperature of $80^{\circ}C$ and the reaction time of 120 minutes even though the crystallization of zeolite proceeds rapidly as the reaction temperature and the alkalinity becomes higher.

  • Catalytic cracking of pyrolysed waste lubricating oil over solid acid catalysts (HY zeolite, ${\beta}$-zeolite, HZSM-5) has been carried out in a micro-fixed bed system. The feed oil for catalytic activity tests has been prepared by thermal cracking of waste lubricating oil under the reaction conditions of 480$^{\circ}C$, 60 min. Optimum reaction conditions for the maximum light oil yields($\_$21/) were WHSV(weight hourly space velocity)=1 at 375$^{\circ}C$. The amounts of total and strong acid sites appeared to be the largest in ${\beta}$-zeolite as determined by NH$_3$, TPD. It is seen that the catalytic activity order, in terms of the light fuel oil ($\_$21/) production, were HY zeolite)${\beta}$-zeolite>HZSM-5. Also, coke formation followed the same order. The highest activity in HY zeolite may be attributed from the fact that it has supercages facilitating the easy diffusion of larger molecules and also the effectiveness of the acid sites for cracking within the pore. This fact could be confirmed by the coke formation characteristics.

  • Mixed-matrix carbon molecular sieve membranes containing conventional and hierarchically structured 5A were synthesized for application in oxygen (O2)/nitrogen (N2) separation. In general, incorporating 5A fillers into porous carbon matrices dramatically increased the permeability of the membrane with a marginal decrease in selectivity, resulting in very attractive O2/N2 separation performances. Hierarchical zeolite 5A, which contains both microporous and mesoporous domains, improved the separation performance further, indicating that the mesopores in the zeolite can serve as an additional path for rapid gas diffusion without sacrificing O2/N2 selectivity substantially. This facile strategy successfully and cost-effectively pushed the performance close to the Robeson upper bound. It produced high performance membranes based on Matrimid® 5218 polyimide and zeolite 5A, which are inexpensive commercial products.
