A Study on the Combustion Characteristics of Spark Plug with Pre-ignition Chamber (예연소실을 갖는 점화플러그의 연소 특성에 관한 연구)

  • The new concept spark plug was developed to study its influence on the combustion characteristics of SI engine. It has pre-ignition chamber in the lower end of spark plug and flame hole, in which fresh mixture gas can be introduced without any fuel supply system. This spark plug was tested with a commercial SI engine. Fuel consumption rate, emission gas and MBT timing were measured in the engine dynamometer for various flame hole numbers, hole positions, hole sizes of the pre-ignition chamber of the spark plug. And average flame propagation speed was measured by using the head gasket ionization probe in single cylinder engine. The new concept spark plug induces fast bum in combustion compared with the conventional spark plug, and MBT(Minimum advance for Best Torque) timing was retarded about $3{\sim}5^{\circ}$ crank angle. The flame hole number, hole direction and volume of pre-ignition chamber were found to influence the combustion characteristics.

  • New concept spark plug was developed to study its influence on the combustion characteristics of SI engine. It has pre-ignition chamber at the lower end of spark plug and flame hole, in which fresh mixture gas can be put in through the flame hole without any fuel supply system. This spark plug was tested in a single cylinder engine dynamometer for different air fuel ratio to measure the fuel consumption rate, emission gases, and MBT timing. And constant volume combustion chamber was made to understand flame characteristics of spark plug. New spark plug induced fast burn compared to the conventional spark plug and its effects were increased in lean air fuel ratio. Pre-ignition chamber spark plug with 5 holes which had adjusted size was more stable and effective in combustion performance than pre-ignition chamber spark plug with 1 hole. And its effects showed larger differences in lean air fuel ratio than stoichiometric condition. Flame kernel and flame growth process of conventional spark plug and pre-ignition chamber spark plug studied by flame visualization of schlieren method.

  • Internal combustion engine is the main source of environmental pollutants and therefore better technology is required to reduce harmful elements from the exhaust gases all over the world. Especially, harmful elements from the exhaust gases are caused by incomplete combustion of mixture inside the engine cylinder and this abnormal combustion like misfire or partial burning is the direct cause of the air pollution and engine performance degradation. the object of this research is to detect abnormal combustion like misfire and to keep the engine performance in the optimal operating state. Development of a new system therefore could be applied to a real car. To realize this, the spark-plug in a conventional ignition system is used as a misfire detection sensor and breakdown voltage is analyzed. In this research, bias voltage(about 3kV) was applied to the electrodes of spark-plug and breakdown voltage signal is obtained. This breakdown voltage signal is analyzed and found that a combustion phenomena in engine cylinder has close relationship with harmonic coefficient K which was introduced in this research. Newly developed combustion diagnostic method( breakdown voltage signal analysis) from this research can be used for the combustion diagnostic and combustion control system in an real car.

  • This paper, we analyzed that the measured data of the radiated power spectrum of electromagnetic waves of the normal spark ignition system and the spark ignition system with feed through type ceramic condenser. The results show that the strength of power spectrum radiated from the system with feed through type ceramic condenser is weaker than the normal system, and the density of power spectrum radiated from the system with feed through type ceramic condenser is smaller than the normal system. From these results, the feed through type ceramic condenser can reduce the electromagnetic waves radiating from the spark ignition system which is the spurious emission, and it can be concluded that the ignition coil of the spark ignition system generating high voltage pulse is equivalent to the radio frequency oscillator which is oscillating high frequency from a electronic point of view.

  • Engine misfire causes of the negative effect on exhaust emission such as HC, CO, and NOX . Moreover, it causes damage to the three-way-catalyst(TWC) system permanently. The crankshaft velocity fluctuation(CVF) method has been applied for the real cars as misfire detection system usually, which utilizes the crank angle sensor input to calculate the variation of the crankshaft rotational speed. But this approach has the limit due to the fact that three could be problem under certain engine condition like as deceleration or high speed condition . Therefore the development of new methods are requested today. This study introduced the new method of misfire detection using breakdown voltage(BDV) characteristics between spark plug electrouds.

Knock Detection Using an Ionization Probe Installed Spark Plug (이온프로브 장착 점화플러그를 이용한 노크발생 판정)

  • A new method of knock detection in SI engines, using a change of ion concentration in the combustion chamber, was developed. In order to measure in-cylinder ionization current, ionization probes were installed at spark plug and cylinder head of production engine. It was found that the electric current generated by ionized gas in core burned gas region of knocking cycle is between 2 and 10 times larger than that of normal cycle, because the burned gas temperature which is the dominant parameter of a change of ion concentration increases. However, a change of ionization current in boundary region of burned gas is relatively weak. Hence a change of ion concentration in core burned gas region can be used for knock detection.

  • Pencil-core dies are relatively new technology in Korea. It is not that no one had tried to make them but had failed due to lack of technologies. However, Posco TMC Co., Ltd, one of the leading die makers in the world, is capable of sophisticated dies including pencil-core dies. Spark plugs made by pencil-core dies have energy efficiency close to 100 percent, which compares to 46 percent of conventional spark plugs. Even though they are now mostly installed in LPG automobiles, more and more diesel and gasoline vehicles are adopting them. This study focuses on how to improve core shape precision using controling design and parts machining methods for pencil-core dies and productivity.

  • 맥동 연소기는 기존의 연속 연소식 연소기에 비하여 높은 열효율, 소형화, 연소과정의 개선, 시동후 점화플러그 및 송풍팬의 불필요, 자력 배기와 장시 간 안전 운전등의 장점들로 인하여 최근 연구대상으로서 주목을 받고 있다. 맥동연소 현상은 1800년경부터 알려졌음에도 불구하고 기본적인 연소메카니 즘 및 기본동작 원리에 대한 미비점 및 높은 소음 등으로 인하여 종래의 연 구는 거의 실험을 통하여 이루어 졌으며 이러한 것들이 현재까지도 맥동 연 소기의 발전에 걸림돌이 되고 있다. 맥동 연소기가 산업용 및 가정용 열기기 로서 사용되기 위하여 진동과 소음의 감소에 대한 엄격한 요구를 만족하지 않으면 안된다. 따라서, 그에 대한 효과적인 방지 설계를 하기 위하여 진동 원과 소음원이 어느 부위에서 전달되어 오는지를 파악하는 것이 중요하다.. 본 연구에서는 맥동연소기의 소음원을 규명하기 위하여 종래에 사용되어 온 주파수 응답함수법과 소음원간에 강한 상관관계가 존재하는 경우에 사용되 는 기여도함수법을 이용하여 다차원 스펙트럼해석법에 의하여 입출력간의 기여관계를 규명하였다.

  • This article describes an estimate method of the spark plug gap by measuring breakdown voltage. Breakdown voltage is the function of spark plug gap, pressure, temperature and humidify. However. It is dominated mainly by the spark plug gap. This technique is applied to in-line process test of the spark plug gap in automobile engine production. Breakdown voltage of normal spark plugs slightly scatters in ordinary conditions and if there is dust or burr in the gap, breakdown voltage gets lower. This technique saves repairing time for bad spark plug and attributes to improve the quality of automobile engine.

  • Several factors of the efficient combustion process are shape of combustion chamber, position of spark plug, turbulence flow and so on. the shape of combustion chamber and position of spark plug are constrained to geometrically, and then it could not make a change the shape easily. But the turlence flow in combustion chamber have a great influence on combustion phenomena, and which is much easier to control relatively. And since characteristics of turbulence flow would be very important to the stability of combustion and performances, This study is also essential to future engine-low emission and lean burn engine. This paper shows that the visualization of the turbulence flow of single cylinder engine by using 2way, $45^{\circ}$ inclined and 2 channel hot wire probe through the park plug hole. We also study the characteristics of turbulence flow by means of ensemble averaged mean velocity, turvulence intensity and integral length scale.
