It is important to obtain detailed physical and mechanical properties of the soil for effective and economical plans and constructions of the structures located on deep seabed soft clay layer. This study is to find out the engineering properties of the seabed soft clay such as water content, initial void ratio, liquid and plastic limits, the compression index, etc., to make correlations between soil parameters, and to compare and analyze the findings with that from the previous researchers. Finally a representative correlation among the soil parameters was determined.
Marine dredged soils taken from navigation channels or construction sites of coastal area usually have a lot of salt in pores of clayey soils. This paper investigates effect of salt on mechanical characteristics of non-salt and salt-rich stabilized dredged soil. The stabilized dredged soil (SDS) consisted of dredged soil and cement. Several pairs of SDS with non-salt and salt-rich dredged soils, noted as N-SDS and S-SDS, respectively, were prepared to compare their strengths and compressibility characteristics. The microstructures, strength and compressibility characteristics of N-SDS and S-SDS specimens at 7 and 28 days of curing time were evaluated using scanning electronic microscope (SEM), unconfined compression test, and oedometer test. It was found that salt concentration of clayey soil affected not only the formation of soil structure but also the strength development of mixture. The compression index and swelling index of S-SDS were also greater than those of N-SDS, which indicated that the compressibility of mixture increased due to salt concentration. Salinity in clayey soil had a negative effect on the strength development and compressibility characteristics of stabilized dredged soils.

This study aims at investigating of the behavioral characteristics of foundation ground subjected to a strip load in anisotropy. Using marine clays sampled at Shihwa area, a series of laboratory tests including triaxial compressive test, plane strain compressive and expansion tests that allows horizontal deformation only and zero strain (${\varepsilon}_2$) in the direction of intermediate stress (${\sigma}_2$) are conducted. In addition, a numerical analysis using parameters obtained from the tests is carried out. In the numerical analysis, Cam-clay model that simulates the behavior of natural deposited clay properly is adopted. The analysis results show that the vertical displacements of the plane strain compressive tests are relatively larger than those of triaxial compressive tests by 18-25%. Likewise, the horizontal displacements is 13-19% larger.

Online testing method is one of the numerical experiment methods using experimental information for a numerical analysis directly. The method has an advantage in that analysis can be conducted without using an idealized mechanical model, because mechanical properties are updated from element test for a numerical analysis in real time. The online testing method has mainly been used for the geotechnical seismic engineering, whose major target is sand. A testing method that may be applied to a consolidation problem has recently been developed and laboratory and field verifications have been tried. Although related research thus far has mainly used a method to update average reaction for a numerical analysis by positioning an element tests at the center of a consolidation layer, a weakness that accuracy of the analysis can be impaired as the thickness of the consolidation layer becomes more thicker has been pointed out regarding the method. To clarify the effectiveness and possible analysis scope of the online testing method in relation to the consolidation problem, we need to review the results by applying experiment conditions that may completely exclude such a factor. This research reviewed the results of the online consolidation test in terms of reproduction of the consolidation settlement and the dissipation of excess pore water pressure of a clay specimen by comparing the results of an online consolidation test and a separated-type consolidation test carried out under the same conditions. As a result, the online consolidation test reproduced the change of compressibility according effective stress of clay without a huge contradiction. In terms of the dissipation rate of excess pore water pressure, however, the online consolidation test was a little faster. In conclusion, experiment procedure needs to improve in a direction that hydraulic conductivity can be updated in real time so as to more precisely predict the dissipation of excess pore water pressure. Further research or improvement should be carried out with regard to the consolidation settlement after the end of the dissipation of excess pore water pressure.
In this research, laboratory tests were carried out to investigate the engineering properties of Light-Weight Air Foamed Soil (LWAS) based on silty clays with the animal foaming agent and cement. LWAS has been used as an embankment material over soft ground for road and side extension of the existing road. In field, unit weight and flow value is measured right after producing in mixing plant in order to control the quality of LWAS, and laboratory tests are carried out to confirm the quality through compressive strength of LWAS as well. In this research, direct estimation of the specification requirement of strength using flow values in field is the main purpose of the study together with other characteristics. From the test results, it can be seen that flow values increase with the initial water content and unit weight increases with the depth due to material segregation. Compared to the upper specimen, lower end of 60 cm specimen shows about 2 times higher compressive strength. Relationship between flow values and normalized factor presented by Yoon & Kim (2004) was presented. With that relationship, compressive strength can be predicted from flow values in field. From the relationship, the normalized factor was calculated. Thereafter calculated compressive strengths according to the flow values were compared to measured strengths in the laboratory. The higher the initial water content of the dredged soil has, the better relationship between predicted and measured shows. Therefore it is necessary to predict the compressive strength in advance through the relationship between the flow value and the normalized factor to reflect it in the design stage.
Recently, domestic waste landfills are constructed sometimes on seashore area to provide large landfill area. In order to strengthen the foundation of landfills and to prevent the infiltration of leachate through the bottom, many cases of constructing cement hardened liners on seashore clays are found. In these cases, it is possible to have cracks in the hardened liners due to settlement with waste load since the stiffness of the hardened liner Is greater than that of clay liners. In this study, the capability of Self-Sealing and Self-Healing (SSSH) liner made with a seashore clay in the metropolitan landfill to prevent the percolation of water and leachate is examined using flexible-wall permeameter test and using uniaxial compression test. Applicability of SSSH to weathered granitic soil is also examined for self-sealing capabilities. The result of Flexible permeameter test for SSSH with the seashore clay showed that permeability obtained was lower than permeability criteria of Korean waste management law. The permeability and strength characteristics of SSSH with granitic soil and bentonite showed better results than with the seashore clay.

Recently, a deep mixture method as a soil improvement method of marine soft ground, which causes less noise and vibration than other methods, are widely used. In this study, for DCM(Deep Cement Mixing) method, one of the deep mixture method, optimum mixing ratio of clay-cement was suggested using uniaxial compression tests on specimens with various mixing ratio of claycement. In addition, the stability of a caisson on tangent circle-type and wall-type DCM treated ground was evaluated using centrifuge tests. As a result, optimum mixing ratio of clay-cement was 28.5% and the stability of the caisson on DCM treated ground was confirmed. However, the lateral displacement of the caisson on the wall-type DCM treated ground was 7% less and the settlement of that was 39% less than the case of the tangent-circle-type DCM method.
In order to investigate the physical and chemical properties of artificial culture media, the specimens were substituted with 5~20% clay, 10~30%(w) quick lime, 5~l5%(w) burnt plaster and 10%(w) sawdust. Fly ash-clay bodies were sintered at 1,050~1,20$0^{\circ}C$ and then their properties were determined. It was found that 90FA10JC(fly ash +clay(90:10, %(w)) specimen sintered at 1,15$0^{\circ}C$ for 10 min. had good physical and chemical properties. When this composition was supplement with 10%(w) sawdust, bulk density water absorption, apparent porosity, compressive strength and pH after 240 hrs curing time were 1.14, 54.4%, 39.5%, 54 kgf.cm$^{-2}$ and 7.1 respectively. The physical properties of fly ash-quick lime-burnt plaster system specimens were superior to FAJC systems. However, this composition we not suitable as a artificial culture media because of its high pH. In this study, it was shown that 90FA10JC10SD(90FA10JC +10%(w) sawdust) system exhibited the best physical properties.
The paper processed settlement analysis using Finite Elements Method(FEM). Because Stress Distribution Ratio has to be decreased, for settlement analysis of soft clay deposit improved by sand compaction piles(SCP). Back analysis was processed comparing the measured settlements of laboratory model tests and finite element analysis where the SCP treated area was assumed as mixed ground with clay deposit rather than being a composite ground. The paper proposes a methodology which employs a compression index($C_c$) for settlement analysis of soft clay deposit improved by sand compaction piles from the back analysis. This approach is applied to a field measurement case(A revetment founded on the SCP improved clay deposit with the replacement ratio of 45%).
The soil parameters important for the design of the soft ground are the compression index ($C_c$), the consolidation settlement and consolidation speed at the field. Compression index is obtained by laboratory consolidation test. In the laboratory consolidation test, sample disturbance always occurs. In order to correct the disturbance phenomena, the method of calculating the compression index proposed by Schmertmann (1955) is generally used. However, recent developments in sampling technology and Korean soil conditions are different from those proposed by Schmertmann. So it needs to be verified. In this study, each consolidation curve's cross void ratio is evaluated by doing consolidation test varying disturbance on high-plastic clay (CH), low-plastic clay (CL) and low-plastic silt (ML). The test results were $0.521e_0$ for low-plastic silt, $0.404e_0$ for low-plastic clay, and $0.458e_0$ for the high-plastic clay. This results were different from those of Schmertmann's suggested value of $0.42e_0$. Therefor we proposed a correction formula using the plastic index according to soil type. However, since the results of this study are limited test results, further studies on various korean soil are needed to suggest the compression index correction method according to the degree of plasticity index of soil.
