  • In this paper, we introduce a design method for a broadband planar quasi-Yagi antenna (QYA) for terrestrial digital television (DTV) reception. The coplanar strip line which feeds the driver dipole is connected to a microstrip line and is terminated by short circuit. By appending a wide strip-type rectangular director at a location close to the driver dipole, broadband impedance matching and gain enhancement in a high frequency region are obtained. The gain characteristics in a low frequency region are improved by adding a reflector formed by a truncated ground plane. To reduce the antenna size, the strip-type dipole and reflector are modified to half bow-tie (V)-shaped elements. The effects of various parameters on the antenna characteristics are examined. An antenna, as a design example for the proposed antenna, is designed for the operation in the frequency band of 470-806 MHz for terrestrial DTV. The optimized antenna is fabricated on an FR4 substrate and the experimental results show that the antenna has a good performance such as a frequency band of 450-848 MHz for a VSWR < 2, gain > 4.1 dBi, and front-to-back ratio > 10.4 dB.

  • In this paper, a compact, broadband quasi-Yagi antenna utilizing balance analysis of the ultra-wideband microstrip-to-coplanar stripline(MS-to-CPS) balun is proposed. The antenna size was reduced by removing the reflector on bottom layer and ground plane is used as a reflector. A planar balun that transforms from microstrip(MS) to balanced coplanar stripline(CPS) is characterized in the amplitude and phase imbalances at CPS output ports are investigated and discussed. As compared with the conventional balun, the proposed MS-to-CPS balun demonstrated very wideband performance from 7 to over 20 GHz. From the simulation study, amplitude and phase imbalances are within 1 dB and ${\pm}5^{\circ}$, respectively. The implemented antenna provides very wide bandwidth from 6.9 to 15.1 GHz(74.5 %). The gain of the antenna is from 3.7 to 5.5 dBi, the front-to-back ratio is more than 10 dB, and the nominal radiation efficiency is about 94 %.

  • In this paper, we extract the parasitic elements of the transmission line with the defected ground structure(DGS) and the short-circuited comb line section using the Short-Open Calibration(SOC). The scattering matrixes of short, open and the distributed elements in microstrip line are measured by full electro-magnetic(EM) simulator and Vector Network Analyser(VNA). The electro-magnetic effects of the proposed structures are considered by the II and T equivalent circuits with frequency independent elements, and the relations between the measured scattering parameters and the elements in the circuits are shown by performing 2 port network analysis. Moreover, to design the 2.4 GHz bandpass filter with second order butterworth prototype, the proposed methods are applied. As results, the measured $S_{11}$ and $S_{21}$ indicate -20 dB and -1.3 dB at center frequency, and these are shown within 5 % error compare to the predicted results at $0.5{\sim}5\;GHz$.

  • In this work, an aperture-coupled patch array antenna with wideband characteristics was designed and arrayed in a $4{\times}1$ S-band. The designed antenna structure consists of two layers, and it possesses wideband characteristics achieved using coupling between the two layers. The first layer is comprised of four radiation patches and the second layer has an aperture and a ground plane. The antenna structure possesses 15 % wideband characteristics and the center frequency is at 3.2 GHz. A phase shifter was added to the array antenna to enable beam steering. The proposed phase array antenna was fabricated and measured. Our proposed design enables beam steering up to $35^{\circ}$.

  • In this paper, a broadband antenna of the CPW structure with a band-notched characteristic is presented. To obtain this characteristic, the complementary split ring resonator(CSRR) is inserted in the ground plane. In addition, the IEEE 802.11a WLAN band(5.15~5.825 GHz) appears in the band-notched characteristic. The proposed antenna dimension is $36{\times}60{\times}1.6\;mm^3$, and it is designed on the FR-4 substrate having a relative dielectric constant of 4.4. The designed antenna shows that the resonant frequency is 2.03~10.78 GHz below the return loss of -10 dB and a VSWR less than 2 was satisfied. As a result, the proposed CSRR has a band-notched characteristic in the range of 4.917~6.017 GHz which the center frequency is about 5.4 GHz band.

  • This paper presents a power detector circuit which monitors the transmitting power for the application in CDMA cell phones. The proposed power detector are composed of coupler for coupling output power and detector fur monitoring output power. The designed coupler has low loss characteristic because it adopts the stripline structure which consists of two ground planes at both sides of signal plane. The design frequency is 824-849MHz which is the Tx band fur CDMA mobile terminal, and the coupling factor of the stripline coupler is -20dB. A schottky barrier diode is adopted for detector design because of its high speed operation with minimized loss. The required impedance matching is performed to improve the linearity and sensitivity of output voltage at relatively low detector input level where the nonlinear characteristic of diode exists. The package parasitics as well as intrinsic diode model are considered for simulation of the detector. The predicted performances agree well with the measured results.

  • To interpret the movement historv of the Yangsan fault, the paleostresses were analyzed from about 1,000 striated small faults and 330 extension joints which were measured from 37 sites near and along the strike of the Yangsan fault from Yangsan-si, Kyeongsangnam-do to the Shinkwang-myeon, Kyeongsangbuk-do. Six sequential tectonic events have boen established as followings: (I) NW-SE extension, (Il) ENE-WSW compression and NNW-SSE extension, (III) NW-SE compression, (W) ENE-WSW extension, (V) E-W comoression and N-S extension, and (VI) NNE-SSW compression and(VI) NNE-SSWextension. The movement history of the Yangsan fault rnrning in NNE direction were inteepreted based on these six sequential stress fields. The initial feature of the Yangsan fault was formed at the first stage with the development of extension fractures by tectonic event (I) of NW-SE extension. The fault was acted continuously with a right-1ateral strike-slip movement by tectonic event( II) closely related to event( I). The movements had been continued until the Late Miocene. This age was the most active period in faulting. The left-lateral strike-slip movement was followed by subsequent tectonic events (ffi) and (IV). The activity of the Yangsan fault was suspended temporarily by compression of tectonic event (V) which was perpendicular to the strike of the fault. This period might be very short and the magnitude of the tectonic was also small. In the last stage, the fault acted with slight extension or right-lateral moveenent by tectonic event (VI).
