  • In order to reduce the increasing packet loss rates caused by an exponential increase in network traffic, the IETF(Internet Engineering Task Force) is considering the deployment of active queue management techniques such as RED(Random Early Detection) algorithm. However, RED algorithm simple but does not protect traffic from high-bandwidth flows, which include not only flows that fail to use end-to-end congestion control such as UDP flow, but also short round-trip time TCP flows. In this paper, in order to solve this problem, we propose a simple fairness queue management scheme, called AFQM(Approximate Fair Queue Management) algorithm, that discriminate against the flows which submit more packets/sec than is allowed by their fair share. By doing this, the scheme aims to approximate the fair queueing policy Since it is a small overhead and easy to implement, AFQM algorithm controls unresponsive or misbehaving flows with a minimum overhead.

  • HTTP Adaptive Streaming (HAS) is a technique that adapts its video quality to network conditions for providing Quality of Experience. In the HAS approach, a video content is encoded at multiple bitrates and the encoded video content is divided into several video segments. A HAS player estimates the network bandwidth and adjusts the video bitrate based on estimated bandwidth. However, the segment scheduler in the conventional HAS player requests video segments periodically without considering TCP. If the waiting duration for the next segment request is quite long, the TCP connection can be initialized and it restarts slow-start. Slow-start causes the reduction in TCP throughput and consequentially leads to low-quality video streaming. In this study, we propose a TCP-aware segment scheduling scheme to improve performance of HAS service. The proposed scheme adjusts request time for the next video request to prevent initialization of TCP connection and also considers the point of scheduling time. The simulation proves that our scheme improves the Quality of Service of the HAS service without buffer underflow issue.

  • Due to the prevalence of various mobile devices and wireless broadband networks, there has been a significant increase in interest and demand for multimedia streaming services. Moreover, the user can service the participatory video broadcasting service in the mobile device and it can be used to deliver the real-time news and more variety information in the user side. Live multimedia service of user participation should consider not only the video quality but also the delay bounds and continuity of video playback for improving the user perceived QoS (Quality of Service) of streaming service. In this paper, we propose an adaptive rate control scheme, called DeBuG (Delay Bounds Guaranteed), to guarantee the delay bounds and continuity of video playback for the real-time streaming in mobile devices. In order to provide those, the proposed scheme has a quality adaptation function based on the transmission buffer status and network status awareness. It also has a selective frame dropper, which is based on the media priority, before the transmission video frames. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed scheme.

  • The sensor nodes can be installed in the environment in which the temperature change is considerable, such as desert, urban, and data center. Particularly, because the output power becomes less than the targeted power if a temperature is increasing, link quality is degraded and packet losses are occurred. In order to compensate the temperature changes, existing schemes detect the change of the link quality between nodes and control transmission power through a series of feedback process. However, these approaches can cause heavy overhead by additional control packets. In this paper, we propose the T2PC(Temperature-aware Transmission Power Control) to keep up the link quality despite temperature variation. At each node, T2PC compensates the attenuated link quality by controlling the transmission power based on the local temperature measurement. In addition, the packet reception ratio can be improved with less control packets than ones required in existing transmission power control methods based on the feedback control.

  • Characteristics of biological data including genome sequences are heterogeneous and various. Although the need of management systems for genome sequencing which should reflect biological characteristics has been raised, most current biological databases provide restricted function as repositories for biological data. Therefore, this paper describes a management system of nucleotide sequences at the level of biological laboratories. It includes format transformation, editing, storing and retrieval for collected nucleotide sequences from public databases, and handles sequence produced by experiments. It uses BSML based on XML as a common format in order to extract data fields and transfer heterogeneous sequence formats. To manage sequences and their changes, version management system for originated DNA is required so as to detect transformed new sequencing appearance and trigger database update. Our experimental results show that applying active trigger rules to manage changes of sequences can automatically store changes of sequences into databases.

  • In order to reduce the increasing packet loss rates caused by an exponential increase in network traffic, the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) is considering the deployment of active queue management techniques such as RED (Random Early Detection). While active queue management in routers and gateways can potentially reduce packet loss rates in the Internet, this paper has demonstrated the inherent weakness of current techniques and shows that they are ineffective in preventing high loss rates. The inherent problem with these queue management algorithms is that they all use static parameter setting. So, in case where these parameters do not match the requirement of the network load, the performance of these algorithms can approach that of a traditional Drop-tail. In this paper, in order to solve this problem, a new active queue management algorithm called ARED (Active RED) is proposed. ARED computes the parameter based on our heuristic method. This algorithm can effectively reduce packet loss while maintaining high link utilizations.

  • This paper presents three multiprocess models for parallel protocol implementation, that is, (1)channel communication model, (2)fork-join model, and (3)event polling model. For the specification of parallelism for each model, a parallel programming language, Par. C System, is used. to measure the performance of multiprocess models, we implemented the Internet Protocol Suite(IPS) Internet Protocol (IP) for each model by writing the parallel language on the Transputer. After decomposing the IP functions into two parts, that is, the sending side and the receiving side, the parallelism in both sides is exploited in the form of Multiple Instruction Single Data (MISD). Three models are evaluated and compared on the basis of various run-time overheads, such as an event sending via channels in the parallel channel communication model, process creating in the fork-join model and context switching in the event polling model, at the sending side and the receiving side. The event polling model has lower processing delays as about 77% and 9% in comparison with the channel communication model and the fork-join model at the sending side, respectively. At the receiving side, the fork-join model has lower processing delays as about 55% and 107% in comparison with the channel communication model and the event polling model, respectively.

  • Recently, the web-based adaptive streaming service, DASH (Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP), is receiving more attention. However, existing network-based and buffer-based video quality control schemes in DASH environments make oscillation of segment throughput, causing degradation of the quality of experience (QoE) with frequent quality changes and playback interruptions because these schemes do not consider the content characteristics. In this paper, we propose a C-DASH (Content Characteristics based Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP) scheme in order to improve the QoE in DASH environments. The C-DASH scheme performs seamless and smooth quality control based on the segment throughput, buffer status, and segment size of the content. Based on simulation results, it is confirmed that the C-DASH scheme can improve the QoE, when compared with the existing quality control schemes.

  • These days, the networks have exhibited HBDP (High Bandwidth Delay Product) characteristics. The legacy TCP slowly increases the size of the congestion window and drastically decreases the size of a congestion window. The legacy TCP has been found to be unsuitable for HBDP networks. TCP mechanisms for solving the problems of the legacy TCP can be categorized into the loss-based TCP and the delay-based TCP. Most of the TCP mechanisms use the standard slow start phase, which leads to a heavy packet loss event caused by the overshoot. Also, in the case of congestion avoidance, the loss-based TCP has shown problems of wastage in terms of the bandwidth and RTT (Round Trip Time) fairness. The delay-based TCP has shown a slow increase in speed and low occupancy of the bandwidth. In this paper, we propose a new scheme for improving the over shoot, increasing the speed of the bandwidth and overcoming the bandwidth occupancy and RTT fairness issues. By monitoring the buffer condition in the bottleneck link, the proposed scheme does congestion control and solves problems of slow start and congestion avoidance. By evaluating performance, we prove that our proposed scheme offers better performance in HBDP networks compared to the previous TCP mechanisms.

  • This study aims to suggest a methodology of localizing and calibrating parameters, such as acceleration, deceleration, and lane changing which are the basis of car following model in interrupted traffic flow to overcome the limitation of origin and destination based transportation simulation and to verify the application of activity-based model for use in Korean roadway condition in a large scale area or a city. Especially, we figured out that a proper cell size reflecting Korean traffic conditions is 1.0m rather than 7.5m which is default size and a methodology of tracking vehicle behavior characteristics through tracking vehicle ID is suggested on this study. In addition, vehicle running characteristics in real interrupted traffic flow is analyzed through subdividing vehicle types and updating vehicle type ratio. For verification of suggested model, some portion of Dalgubyul-ro in the Daegu city is tested, and the possibility of realization of interrupted traffic flow in simulation is studied.
