  • Zinc plated steel tire cords were treated with RF plasma polymerization coating of acetylene or butadiene in order to enhance adhesion to rubber compounds. Plasma polymerization was carried out as a function of plasma power, treatment tune and gas pressure. In order to maximize adhesion, argon plasma etching was performed, with carrier gas such as argon, nitrogen and oxygen, while the adhesion of tire cords was evaluated via TCAT. Best results were obtained from a combination treatment of argon etching (90 W. 10 min, 30 mTorr) and acetylene plasma polymerization coating (10 W, 30 sec, 30 mTorr) with argon carrier gas (25/5:acetylene/argon). These samples exhibited a pull out force of 285N which is comparable to that obtained from the brass plated tire cords (290N).

  • In this study, the thermal property and adhesion of the electroless-deposited Cu thin film were investigated. The multilayered structure of Cu /TaN /Si was fabricated by electroless-depositing the Cu thin layer on the TaN diffusion barrier which was deposited by MOCVD on the Si substrate. The thermal stability was investigated by measuring the resistivity as post-annealing temperature for the multilayered Cu /TaN /Si specimen which was annealed at atmospheres of $H_2$and Ar gases, respectively. The adhesion strength of Cu films was evaluated by the scratch test. The adhesion of the electroless-deposited Cu film was compared with other deposition methods of thermal evaporation and sputtering. The scratch test showed that the adhesion of electroless plated Cu film on TaN was better than that of sputtered Cu film and evaporated Cu film.

  • This study investigates the effect of carbon fiber sheet (CFS) and carbon fiber strand sheet (CFSS) on the fatigue resistance and compressive strength of RC slabs. The results of a comparison of the number of equivalent cycles between the CFS- and CFSS-reinforced RC slab test specimens obtained from a fatigue test indicate that the CFSS-reinforced RC slab has 1.2~1.3 times greater effect of reinforcement than the CFS-reinforced RC slab. This study also indicates that the fatigue resistance of the CFS- and CFSS-reinforced RC slabs is ensured when the compressive strength of concrete is not lower than the specified design strength prescribed in the Specifications for Highway Bridges but is not ensured when the compressive strength of concrete is lower than the specified design strength, although the effect of reinforcement is secured.

  • It has made a special study of bending behavior of F.R.P. sandwich beams with bonded 2nd-reinforced plies. Specimen's faces were made of chopped mat 300-450, roving clothes 570, core is urethane foam, resin is 713bp unsaturated polyester for ship construction and the mixture weight ratio of resin versus fiber was 55:45 for bending analysis. The purpose of this paper is to study the exact bending behavior of bonded area's deflection and stiffness depends upon various bonded F.R.P. (2nd reinforced ply) length and thickness on which covered joints and to find the optimum design for the sandwich structures. All results and suggestions are based on experiment and using thick face calculation.

  • Adhesive binders with core-shell structure of organic/organic pair were prepared by emulsion polymerization of acrylic monomers, such as methyl methacrylate(MMA), ethyl acrylate(EA), n-butyl acrylate(BA), and styrene(St). Ammonium persulfate (APS) was used as an water soluble initiator in the presence of an anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS). Non-woven fabric and leather were impregnated with the adhesive binder. The surface of the impregnated fabric and leather were treated with plasma technique and then kinetics analysis and mechanical properties were measured. The conversions of the polymerization of core-shell binder (MMA/EA, MMA/BA) were greater than 90%. When the core-shell binder was prepared at equimolar conditions, the increasing effect of the core-shell binder on the state peel strength of the impregnated and plasma-treated non-woven/non-woven fabric has the order of MMA/St, EA/BA, BA/MMA, EA/St, and EA/MMA. When the core-shell binder was prepared at non-equimolar conditions, the increasing effect of the core-shell binder on the state peel strength of the non-woven fabric/leather has the order of MMA/BA, BA/EA, MMA/EA, St/MMA, and EA/St.

  • The plasma generally, ionized gas state, is the 4th material state composed the universe. Generating the plasma artificially has been studied by spending energy and it has a lot of applications in human's life. There are several merits to modify the surface of polymer using plasma. Above all, plasma maintains the property of polymer because of it changes the property of surface only. Also, it doesn't use a organic solvent and it is the environment friendship because of there are no waste under processing. Furthemore, in case of high-pressure plasma, it is possible that automated-processing continuously. In this study, we tried the reforming of surface to rise the adhesive strength between the material of polymer, experimented the rising of adhesive strength through a experiment of peel strength by virtue of processing time and using gas, confirmed the change of polymer's surface through measuring the surface contact angle analyzer and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

  • Interfacial properties and microfailure degradation mechanisms of the bioabsorbable composites for implant materials were investigated using micromechanical technique and measurement of surface wettability. As hydrolysis time increased, the tensile strength, the modulus and the elongation of poly(ester-amide) (PEA) and bioactive glass fibers decreased, whereas those of chitosan fiber almost did not change. Interfacial shear strength (IFSS) between bioactive glass fiber and poly-L-lactide (PLLA) was much higher than PEA or chitosan fiber/PLLA systems using dual matrix composite (DMC) specimen. The decreasing rate of IFSS was the fastest in bioactive glass fiber/PLLA composites whereas that of chitosan fiber/PLLA composites was the slowest. Work of adhesion, $W_a$ between bioactive glass fiber and PLLA was the highest, and the wettability results were consistent with the IFSS. Interfacial properties and microfailure degradation mechanisms can be important factors to control bioabsorbable composite performance.

  • Bending fatigue characteristics of Cu films and $8{\mu}m$ width Cu interconnects on flexible substrates were investigated, and fatigue reliability improvement was achieved through Mo-Ti alloy adhesion layer. Tensile bending fatigue reliability of Cu interconnects is 3 times lower than that of Cu films, and even compressive bending fatigue reliability of Cu interconnects is 6 times lower than that of Cu films. From these results, mechanical crack formation could be fatal in Cu interconnects. With Mo-Ti adhesion layer, fatigue reliability of Cu films and interconnects were enhanced due to the increase of adhesion strength and the suppression of slip induced crack initiation.

  • The single carbon fiber tensile test was performed with electrical resistance measurement. Tensile property of single carbon fiber which accompanied by the relationship between the electric resistance and the strain was investigated. Since the collected data showed a linear relationship between them, the coefficient of fiber slip ratio (FSR) was obtained by computation. The fragmentation specimen (FS) was tested under tensile loading, and the single carbon fiber broke first due to the stress transferring form matrix to reinforcing fiber. The stress distribution of carbon fiber could be observed via the electrical resistance change. Slipping between carbon fiber and matrix was predicted based on the fragmentation test results, and the FSR was used to evaluate interfacial adhesion comparatively. The large FSR indicated poor interfacial bonding. Work of adhesion between carbon fiber and matrix was measured to verify the FSR method, and two results exhibited a consistent conclusion.
