Flavor Characteristics of Gondre Essential Oil Separated by the Hydrodistillation Extraction Method (Hydrodistillation Extraction 방법으로 분리한 곤드레 정유의 향기 특성)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the flavor characteristics of Gondre (Cirsium setidens Nakai) essential oil. The essential oil was isolated from the aerial parts of the plant by the hydrodistillation extraction method and analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and GC-mass spectroscopy (MS). Seventy-eight (90.28%) volatile flavor components were identified in the essential oil from Gondre harvested in May. The major compounds were hexadecanoic acid (44.84%), phytol (15.57%), 6,10,14-trimethyl-2-pentadecanone (5.62%), and tertadecanoic acid (4.77%). Seventy (90.72%) volatile flavor components were identified in the essential oil from Gondre harvested in September. The major compounds were phytol (24.18%), 6,10,14-trimethyl-2-pentadecanone (15.59%), tetracosane (8.87%), 2-methyl eicosane (3.55%), 6,10,14-trimethyl-5,9,13-pentadecatrien-2-one (3.12%), dibuthyl phthalate (2.35%), and viridiflorol (2.33%). The flavor components of the essential oil from Gondre harvested in May and September were characterized by higher proportions of aliphatic fatty acids and terpene compounds, respectively.

Effects of Organic Matter Applications on Essential Oil Contents and Composition in Anthriscus sylvestylis $H_{OFFM}$ (유기물(有機物) 시용(施用)에 따른 전호(前胡) 근(根)의 정유성분(精油成分) 변화(變化))

  • This experiment was conducted to find the most effective organic matters to improve the contents of aromatics and essential oils in root of Anthriscus sylvestylis. Growth of top part was promoted by application of chicken dung with saw dust. The contents of crude protein, fat and fiber were also increased by chicken dung with saw dust. Essential oil content was highest as 0.82% when plants were treated by chicken dung with saw dust. The optimum organic matter showing high yield was chicken dung with saw dust as 276kg per 10a. Twenty two aromatic constituents were identified from root of Anthriscus sylvestylis regardless of organic matter kinds. In particular, aromatic constituents such as sabinene and carboxaldehyde were highest at the application of chicken dung with saw dust as 16.9 and 163.4 % area, respectively.

  • The Pungent principles and Essential oil compositions of Zanthoxylum piperitum $D_E$ $C_{ANDOLIE}$(peel, barb) were analysed by HPLC and GC, respectively. Total Pungent principle contents of peels were about as 12 times as those of barks. The Sanshool I, Sanshool IV, Sanshool III and Sanshoo V were the major Pungent principles in the peels and barks. Besides, several Unknown Pungent principles were discovered in the peels and barks, too. Total Essential oil contents of peels were higher than those of barks at the ratio of 1.8 % to 0.5%. The Cineol+Limonene(37.7%) were the main Essential oil compositions in the peels, while ${\alpha}-Terpineol(16.5%)$ and Pinene(15.5%) were the major portion in the barks. The Essential oil of peels and barks were composed Pinen, Myrcene, Cineol+Limonene, Linalool, Isopulegol, Terpinen-4-ol, ${\alpha}-Terpineol$ and Piperitone. Besides, seven Unknown compositions were discovered, too.

Analyses of Lipid and Volatile Components in Juniper Seed(Juniperus rigida Sieb. et Zucc.) (노간주나무(Juniperus rigida Sieb. et Zucc.) 열매의 지질 및 향기성분 분석)

  • Juniper seed oil extracted by steam distillation has been a useful material as a medicine, insect repellant, and flavorant for alcoholic beverages. As the result of juniper seed oil analysis, the acid value, saponification value, unsaponification value phosphorus contents, and refractive index were 91.04, 85.15, 15.52, 11.04 ppm, 1.47, respectively The content of neutral lipids, glycolipids and phospholipids were 85.4%, 12.2% and 2.4%, respectively. From the fatty acids analysis, the major fatty acids from the juniperseed harvested in August were lauric acid (31.9% ), palmitic acid (28.0% ), stearic acid (9.9%), and oleic acid (8.5%) . However, maturated seed oil harvested in October mainly consists of linoleic acid (47.6%), linolenic acid (17.6%), oleic acid (16.1%), and palmitic acid (11.9%). Upon these analyses, fatty acids composition of juniper seed oil depends on the seed maturation. According to volatile compounds analyses of essential oil extracted using steam distillation method and SPME, the major compounds were $\beta$-myrcene, $\alpha$-pinene, $\beta$-farnescene, $\beta$-cubebene, limonene, trans-caryo-phyllene, $\alpha$-terpinolene, camphene, sabinene, and $\beta$-pinene.

Analysis of Volatile Flavor Components from Zanthoxylum schinifolium and Sensory Evaluation as Natural Spice (산초의 휘발성 향미성분 분석 및 향신료로서의 관능적 평가)

  • Volatile flavor components in the fruits of dried Zanthoxylum schinifolium were extracted by supercritical fluid extraction method using diethyl ether as solvent. Essential oils were analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Identification of volatile flavor components was based on the RI of GC and mass spectrum of GC-MS. A total of 30 components, including 6 hydrocarbons, 4 aldehydes, 8 alcohols, 5 esters, 4 acids and 3 miscellaneous components were identified in the essential oils. Geranyl acetate, ${\beta}$-phellandrene, D-limonene and citronellal were found to be major volatile flavor components in fruits of dried Zanthoxylum schinifolium. The masking effects of Zanthoxylum schinifolium on meaty and fishy flavor were measured by sensory evaluation to investigate the usefulness of Zanthoxylum schinifolium as a natural spice. Meaty flavor was significantly reduced with the addition of 0.05% and 0.1% Zanthoxylum schinifolium. And the addition of 0.l% powdered Zanthoxylum schinifolium also reduced the fishy flavor of mackerel.

Flavor Components of the Needle Oils from Pinus rigida Mill and Pinus densiflora Sieb & Zucc (리기다송(Pinus rigida Mill)과 적송(Pinus densiflora Sieb & Zucc)잎 정유의 향기성분)

  • The needle oils of Pious rigida Mill and Pious densiflora Sieb & Zucc were analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. The major components of Pinus rigida were ${\alpha}-pinene$, 1-hexen-3-ol formate, sabinene, ${\beta}-pinene,\;{\alpha}-terpineol$ and ${\beta}-caryophyllene,\;{\alpha}-pinene$, bornyl acetate, ${\beta}-pinene$ and ${\beta}-hpellandrene$ were the major components fo Pious densiflora. Pious densiflora had sweeter and more greenish note than Pines rigida because the bornyl acetate content of Pious densiflora was about three times more than that of Pious rigida.

Analyses of the Volatile Flavor Composition of Essential Oils from Chrysanthemum zawadskii var. latilobum Kitamura and Aster yomena Makino (구절초와 쑥부쟁이 정유의 휘발성 향기성분 분석)

  • This study investigated the volatile flavor composition of essential oils from Chrysanthemum zawadskii var. latilobum Kitamura and Aster yomena Makino. The essential oils obtained by the hydrodistillation extraction method from the aerial parts of the plants were analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and GC-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). One hundred (95.04%) volatile flavor compounds were identified in the essential oil from the C. zawadskii var. latilobum Kitamura. The major compounds were valencene (10.82%), ${\delta}$-cadinol (9.77%), hexadecanoic acid (8.70%), 2-methyl-4-(2,6,6-trimethylcyclohex-1-enyl) but-2-en-1-ol (3.67%), and 2-(2,4-hexadiynylidene)-1,6-dioxaspiro[4,4]non-3-ene (3.57%). Ninety-eight (93.83%) volatile flavor compounds were identified in the essential oil from the Aster yomena Makino. The major compounds were and 3-eicosyne (13.61%), 9,10,12-octadecatrienoic acid (7.8%), ${\alpha}$-caryophyllene alcohol (6.83%), 9-octadecynoic acid (6.03%), and ${\alpha}$-caryophyllene (5.74%). Although the two plants are apparently very similar, the chemical composition of the essential oils was significantly different in quality and quantity. In the case of C. zawadskii var. latilobum Kitamura, the sesquiterpene, valencene was found to be 10.82%, but it was not identified in A. yomena Makino. ${\delta}$-Cadinol appeared higher in C. zawadskii var. latilobum Kitamura than in A. yomena Makino. A clear characteristic of A. yomena Makino essential oil is that it has a high content of caryophyllene derivatives. The ${\alpha}$-caryophyllene alcohol contained in A. yomena Makino was relatively high at 6.83%, although the compound was not identified in C. zawadskii var. latilobum Kitamura. Also ${\alpha}$-caryophyllene was shown to be higher in A. yomena Makino than in C. zawadskii var. latilobum Kitamura.

Comparison of Volatile Compounds of Chamaecyparis obtusa Essential Oil and its Application on the Improvement of Atopic Dermatitis (추출방법에 따른 편백 정유의 향기 성분 비교 및 아토피 개선에의 응용)

  • Volatile flavor compounds of Chamaecyparis obtuse essential oil were extracted by simultaneous steam distillation extraction (SDE) and supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) and analyzed by GC-MS. A total of 48 and 50 components were identified in essential oil by SDE and SFE, respectively. Monoterpenes, oxygenated monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, oxygenated sesquiterpenes, and diterpenes in essential oil by SDE were 37.24, 10.9, 9.61, 0.22, and 0.22%, respectively. In the case of SFE, they were 19.1, 23.3, 22.66, 1.31, and 10.57%, respectively. Antioxidant activities were increased with the increase of essential oil up to $80{\mu}L/mL$, irrespective of extraction method. Especially, when the essential oil concentration extracted by SDE was increased from 20 to $80{\mu}L/mL$, the antioxidant activity was increased from 10.5 to 55.1%. However, over $80{\mu}L/mL$ of essential oil, an equilibrium state was maintained. In the case of essential oil extracted by SFE, it was decreased compared to that of SDE. For the improvement of atopic dermatitis, various cosmetics such as an ato-cide soap, ato-cide spray, and ato-cide lotion containing essential oil extracted by SFE were tested. About over 90% was useful for the improvement of atopic dermatitis after 4 weeks of clinical trial targeting 40 female adults. These results demonstrate that ato-cide soap, ato-cide spray, and ato-cide lotion containing essential oil extracted by SFE could be used in functional cosmetics.

A Clinical Study of Decrease Appetite Effects by Aromatherapy Using Foeniculum vulgare Mill(Fennel) to Female Obese Patients (여성비만환자에게 소회향(小茴香) 정유를 사용한 향기요법의 식욕억제효과에 관한 임상적 연구)

  • Objectives : This study was performed to investigate the effect of Aromatherapy using Foeniculum vulgare Mill(Fennel) for decrease in the appetite of female obese patients. Methods : We analyzed 32 obese patients who had been hospitalized in Kirin Oriental Hospital from October 1, 2004 to January 30, 2005. The patient were classified in two groups, aroma inhalation group(IH group), and non-inhalation group(NIH group). Test was applied 2 times a week(Inhalation and Non-inhalation test) for 4 weeks. The effect of both groups was analyzed by using VAS scores about appetite. The scores were checked before inhalation, and 0, 15, 30, 45, 60 minutes after inhalation. Results : The VAS appetite scores decreased more significantly in inhalation group than non-inhalation group on every checked time(15, 30, 45, 60 minutes after inhalation)(p<0.05). And VAS scores of aroma inhalation group decreased more significantly on every checked time(0, 15, 30, 45, 60 minutes after inhalation) than pre-inhalation(p<0.05), and morbid obesity group is more sensitive than obesity group shortly after the inhalation(0 minute after inhalation)(p<0.05). Conclusions : In this study, we can conclude that aromatherapy using Foeniculum vulgare Mill(Fennel) has an effect on decreasing appetite of female obese patients.

Characteristics of Flavor Reversion in Seasoning Oil using Sunflowerseed Meal (해바라기박을 이용한 향미유의 변향특성)

  • Seasoning oils(SO) were manufactured by direct fire method(DFM) and autoclaving method(AM) using sunflower seed meal. The SO manufactured by DFM is stronger than that by AM for Lovibond color and flavor strength. The flavor strength of 2 kinds SOs were lower than sesame oil as a control group. But acid value of SOs were superior than sesame oil, 0.452, 0.463 and 1.987, respectively. The level of Lovibond color for 2 kinds of sample seasoning oil was similar. Composition and contents of total volatile flavor components were determined from their essential oils of sesame oil and 2 kinds sample seasoning oils. As a result, total volatile flavor contents of sesame oil was 1,300.6 ppm, and that of seasoning oil samples were 697.8 ppm, 648.2 ppm, respectively. Major volatile flavor components of seasoning oil were 2-butanone, hexanal, methyl pyrazine etc. In contrast, major volatile flavor component of sesame oil was pyrazines, but that was not a major component of 2 kinds of sample seasoning oils.
