The standard streaming delivery Is mostly based on UDP with no end-to-end congestion control. For this reason, wide usage of multimedia applications in Internet might lead to congested networks. To avoid such a situation, studies on the congestion controlled streaming delivery has been increasingly done after the 1990s. However, by considering only the stability aspect of network, these works ignore the characteristics of multimedia streaming applications. Moreover, most of previous works have no consideration on the network delay which produces an effect on streaming service. In this thesis, in order to overcome limitations of the previous transmission schemes for streaming, we propose a new transmission scheme called 'BEST(Buffer-driven Efficient STreaming)'. The BEST takes a hybrid approach that considers both user-level requirements and network-level requriements. Therefore, the BEST improves the stability of networks by adjusting the sending rate suitable for network status and it also provides the smoothed playback by preventing buffer underflow or overflow. The BEST is designed to consider high-delay networks. Through the simulation, we prove that the BEST satisfies both user-level and network-level requirements in a high-delay network environments.

Future warfare paradigm is changing to network-centric warfare and effects-based operations. In order to find first and strike the enemy in the battlefield, friendly unit requires real-time target acquisition, intelligence collection, accurate situation assessment, and timely decision. The rapid development in advanced sensor technology and wireless networks requires a significant change in operational concepts of the battlefield surveillance. In particular, the introduction of a battlefield surveillance sensor network system is a big challenge to the ground forces which have lack of automated information collection assets. Therefore this paper proposes an ontology-based context-aware framework for the battlefield surveillance sensor network system which is needed for early finding the enemy and visualizing the battlefield in the ground force operations. Compared with the performance of existing systems, the one of the proposed framework has shown highly positive results by applying the context systems evaluation method. The framework has also proven to be satisfactory by the structured evaluation method using device collaboration. Since the proposed ontology-based context-aware framework has a lot of advantages in terms of scalability and reusability, the ground force's reconnaissance and surveillance system can be widely applied to expand in the future. And, ontology-based model has some weak points such as ontology data size, processing time, and limitation of network bandwidth. However, these problems can be resolved by customizing properly to fit the mission and characteristics of the unit. Moreover, development of the next-generation communication infrastructure can expedite the intelligent surveillance and reconnaissance service and may be expected to contribute greatly to expanding the information capacity.

Three dimensional urban models are being increasingly applied for various purposes such as city planning, telecommunication cell planning, traffic analysis, environmental monitoring and disaster management. In recent years, technologies from CAD and GIS are being merged to find optimal solutions in three dimensional modeling of urban buildings. These solutions include modeling of the interior building space as well as its exterior shape visualization. Research and development effort in this area has been performed by scientists and engineers from Computer Graphics, CAD and GIS. Computer Graphics and CAD focussed on precise and efficient visualization, where as GIS emphasized on topology and spatial analysis. Complementary research effort is required for an effective model to serve both visualization and spatial analysis purposes. This study presents an efficient way of using the CAD plans included in the building register documents to reconstruct the internal space of buildings. Topological information was built in the geospatial database and merged with the geometric information of CAD plans. as well as other attributal data from the building register. The GIS network modeling method introduced in this study is expected to enable an effective 3 dimensional spatial analysis of building interior which is developing with increasing complexity and size.

In this paper, we propose a practical hybrid transport error control scheme to provide SVC video streaming service over error-prone IP networks. Many error control mechanisms for various video coding standards have been proposed in the literature. However, there is little research result which can be practically applicable to the multilayered coding structure of SVC(the scalable extension of H.264/AVC). We present a new hybrid transport error control scheme that efficiently combines layered Forward Error Correction(FEC) and Automatic Repeat Request(ARQ) for better packet-loss resilience. In the proposed hybrid error control, we adopt ACK-based ARQ instead of NACK-based ARQ to maximize throughput which is the amount of effective data packets delivered over a physical link per time unit. In order to prove the effectiveness of the proposed hybrid error control scheme, we adopt NIST-Net network emulator which is a general-purpose tool for emulating performance dynamics in IP networks. It is shown by simulations over the NIST-Net that the proposed hybrid error control scheme shows improved packet-loss resilience even with much less number of overhead packets compared to various conventional error control schemes.
In this paper, We analysis of effective coverage extension for Tri-sector cellular systems using Multi-hop Relay based on IEEE802.16j system. In the proposed international standard of IEEE 802.16j MMR (Mobile Multi-hop Relay) use of the omni-directional antenna, 3-sector and 6-sector antenna is considered to Base Station and Relay Station. Omni-directional antenna service can offer as all directions but a throughput decreases due to the signal interference of near Relay Stations. In the directional antenna, cause of an interference with the base station which it arranges an antenna so that a beam can have the direct and does with neighbor Base Station and Relay Station can be reduced interference, therefore the effective throughput is higher than the omni-directional antenna system. But, In case of Base Station and Relay Station use the directional antenna, the efficiency which the directional antenna has the Co-channel interference due to in the different cell by the channel reuse is decreased. In this study, we propose the structure of arranging the Base Station and Relay Station having the directional antenna in the NBTC, WBTC antenna in a multi-tier. It compared and analyzed with the mode that the multi-hop Relay Station has the omni-directional antenna, Relay Station are used the NBTC antenna and the WBTC antenna system also, We analyze a relation between the performance degradation and the cell coverage extension which it follows because the number of hop in the multi-hop Relay Station.
Retransmissions on the DLC layer are essential to ABR service providing the low CLR (cell loss ratio) over the unreliable wireless channel with high bit error rate. In the wireless ATM, the DLC layer below ATM layer performs the retransmission and reordering of the cells to recover the cell loss over the wireless channel and by doing so, the effect of the wireless channel characteristics with high bit error rate can be minimized on the ATM layer which is designed under the assumption of the low bit error rate. We propose, in this paper, the schemes to reflect the changes of the transmission rate over the wireless channel on the ABR rate control. Proposed scheme can control the source rate to the changes of the transmission rate over the wireless channel and reduce the required buffer size in the AP (access point). In the simulation, we assume that the DLC layer can inform the ATM layer of the wireless channel quality as good or bad. Our simulation results show that the proposed schemes require the smaller buffer size compared with the existing scheme, enhanced dynamic max rate control algorithm (EDMRCA). It is also shown that the scheme with the intelligent DLC which adjusts the rate to the wireless channel quality not only provides the low CLR with smaller buffer requirement but also improves the throughput by utilizing the wireless bandwidth more efficiently.
A broadband access network in B-ISDN subscriber network, plays a role of concentration or multiplexing of various subscribers into a service node. For call and connection control functions, DSS2 and B-ISUP signalling protocols are standardized for each of a subscriber side and a network node. B-BCC and B-ANCC protocol were proposed for VB5.2 interface. This interface allows dynamic control of ATM connections at the broadband access network. To establish an end-to-end ATM connection, interworking functions between VB5.2 interface's connection control protocol and the signalling protocol, are performed at the service node. A sequential interworking model and a parallel interworking model were proposed for these interworking functions. The sequential interworking model recommended by ITU-T causes an overall connection setup delay by introducing the access network, because this model proceeds the signalling protocol of network node after the response of VB5.2 interface protocol. On the other hand, the parallel interworking model proceeds the signalling protocol and the VB5.2 interface protocol simultaneously. The simultaneity of the parallel interworking model minimizes the overall connection setup delay. In this paper, we analyze and simulate above two interworking models with B-BCC or B-ANCC protocol in terms of a connection setup delay and completion ratio.
As the research on home network technologies, sensor network technologies, and ubiquitous network technologies makes rapid progresses, wireless ad-hoc network have attracted a lot of attention. A wireless mobile ad-hoc network is a temporary network formed by a collection of wireless mobile nodes without the aid of any existing network infrastructure or centralized administration, and it is suitable for ubiquitous computing environments. In this paper, we suggest an extension scheme of a wireless mobile ad-hoc network based on limited multiple paths source routing protocol. This scheme reduces the overhead of route re-establishment and re-registration by maintaining link/node non-disjoint multiple paths between mobile hosts in a wireless mobile ad-hoc network or a mobile host in a wireless mobile ad-hoc network and a base station supporting fixed network services. By maintaining multiple paths, our scheme provides short end-to-end delay and is reliable extension scheme of a wireless mobile ad-hoc network to a fixed network. In this paper, our simulations show that our scheme outperforms existing schemes with regards to throughput and end-to-end delay. Also we show that our scheme outperforms multi-paths approach using disjoint routes with regards to routing overhead.
To support the mobility, mobile computers are generally equipped with lower capability than desktop PCs or workstations in terms of the size of a display, the processing power of CPU and so on. This may give a rise to limitation in mobile computers of supporting multimedia services such as World Wide Web which users would otherwise fully enjoy in desktop PCs. Approaches to reducing the limitations are distillating original multimedia data or converting them to text. Conventional proxy servers for mobile computer simply send distillated image files with the fixed size regardless of the display size of a target mobile computer. Since the cached data is kept separately for each user, they cannot be shared among users with the same display configuration and thus the proxy server could be overloaded. In this paper, we first classify various mobile computers based on their display capability in terms of display sizes and colors. We propose an enhanced proxy server called Class-based proxy that provides a mobile computer with distillated image files in proportion to its class display capacity. The proposed proxy server allows a mobile computer user to have a homepage view similar to that in PC or Workstation. Mobile computers with the same class share the cached image files, which are distillated appropriately for that class. This helps the proxy server to get higher cache hit ratio with improved efficiency and scalability.
In hierarchical Mobile IPv4 Networks the highest FA(Foreign Agent) may experience serious congestion and delay since the highest FA plays a role of CoA(Care of Address) for all mobile nodes in the domain, In this paper, we propose mechanism called 'HRFA(Hierarchical Root Foreign Agent)', which distributes the load imposed on the highest FA. In the proposed HRFA scheme, multiple HRFAs are selected to provide the similar service that is provided by the highest FA. According to which entity determines HRFAs, HRFA scheme is categorized into 'Active' and 'Passive' approaches. HRFA scheme is further categorized into 'All MN(Mobile Node)s' and 'New MNs' approaches, depending on which mobile nodes are assigned to a newly elected HRFA. Through a course of simulations, we investigate the performance of 4 possible combinations of HRFA schemes. We also compare the performance of the proposed HRFA schemes with the LMSP(Local Multicast Service Provider) scheme, which is a scheme to distribute the load of FA for multicast service in hierarchical wireless network domain. The simulation results show that the Passive & New MN approach performs best with respect to both the overhead and the load balancing.
