The present study has extended OpenSees, which is an open-source software framework DOS program for developing applications to idealize geotechnical and structural problems, for the static analysis of axial load capacity and settlement of single piles in MS Windows environment. The Windows version of OpenSees as improved by this study has enhanced the DOS version from a general purpose software program to a special purpose program for driven and bored pile analysis with additional features of pre-processing and post-processing and a user friendly graphical interface. The method used in the load capacity analysis is the numerical methods based on load transfer functions combined with finite elements. The use of empirical nonlinear T-z and Q-z load transfer curves to model soil-pile interaction in skin friction and end bearing, respectively, has been shown to capture the nonlinear soil-pile response under settlement due to load. Validation studies have shown the static load capacity and settlement predictions implemented in this study are in fair agreement with reference data from the static loading tests.

Shaking table tests are performed to investigate the seismic behavior of the batter pile and to bring up the countermeasures to improve the seismic performance of the batter pile. First of all, this study demonstrates how batter piles and vertical piles behave under static lateral loadings. Secondly, the vulnerability of batter plies under dynamic lateral loadings is demonstrated showing the axial forces and bending moments mobilized at the pile heads during shaking table tests. Thirdly, countermeasures to overcome the vulnerability of behavior piles during earthquakes are pursued. The countermeasures investigated in this study include introduction of a rubber element at the pile head and the deck plate connection, and introduction of hinge connection. Finally, the slope of batter piles which induces the minimum pile forces during the dynamic loadings are investigated and found to be 8:3 (Vertical to Horizontal).
In many practical cases, design methods of pile have been used mainly semi empirical bearing capacity equations. It can be done that confirmation of pile bearing capacities through using of dynamic and static tests during constructing or after constructions. If a prediction of layered point pile bearing capacity could be done through simple tests during field investigation, it could be done that more reliable design of pile than a prediction of using semi empirical equations or static formulations. This paper suggests a method to estimated point bearing capacity during in-situ investigation by using the dynamic rod model pile and verifies the point bearing capacity compare with results of static pile load tests. From test results, the unit ultimate point bearing capacities are relatively similar through a dynamic rod model pile tests and static pile load tests. The unit ultimate point bearing capacity by using N value is shown about 50 % value of measured unit ultimate point bearing capacity from field test result and the prediction of the unit ultimate point bearing capacity by using N value is shown very conservative, illogical and uneconomical pile designs.
Based on Trifuilac's empirical model to transform earthquake acceleration time history in the time domain into Fourier amplitude spectrum in the frequency domail an earthquake scaling technique for simulating the earthquake record of certain magnitude as the required magnitude earthquake was suggested. Also, using the earthquake record of magni dude(M) 5.8, the simulated earthquake of magnitude(M) 8.0 was established and its application to dynamic testing system was proposed. The earthquake scaling technique could be considered by several terms : earthquake magnitude(M), earthquake intensity(MMI), epicentral distance, recording site conditions, component direction and confidence level required by the analysis. Albo, it had an application to the various earthquake records. The simulated earthquake in this study was established by two orthogonal horizontal components of earthquake acceleration-time history. The simulated earthquake shaking could be applied to the dynamic pile load test for the model tension pile and the model compressive open -ended piles driven into the pressure chamber. In the static pile load test, behavior of two piles was very different and after model tension pile experienced 2 or 3 successive slips of the pile relative to the soil, it was failed completely. During the simulated earthquake shaking, dynamic behavior and pile capacity degradation of two piles were very different.
A new damage detection technique using static displacement data was developed, in order to assess the structural integrity of bridge structures. In conventional damage assessment techniques using dynamic response, the variation of natural frequencies is intrinsically insensitive to the damage of the bridge: thus, it is usually difficult to obtain them from the measured data. The proposed detection method enables the estimation of the stiffness reduction of bridges using the static displacement data that are measured periodically, without requiring a specific loading test. Devices such as a laser displacement sensor can be used to measure static displacement data due to the dead load of the bridge structure. In this study, structural damage was represented by the reduction in the elastic modulus of the element. The damage factor of the element was introduced to estimate the stiffness reduction of the bridge under consideration. Likewise, the proposed algorithm was verified using various numerical simulations and compared with other damage detection methods. The effects of noise and number of damaged elements on damage detection were also investigated. Results showed that the proposed algorithm efficiently detects damage on the bridge.
When a tracked vehicle travels off-road, shearing action and ground sinkage occur on the soil-track interface and severely affect tractive performance of the tracked vehicle. Especially, the ground sinkage, which is induced by vehicle's weight (hereinafter referred to as static sinkage) and longitudinal forces in the direction of travel producing slip (hereinafter referred to as slip sinkage), develops soil resistance, directly restricting the tractive performance of an off-road tracked vehicle. Thus, to assess the tractive performance of an off-road tracked vehicle, it is imperative to take both of static sinkage and slip sinkage into consideration. In this research, a series of model track experiments was conducted to investigate the slip sinkage which has not been clarified. Experiment results showed that the slip sinkage increased with increasing the slip ratio, but the increasing rate gradually decreased. Also, the slip sinkage was found to increase as relative density of soil decreased and imposed vertical load increased. From the experiment results, the normalized slip sinkage defined as slip sinkage to static sinkage calculated in the identical condition was investigated, and an empirical equation for the slip sinkage was developed in terms of slip ratio, which allows vehicle operators to predict the slip sinkage in a given soil and operating conditions.

A road curbstone is a structure installed at the boundary of the sidewalk and the street with the objectives of road drainage, drawing attention and such. The current general construction method of curbstones places foundation concrete for the curbstones first, waits until the concrete reaches the strength to support the curbstones, places the curbstones on top, and then places the gutter and rear filling concrete. Such method has the issues of poor compaction and weakened bond strength of concrete due to split placing of concrete, and causes the curbstones to easily separate due to vehicle impact or earth pressure, in turn creating maintenance costs and spoiling the aesthetics. To improve such conventional construction methods, an all-in-one method was developed using formwork rail and jig where both the curbstones and gutter can be worked at the same time, and to evaluate the structural performance, static tests of lateral loading test, pullout test, and bending test were executed, and dynamic tests such as pendulum test and actual vehicle impact test were executed. In all tests, the all-in-one construction method using formwork rail and jig was shown to be superior to the conventional construction method by the increase of construction quality and bond strength of concrete.
The behavior of laterally cyclic loaded piles is different from that of piles under monotonic loading and depends on soil and load characteristics. In this study, model pile load tests were performed using a calibration chamber to investigate the effects of load characteristics on the behavior of laterally cyclic loaded piles in sand. Results of the model tests show that the ultimate lateral load capacity of laterally cyclic loaded piles decreases linearly with increasing the number of cycles and increases slightly with increasing the magnitude of cyclic lateral loads. When the piles reach the ultimate state, the maximum bending moment developed in the piles decreases linearly with increasing the number of cycles and it occurs at a depth of 0.36 times pile embedded length for all the number of cycles. However, both the magnitude and depth of the maximum bending moment of piles in the ultimate state increase slightly as the magnitude of cyclic lateral loads increases. It is also observed that the cyclic lateral loading generates a decrease in the ultimate lateral load capacity and maximum bending moment for piles in the ultimate state. In addition, based on the model test results, a new empirical equation for the ultimate lateral load capacity of laterally cyclic loaded piles in dense sand is also proposed. A comparison between predicted and measured load capacities shows that the proposed equation reflects satisfactorily the model test results.
This study compares elastic moduli calculated using two stiffness testing methods with different strain ranges to evaluate the stress-settlement characteristics of foundation support layers. Elastic moduli were calculated by the soil stiffness gauge (SSG) in the micro-strain range and the plate load test (PLT) in the medium strain range. To apply the elastic moduli obtained by the two testing methods with different strain ranges to the design and construction of foundation soils, the correlation between each measurement value should be identified in advance. As a result of the comparative analysis of the elastic moduli calculated using the two methods in weathered soil and rock, which are representative support layers in Korea, the calculated elastic moduli differed depending on the types of soil and stress conditions. For various soil types, the static elastic modulus obtained by the PLT was reduced by 56% because of the difference in the strain level of the test compared with the dynamic elastic modulus obtained by the SSG. Therefore, the results show that it is necessary to apply corrections to the stress distribution, stress level, and dynamic effect according to the ground stiffness to effectively use the SSG instead of the PLT.

For most structural evaluation of bridge integrity, it is very important to measure the geometric profile, which is a major factor representing the global behavior of civil structures, especially bridges. In the past, because of the lack of appropriate methods to measure the deflection profile of bridges on site, the measurement of deflection has been restricted to just a few discrete points along the bridge, and the measuring points have been limited to the locations installed with displacement transducers. Thus, some methods for predicting the static deflection by using fiber optic strain sensors has been applied to simply supported bridges. In this study, a method of estimating the static deflection profile by using strains measured from suspension bridges was proposed. Based on the classical deflection theory of suspension bridges, an equation of deflection profile was derived and applied to obtain the actual deflection profile on Namhae suspension bridge. Field load tests were carried out to measure strains from FBG strain sensors attached inside the stiffening girder of the bridge. The predicted deflection profiles were compared with both precise surveying data and numerical analysis results. Thus, it is found that the equation of predicting the deflection profiles proposed in this study could be applicable to suspension bridges and the FBG strain sensors could be reliable on acquiring the strain data from bridges on site.
