  • Soil failure is initiated and preceded by forming and progressing of shear band, defined as the localization of deformation into thin zones of soil mass. To understand the failure mechanism of normally consolidated cohesive soil, the spatial distribution and evolution of deformation within the entire specimen need to be evaluated. In this study, vertical compression tests under plane strain condition were performed on reconstituted kaolinite specimens, while capturing digital images of the specimen at regular intervals during shearing. Overall stress-strain behavior from initial to post peak has been analyzed together with spatial distributions of deformations and shear band characteristics from digital images at 4 stages.

  • In the correlation formulas related to consolidation proposed at present, the analyzed areas are limited to certain overseas or domestic areas and in order to increase the number of data, experimental data of different areas are integrated and therefore in many cases application is difficult. In addition, models have been developed without clear statistic evaluation of the obtained data. Accordingly, this study divided the soft areas of the west coast into Hangang, Kumgang and Yeongsangang in order to maximally reduce uncertainty of the experimental data and performed normality test and regression analysis on the physical and dynamic characteristics. According to the analysis result, the compression index and the modified compression index had strong linearity and in all areas modified compression index and initial void ratio had closest correlation, followed by total unit weight, water contents and liquid limits. As for overconsolidation ratio with depth, the width of overconsolidation ratio was large when the depth was less than 5 to 6 m in all areas and when the depth was over 5 to 6 m, the ratio was constant.

  • This study presented a new method for evaluating the coefficient of consolidation by using inflection point method which was based on the fact that time factor, T corresponding to the inflection point of a semi-logarithmic plot of a time curve is fixed and equals to T = 0.405 at 70.03% consolidation. In the proposed method, as the next load increment is applied as soon as the inflection point is confirmed, the time required to identify the inflection point can be shortened. Thus, the coefficient of consolidation may be easily evaluated. The time required to complete the testing using this rapid consolidation method could be as low as 0.5~9 hours compared with 1 or 2 weeks in the case of the conventional consolidation test. For this study, we designed settlement equipment for normalization of test samples. In test results, the factors of consolidation agreed with undisturbed samples results.

  • Dredged soil experiences large settlement during consolidation because of its high water contents. Large settlement alters the thickness of the consolidation layer greatly with time. However, the consolidation theory proposed by Terzaghi assumes the thickness of the consolidation layer to stay constant. Mikasa has developed a more rational theory considering the change of thickness of consolidation layer but it is not well applied at the site. In this study consolidation tests have been performed using Rowe cell for the four dredged clay samples with a water content of 100%, 120%, 133% and 150%. From the test results compression index characteristics and coefficient of consolidation characteristics have been investigated. Coefficients of consolidation obtained by Terzaghi's and Mikasa's theories, have been evaluated and compared with each other. When Mikasa theory is applied in the field design, the period to reach the required degree of consolidation has been reduced compared with the result by Terzaghi theory because the time factor $T_{v}$ by Mikasa theory decreases with increasing of final strain of consolidation layer, Calculation method consolidation time by Mikasa theory was concisely explained for its practical use.e.

  • In this study, a series of flat dilatometer tests are performed for Busan sand reconstituted in a large calibration chamber to evaluate the state parameter ($\Psi$). Experimental result shows that the horizontal amplification factor ($K_D/K_0$) is linearly related with state parameter in semi-logarithmic space, but the $K_D/K_0$ of OC specimen is smaller than that of NC specimen because of the horizontal residual stress by stress history of OC specimen. The relation between the normalized dilatometer modulus ($E_D/\sigma_m'$) and the state parameter is also linearly expressed in semi-logarithmic space, and the effect of stress history is relatively insignificant in this relation. However, the variation in $E_D/\sigma_m'-\Psi$ relation of NC state is slightly higher than that of OC state due to the effect of the stress level, and the correlation curve is descending with increase of confining stress. The comparison of test result with previous results of Ticino and Toyoura sands shows that the $E_D/\sigma_m'-\Psi$ relation of Toyoura sand is located on upper side than that of Busan and Tieino sands due to the effect of the higher compressibility, whereas the $K_D/K_0-\Psi$ relation of each sand is irregularly distributed.

  • The relation constant method between OCR and normalized net cone tip resistance has been widely used to estimate OCR value in practice. In this study, the method was analyzed for the soft soils in the Bukmyun area in Changwon city and the northwestern area in Incheon city. The relation constant value was estimated in the range of 0.28~0.33 for the Bukmyun area in Changwon city and 0.49~0.6 for the northwestern area in Incheon city. The value was max. 90% larger than it from the foreign previous studies. This is not the conservative result so the previous methods should be used with great caution of determining the constant value.

  • In this study, the single hardening model with stress history-dependent plastic potential, which has been most recently proposed based on the critical state soil mechanics and needs few model parameters, was verified for the normally, lightly, and heavily over-consolidated clayey specimens. The triaxial compression tests were strictly conducted. The predictions using the single hardening model generally agree with the measurement. The discrepancy exists on its main focusing on the principal stress rotation; however, the plastic work H and the principal stress rotation angle ${\beta}$ are found to be effective indicators of loading history for the plastic potential function of the stress path dependent materials.

  • In this study, the rate-sensitive constitutive model, which was developed in the previous paper of this journal, was validated using the experimental results obtained from the well-calibrated triaxial compression test conducted with the Boston blue clay. The validation was performed for the various cases of the strain rate of 0.05%/hr, 0.5%/hr, 5.0%/hr and OCR of 1, 2, 4, 8. The developed model was validated for the normally and slightly overconsolidated cases; however, the cases of heavily overconsolidation needs further research.

  • Dredged soil from sea has much higher water content than liquid limit of clay and even if small loads apply, it will suffer a great settlement. Therefore it is very difficult to perform a consolidation test with general consolidation apparatus because of high water content. In this study Rowe cell apparatus consolidation tests have been performed with 5 slurry clays of a water content of 100%, 110%, 120%, 133%, and 150%. From the test results the consolidation characteristics such as compression index, secondary compression index, consolidation coefficient, and strain have been investigated with a variation of water content of dredged soil. The equations to get consolidation constants such as a compression index, a coefficient of consolidation, and strain have been proposed with the field water content.

  • Consolidation of dredged fill has become important task for site treatment. The variation of stratum thickness during consolidation processing needs to be taken into consideration since hydraulic fill would go through a much larger scale strain than land soil when it is subject to a load. In this study, the consolidation period considering the variation of stratum thickness was analyzed and compared the results with those of existing consolidation studies which did not consider the variation of stratum thickness. According to the results of the study, the consolidation period of the ground with a larger strain was calculated more close to observed value in case of Mikasa theory which takes the variation of stratum thickness into consideration.
