  • A new contact force estimation technique is proposed. Keeping the contact force at a certain level between finishing tool and the object is essential since the quality of the finished surface is very sensitive to the contact force during the finishing process. However, the contact force measurement cannot be obtained by simply installing load cells under machine table or in the middle of tool linkage. The reason is that the weight of the machine table and the tool linkage are much heavier than the force to be measured. To that end, a method for estimating disturbance is proposed for a system that is similar to the mechanism of the finishing machine, and the same method is applied to estimate the contact force of the brush-type finishing machine. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, a small scale test set-up has been built and the method has been tested.

  • Two promising control candidates have been selected to test the sinusoidal reference tracking performance for a brush-type polishing machine having strong nonlinearities and disturbances. The controlled target system is an oscillating mechanism consisting of a common positioning stage of one degree-of-freedom with a screw and a ball nut driven by a servo motor those can be obtained commercially. Beside the strong nonlinearity such as stick-slip friction, the periodic contact of the polishing brush and the work piece adds an external disturbance. Selected control candidates are a Sliding Mode Control (SMC) and a variant of a feedback linearization control called Smooth Robust Nonlinear Control (SRNC). A SMC and SRNC are selected since they have good theoretical backgrounds, are suitable to be implemented in a digital environment and show good disturbance and modeling uncertainty rejection performance. It should be also noted that SRNC has a nobel approach in that it uses the position information to compensate the stickslip friction. For both controllers analytical and experimental studies have been conducted to show control design approaches and to compare the performance against the strong nonlinearity and the disturbances.

  • he rolling contact behaviors between a smooth ball and a flat rough surface under dynamic load are intricately affected by many factors, such as the diameter of a ball, normal load and the roughness of a flat surface etc. Accordingly, the experimental study is done to find them on the base of elastic hysteresis loss as theoretical approach is very difficult. The experimental apparatus composed of damped-free vibration system is used. This paper investigates the damping characteristics on the rolling contact area through rolling friction force and logarithmic decrement versus displacement obtained in accordance with the variations of those factors, and presents a new experimental method to find out contact width using the relations of logarithmic decrement and rolling friction force with displacement.

  • In this study, we attempted to reduce the generation of waste acids in the electropolishing process by improving the current efficiency. The optimum conditions of the electropolishing process when using the round bus bar were determined by the Taguchi method. The current density, polishing time, electrolyte temperature and flow rate were selected as the control factors for the current efficiency in the electropolishing process. An orthogonal array was created by considering three levels for each factor and experiments were carried out. The larger-the-better SN ratios were calculated by the Taguchi method. The current density was the most important factor affecting the current efficiency and the polishing time was the least important one. The optimum conditions to minimize the generation of waste acids were a current density of $45A/dm^2$, polishing time of 4 min, electrolyte temperature of $65^{\circ}C$ and flow rate of 7 L/min. The results of the ANOVA confirmed that the effects of the current density, electrolyte temperature and flow rate are significant at the 95% confidence level. The increase in the contact area and contact force afforded by using the round bus bar improved the current efficiency which, in turn, reduced the amount of waste acids generated. Further research is planned to investigate the effect of the type of bus bar on the current efficiency.

  • This study proposes the algorithm which drives the powerless without battery. The exiting wire or RF type dosimeter, which is the computation of the real time with battery on the dose radiation exposure, In the Wired dosimeter, it is trouble to need the maintenance and management by periods. Besides, the case of the RF typed dosimeter with battery, it is requested to size bigger and to replace battery frequently and so on. Especially RF typed dosimeter has trouble to need for the embody with large power consumption on the contactless typed dosimeter. As the method for the low power, the study designed to be down the operating clock of the MPC, to improve the efficiency of the rectifier, to eliminate the external memory and the DC-DC converter for the simplification of the circuit We convince our research contributes not only to understand the simplified circuit and miniaturization, but also to help the design and application technology of the powerless dosimeter.

  • As well known, dowel bars are used to transfer traffic load acting on one edge to another edge of concrete slab in concrete pavement system. The dowel bars widely used in South Korea are round shape steel bar and they shows satisfactory performance under bending stress which is developed by repetitive traffic loading and environment loading. However, they are not invulnerable to erosion that may be caused by moisture from masonry joint or bottom of the pavement system. Especially, the erosion could rapidly progress with saline to prevent frost of snow in winter time. The problem under this circumstance is that the erosion not only drops strength of the steel dower bar but also comes with volume expansion of the steel dowel bar which can reduce load transferring efficiency of the steel dowel bar. To avoid this erosion problem in reasonable expenses, dowers bars with various materials are being developed. Fiber reinforced plastic(FRP) dower that is presented in this paper is suggested as an alternative of the steel dowel bar and it shows competitive resistance against erosion and tensile stress. The FRP dowel bar is developed in tube shape and is filled with high strength no shrinkage. Several slab thickness designs with the FRP dowel bars are performed by evaluating bearing stress between the dowel bar and concrete slab. To calculated the bearing stresses, theoretical formulation and finite element method(FEM) are utilized with material properties measured from laboratory tests. The results show that both FRP tube dowel bars with diameters of 32mm and 40mm satisfy bearing stress requirement for dowel bars. Also, with consideration that lean concrete is typical material to support concrete slab in South Korea, which means low load transfer efficiency and, therefore, low bearing stress, the FRP tube dowel bar can be used as a replacement of round shape steel bar.
