Health Monitoring of Livestock using Neck Sensor based on Machine Learning (목걸이형 센서를 이용한 머신러닝 기반 가축상태 모니터링)

  • Due to the rapid development of Internet-of-Things technology, different types of smart sensors are now devised and deployed widely. These smart sensors are now used in animal husbandry which was traditionally managed by the experience of farmers, such that wearable sensors for livestock, and the smart farm which is equipped with multiple sensors are utilized to increase the efficiency of livestock management. Herein, we consider a scheme in which the body temperature and the level of activity are measured by smart sensor which is attached to the neck of dairy cattle and the health condition is monitored based on collected data. Especially, we find that the estrous of dairy cattle which is one of most important metric in milk production, can be predicted with high precision using various machine learning techniques. By utilizing the proposed prediction scheme, estrous of cattle can be detected immediately and this can improve the efficiency of cattle management.

Effect of Semi-Dry Anaerobic Digestion Using Dairy Cattle Manure and Pig Slurry (젖소 분과 돈분 슬러리를 이용한 반 건식 혐기소화 효과)

  • Semi-dry anaerobic digestion experiment using dairy cattle manure collected from dairy cattle house was conducted to analyze efficiency of biogas production. As a first experiment, Biochemical Methane Potential (BMP) test was carried out according to certain ratio of sample mixtures: dairy cattle manure, pig slurry, and mixture of dairy cattle manure and pig slurry. The amount of methane accumulated during BMP test period was high in the experimental groups containing dairy cattle manure. As a second experiment, semi-dry anaerobic digestion experiment was carried out using only the dairy cattle manure collected from floor of the dairy cattle house. Judging from the experimental results, the optimum hydraulic retention time (HRT) of semi-dry anaerobic digestion for dairy cattle manure containing 13% of TS was 25 days. The amount biogas generated from the semi-dry anaerobic digestor with the TS of 13% of the dairy cattle manure ranged from 1.36~1.50v/v-d and the average was 1.44v/v-d. The optimum HRT of the semi-dry anaerobic digestor for dairy cattle manure containing TS of 15% and the semi-dry anaerobic digestor for dairy cattle manure containing TS of 17% was the same as 30 days. The amount biogas generated from the semi-dry anaerobic digestor with the TS of 15% of the dairy cattle manure ranged from 1.42~1.52v/v-d and the average was 1.47v/v-d. The amount biogas generated from the semi-dry anaerobic digestor with the TS of 17% of the dairy cattle manure ranged from 1.50~1.61v/v-d and the average was 1.55v/v-d.

Emission Rate of Greenhouse Gases from Bedding Materials of Cowshed Floor: Lab-scale simulation study (우사깔짚에서 발생되는 온실가스 배출량 산정: 모의 실험결과)

  • To know the emission amount of greenhouse gases from bedding materials of cowshed floor, the emission rates of methane ($CH_4$) and nitrous oxide ($N_2O$) gases from a simulated cowshed floor (SCF) with sawdust that manure loading rate into the bedding material could be accurately controlled were assessed in this study. The manure loading rates of Korean beef and Holstein dairy cattle into the SCF of $0.258m^2$ surface area with 10 to 15 cm height sawdust were $1.586kg/m^2/d$ and $3.588kg/m^2/d$, respectively, and those were calculated on the basis of "Standard model for sustainable livestock" and "Data for excretion amount of manure from livestock". All experiments were done in triplicates in three different seasons (May to July, Sep. to Nov., and Feb. to Apr.) using 12 SCFs. The effects of bedding material thickness on $CH_4$ and $N_2O$ emission from SCFs for both Korean beef cattle and Holstein dairy cattle were not statistically significant (p<0.05). Emission amount of $CH_4$ and $N_2O$ per square meter of SCF for Holstein dairy cattle was 7.5 and 1.2 times higher than that of Korean beef cattle, respectively. The yearly $CH_4$ amount per head was 17.7 times higher in Holstein dairy cattle, obtaining 130.4 g/head/year from SCF for Holstein dairy cattle and 7.4 g/head/year from SCF for Korean beef cattle, and $N_2O$ was also 3.8 times higher in Holstein dairy cattle (3,267 g/head/year in Korean beef cattle and 14,719 g/head/year in Holstein dairy cattle). However, the $N_2O$-N per loaded nitrogen into SCF was higher in Korean beef cattle, having 0.2148 and 0.1632 kg $N_2O$-N/kg N in Korean beef cattle and Holstein dairy cattle, respectively, and those values were 3.07 and 2.33 times higher than that of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 2006 guideline (GL) (0.07 kg $N_2O$-N/kg N).
