  • This research examined the correlation among sleep, fatigue and quality of life of stroke patients. Data regarding the quality of sleep, sleep satisfaction, fatigue and quality of life was collected from 37 stroke patients using questionnaires. The data was analyzed using Pearson correlation analysis. The results suggested that the quality of sleep is associated with sleep satisfaction and fatigue, and the level of sleep satisfaction is associated with the feelings of fatigue and quality of life. After the occurrence of stroke, most people experience insomnia and complain of physical and mental feelings of fatigue depending on the quality and level of satisfaction with sleep, as well as a decrease in the quality of life. Therefore, for the effective intervention of occupational therapy, it will be necessary to examine the sleep-related factors.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore factors influencing quality of life among cancer survivors in order to identify strategies for cancer survivors to go back to normal life and carry on stable and high quality life. This study used Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(2010-2014), conducted by Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(KCDC). The sample of this study was 610 cancer survivors and their average time since diagnosis was about 11 years. The most powerful influencing factors for quality of life among cancer survivors were activity limitation(${\beta}$=.30, p<.001), followed by age(${\beta}$=-.20, p<.001), subjective health status(${\beta}$ =-.19, p<.001), and economic status(${\beta}$=.12, p=.004). According to the result, limitation on daily activities or social activities due to physical or mental debilitation was a strong factor that lowers quality of life among cancer survivors. Hence, there is a need for manpower and infrastructure that facilitates, supports, and manage daily activities of cancer survivors.

  • When a human being grew older, followed by visually and perceptually impaired, and dementia, it jeopardizes safety and life unless supportive design is secured for a living environment. This supportive space is based on universal design concept which offers safe-oriented, and simple use by incorporating gender and physical/mental limitation. The study of purppose was to examine the appropriateness of barrier-free standard for seniors' living in apartment through IPA. Chi-square analysis found that satisfaction with BF space is lowered as aging is continued and for female group. Regression analysis indicated that sink was the prime predictor in satisfaction, and stair/elevator was the most important variable. IPA concluded that sink, bath, shower/locker and alert/egress were prime BF indexes to be improved among 14 elements, implying careful design in sanitation area for seniors.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the degree of depression in housewives and to analyze the effects of psychosocial factors on the depression. Especially the focus was on the differences in the degree of depression and the influencing factors on depression between those in early adulthood and those in middle adulthood The subjects consisted of 130 early adulthood housewives and 142 middled adulthood housewives. They asked to complete several self-report measures that were used to assess the variables of interest. The result indicated that the depression in housewives were serious enough to arouse social workers' attention. The average housewives were suffered from mild depression, and 17.1% of the housewives were in need of professional treatment. There was no significant difference in the degree of depression between the early adulthood housewives and the middle adulthood housewives. There were, however, differences in the factors which explain and predict the depression between these two groups. The results of step-wise multiple regression analysis indicated that the factors which predict the depression for the early adulthood housewives were self-esteem, conflict with the spouse, experience of painful events, age, and conflict with the children. On the other hand, the factors which predict the depression for the middle adulthood housewives were self-esteem, conflict with the spouse, job, and income. Implications of the findings for social work interventions were discussed.

  • Robinow syndrome or fetal face syndrome is a rare inherited disorder characterized by short stature, mesomelic brachymelia, hypoplastic genitalia, and a typical facial appearence ("fetal face") with frontal bossing, hypertelorism, ear abnormalities, a short upturned nose, long philtrum, micrognathia, and macrocephaly. Intraoral features have included quite a few dental cavities, crowding, hypoplastic uvula, cleft lip or/and cleft palate, gingival hyperplasia, alveolar hyperplasia, enamel hypoplasia, delayed eruption, and congenital missing of the permanent teeth. We report on a 10 years old girl with Robinow syndrome. The patient had most of the typical anomalies of the syndrome and negative family history but, in addition, had mental retardation, hearing loss, and serous otitis media. Intraoral findings included dental cavities, crowding, hypoplastic uvula, repaired cleft palate, and mouth breathing. Dental treatment and V-tube insertion(by dept. of ENT) were performed under general anesthesia. In all cases of Robinow syndrome, thorough evaluation and united treatments with medical specialists should be performed.

  • Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome(OSAS) is most frequently diagnosed in the sleep laboratories and its severity is objectively estimated. In terms of treatment, the most prevalent method is the continuous positive airway pressure(CPAP) application as of now. However, in Korea, CPAP is still not sufficiently known and it is attributable to the fact that sleep study facilities have not been popularized. In this article, the authors present their own experience with CPAP in nine subjects with OSAS. In this study, CPAP was found to decrease stage 1 sleep and to increase stage 2 sleep, with increasing mean oxygen saturation and decreasing lowest oxygen saturation during nocturnal sleep. Also, it tended to increase sleep continuity and generally to improve sleep architecture. Rebound slow wave and/or REM sleep stages during CPAP were also noted in 8 out of 9 cases. The authors suggest that CPAP should be considered as the primary mode of treatment for patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome and related educational programs for physicians should be developed and provided by sleep specialists.

  • Intolerance of Uncertainty is associated with numerous psychopathologies, including generalized anxiety disorders. However, several studies differ in the factor structures applicable for the Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale (IUS), and there exists a debate regarding the factorial and construct validity. Thus, in the current study, the IUS was newly translated to explore and verify the structures and factors relative to the cultural background of Korea. The study involved an exploratory factor analysis of randomly extracted data from 260 of 533 adults selected. Results determined that a prospective factor of 3 items and inhibitory factor of 5 items was appropriate. In addition, a confirmatory factor analysis and correlation analysis of the remaining 273 data revealed that a structural model comprising of the 8-items two factors model was well suited (x2=37.699, TLI=0.951, CFI=0.969, RMSEA=0.063, SRMR=0.039), and showed significant static correlation with worry, depression, and state-trait anxiety.

  • Objective: Many drug or non-drug therapies are reported to be effective in reducing the severity of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The aim of this study was to assess the effect of color and pattern on the severity of ADHD in young ADHD patients. Method: We randomly assigned 30 children into two groups and had them participate in 15-minute block play sessions once in a week. The experimental group used blocks with green (3G, Munsell color system) circle patterns on them, while the control group played with plain white blocks. We also provided a set of playing cards with the corresponding patterns. This trial continued for 4 weeks and 29 children (96.7%) completed. The primary outcome measurement was the ADHD rating scale-IV and was evaluated on every visit. Results: After the trial, ADHD score decreased in both groups but not significantly ($34.4{\pm}8.0$ to $30.0{\pm}4.3$; $34.0{\pm}6.0$ to $30.3{\pm}3.2$). However, there were significant differences in 4 items of ADHD rating scale between the two groups. These consisted of 3 inattention (Q3, Q7, Q15) and 1 hyperactivity-impulsivity (Q12) items and the reduction between the first and final visits was significant (p=0.0240, p=0.0498, p=0.0237 and p=0.0012 respectively). Conclusion: Repeated exposure to a green circle pattern might not influence the total score of ADHD rating scale but reduced 3 inattention items and 1 hyperactivity-impulsivity significantly in children with ADHD. Proper visual stimuli are partially helpful for pediatric ADHD.
