  • We estimated the spectrum decay parameter $\chi$ and the stress parameter ($\Delta$$\sigma$) in southeastern Korea. Especially, we propose a procedure to compute site-independent $\chi$$_{q}$ and dependent $\chi$$_{s}$ values, separately, This procedure is to use the coda normalization method for the computation of site independent Q or corresponding $\chi$$_{q}$ value as the first step followed by the next step, the computation of $\chi$$_{s}$ values for each site using the given $\chi$$_{q}$ value evaluated at the first step, For the estimation of stress parameter, we used seismic data monitored from three earthquakes occurred near Gyeongju in 1999 with the method of Jo and Baag, In addition, we simulated strong ground motion using the $\chi$ value and the stress parameter, In this case, we calculated the $\chi$ value with conventional method. The $\chi$ value of 0.016+0.000157R and the stress parameter of 92-bar was applied to the stochastic simulation, At last, we derived seismic attenuation equation using results of the stochastic prediction, and compared these results with some others reported previously.ported previously.

  • Material Life Cycle Assessment (MLCA) was performed to analyze the environmental impact characteristics of the Mg2NiHx-5 wt% CaO hydrogen storage composites' manufacturing process. The MLCA was carried out by Gabi software. It was based on Eco-Indicator 99' (EI99) and CML 2001 methodology. The Mg2NiHx-5 wt% CaO composites were synthesized by Hydrogen Induced Mechanical Alloying (HIMA). The metallurgical, thermochemical characteristics of the composites were analyzed by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), specific surface area analysis (Bruner-Emmett-Teller, BET), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). As a result of the CML 2001 methodology, the environmental impact was 78% for Global Warming Potential (GWP) and 22% for Eutrophication Potential (ETP). In addition, as a result of applying the EI 99' methodology, the acidification was the highest at 43%, and the ecotoxicity was 31%. Accordingly, the amount of electricity used in the manufacturing process may have an absolute effect on environmental pollution. Also, it is judged that the leading cause of Mg2NiHx-5 wt% CaO is the addition of CaO. Ultimately, it is necessary to research environmental factors by optimizing the process, shortening the manufacturing process time, and exploring eco-friendly alternative materials.

  • The site effect for 23 broadband seismic stations in the southern Korean Peninsula was estimated by using the spectral ratio of coda waves. In principle, the site effect means the pure amplification below the station excluding effects of seismic source and attenuation in the wave transmission. However, the site effect determined in this study is equivalent with the relative site amplification factor to the mean amplification for all stations. A total of 500 three-component seismograms from 35 earthquakes, of which magnitude ranged from 2.5 to 5.1 occurred from January, 2001 to January, 2007 was used to obtain the site amplification factor. The site amplification factors were estimated for the frequency bands centered at 0.2, 0.5, 1, 2, 5, 10, 15, and 20 Hz. It was found that the factors for two horizontal components of transverse and radial records were concordant with each other in the all frequency bands. However, the factor for the vertical component was found to be systematically lower than those for two horizontal components. The factors obtained in the low frequency band below 2 Hz ranged from 0.5 to 1.5 in all seismic stations except for KMA and KIGAM stations in Bagryeongdo (BRD1 and BRD2) of which factor showed high value above 1.5. Some stations such as SEO, SNU, HKU, NPR, and GKPI showed high value above 1.5 in the high frequency band from 5 to 20 Hz. Especially, the factors of GKP1 station represented extremely high value ranging from 1.8 to 7.8. Also, the factors for stations of KWJ, SND, and ULJ showed low value below 0.5. The spatial distribution for the relative amplification factor represented a tendency of being approximately lower in north-eastern area than south-western area in the southern Korean Peninsula.
