  • The gridless (or meshfree) methods, such as MPS, SPH, FPM an so forth, are feasible and robust for the problems with moving boundary and/or complicated boundary shapes, because these methods do not need to generate a grid system. In this study, a gridless solver, which is based on the combination of moving least square interpolations on a cloud of points with point collocation for evaluating the derivatives of governing equations, is presented for two-dimensional unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes problem in the low Reynolds number. A MAC-type algorithm was adopted and the Poission equation for the pressure was solved successively in the moving least square sense. Some typical problems were solved by the presented solver for the validation and the results obtained were compared with analytic solutions and the numerical results by conventional CFD methods, such as a FVM.

  • This paper deals with the effect of an adjacent viscous fluid on the torsional vibration of a circular rod excited by a transducer at one end. The interaction between the torsional vibration of the rod and the fluid has been studied theoretically and expressed in terms of the mechanical impedance. The theoretically-obtained trend that the mechanical impedance is proportional to the square root of the viscosity times density of the fluid has been confirmed by the impedance measurement. The paper demonstrates that a torsionally-vibrating rod can be used as a sensor measuring the viscosity of a fluid.

  • Rheological properties such as yield stress and viscosity is the main parameters to determine the fluidity of the debris flow. In this study, several series of rheometer tests were performed to investigate rheological properties of fine-grained soil samples with various sand contents and various liquidity indices. Test results indicated that the general shape of the flow curves for fine-grained soils had characteristics of a shear thinning fluid, with a decrease in viscosity as shear rate increases. The yield stress and viscosity of fine-grained soil samples with same sand content gradually decreased as the liquidity index increased. At the same liquidity index, yield stress and viscosity of fine-grained soil increased with an increase in sand content. The yield stress and viscosity of fine-grained soil greatly decreased with a slight increase in water content. Also, the yield stress and viscosity tend to increase with increasing concentration by volume($C_v$) of the fluid matrix. The values of the four coefficients ${\alpha}_1$, ${\alpha}_2$, ${\beta}_1$, and ${\beta}_2$ were obtained by regression analysis for each fine-grained soil.

  • Rock grouting is important to improve the waterproof efficiency and mechanical strength of rock medium with joint for utilizing the underground rock space such as tunnel. The grouting materials typically has been used the cement materials, which represent Bingham fluid model. This model can express the relationship of viscosity and yield strength. In addition, it is dependent with elapsed time. The grouting injection performance can be deteriorated with an increase of viscosity and yield strength in the grouting process if the time dependence is ignored. Therefore, in this study, the characteristics of viscosity and yield strength were investigated according to water-cement ratio and time dependence in the laboratory test. Numerical simulation was carried out to investigate the grouting performance according to the time dependence of characteristics in terms of the viscosity model. Given the results, the grouting injected distance and cumulative grout volume were significantly decreased when the time dependence of grouting material was considered. This study, considering the characteristics according to the time dependence of viscosity and yield strength, will be meaningful to the design of grouting injection in field applications.

  • This paper presents a machine learning technique applied to prediction of time-dependent local scour around bridge piers in both non-cohesive and cohesive beds. The support vector machines (SVM), which is known to be free from overfitting, is used. The time-dependent scour depths are expressed by 7 and 9 variables for the non-cohesive and cohesive beds, respectively. The SVM models are trained and validated with time series data from different sources of experiments. Resulting Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) indicates that the models are trained and validated properly. Comparisons are made with the results from Choi and Choi's formula and Scour Rate in Cohesive Soils (SRICOS) method by Briaud et al., as well as measured data. This study reveals that the SVM is capable of predicting time-dependent local scour in both non-cohesive and cohesive beds under the condition that sufficient data of good quality are provided.

  • The main objective of this paper is to evaluate the control performance of a coulomb friction damper(CFD) for controlling the inelastic behavior of seismically excited structures, The seismic performances of various buildings are evaluated using capacity spectrum method(CSM), and the additional dampings are calculated If the evaluated performance levels of the buildings are below the target level. Maximum friction force of the CFD to achieve additional damping is provided using the concept of equivalent viscous damping, Numerical simulations for single degree of freedom(SDOF) systems with various structural periods and post yield stiffness ratios demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed procedure.

  • A new model for describing the behavior of clay under monotonic and cyclic loading is proposed. This model uses the hyperbolic representation for the stress -strain relationship in overconsolidated state and it describes undrained effective stress path on the basis of the critical state theory. The developed constitutive model by using an energy dissipation equation can describe the behavior of clay in heavily overconsolidated state as u.ell as lightly overconsolidated state under monotonic loading. In order to extend the model for the behavior of clay under cyclic loading, a shift function of undrained stress spacing ratio is introduced in the constitutive model developed for monotonlc loading. A single additional parameter is required to represent the cyclic effect and it can be reasonably deter mined from the test results. The measured behavior in undrained cyclic triaxial tests has been easily and precisely predicted by the newly developed constitutive model.

  • When a slope failure or a debris flow occurs, a shear strength on failure plane becomes nearly zero and soil begins to flow like a non-cohesive liquid. A consistency of cohesive soils changes as a water content increases. Even a cohesive soil existing at liquid limit state has a small amount of shear strength. In this study, a water content, at which a shear strength of cohesive soils is zero and then cohesive soils will start to flow, was proposed. Three types of clays (kaolinite, bentonite and kaolinite (50%)+bentonite (50%)) were mixed with three different solutions (distilled water, sea water and microbial solution) at liquid limit state and then their water contents were increased step by step. Then, their undrained shear strength was measured using a portable vane shear device called Torvane. The ranges of undrained shear strength at liquid and plastic limits are 3.6-9.2 kPa and 24-45 kPa, respectively. On the other hand, the water content that corresponds to the value of the undrained shear strength changing most rapidly is called flow water content. The flow limit refers to the water content when undrained shear strength of cohesive soils is zero. In order to investigate the relationship between liquid limit and flow limit, the cohesive index was defined as a value of the difference between flow limit and liquid limit. The new plasticity index was defined as the value of difference between flow limit and plastic limit. The new liquidity index was also defined using flow limit. The values of flow limit are 1.5-2 times higher than those of liquid limit. At the same time, the values of new plasticity index are 2-5.5 times higher than those of original plasticity index.

  • This study examined the effect of binder-to-soil ratio(B/S) and water-to-binder ratio(W/B) on the flow and compressive strength development of soil concrete using high-volume supplementary cementitious materials. As a partial replacement of ordinary portland cement, 10% by-pass dust, 40% ground granulated blast-furnace slag, and 25% circulating fluidized bed combustion fly ash were determined in the preliminary tests. Using the low-cement binder incorporated with clay soil or sandy soil, a total of 18 soil concrete mixtures was prepared. The flow of the soil concrete tended to increase with the increase in W/B and B/S, regardless of the type of soils. The compressive strength was commonly higher in sandy soil concrete than in clay soil concrete with the same mixture condition. Considering the high-workability and compressive strength development, it could be recommended for low-cement soil concrete to be mixed under the following condition: B/S of 0.35 and W/B of 175%.

  • When the systolic blood pressure is high, intermittent turbulence in blood flow appears in the aorta and carotid artery with stenosis during the systolic period. The turbulent blood flow is difficult to analyze using the Newtonian turbulence model due to the viscous characteristics of blood flow. As the shear rate is increased, the blood viscosity decreases by the viscoelastic properties of blood and a drag reduction phenomenon occurs in turbulent blood flow. Therefore, a new non-Newtonian turbulent model is required for viscoelastic fluid and hemodynamics. The main aims of this study were to develop a non-Newtonian turbulence model using the drag reduction phenomenon based on the standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulent model for a general non-Newtonian fluid. This was validated with the experimental data and has a good tendency for non-Newtonian turbulent flow. In addition, the computation time and resources were lower than those of the low Reynolds number turbulent model. A modified turbulent model was used to analyze various turbulent blood flows.
