Joints developed around the Moryang fault were investigated by traverse and inventory methods in order to characterize their orientation, spacing and density. The results of the traverse method show that the orientation of the dominant joint sets of the study area is NNE and EW, and that joint spacing distribution is a negative exponential distribution to the center of the fault and a log-normal distribution to the margin of the fault. The results of the inventory method show that the orientation of the dominant joint sets on joint map is NW and NE, and that joint density tends to increase toward the center of the fault. Fractal dimension was determined by using Box-counting method and Cantor's dust method to quantify the distribution of joint network and to evaluate the dimension around the fault. The dimension determined by Box-counting method ranges from 1.31 to 1.70 and shows the tendency of increasing value toward the center of the fault. Comparing fractal dimension by Box-counting method with joint density, fractal dimension is directly proportional to joint density. Nevertheless, fractal dimension could be varied due to the different distribution patterns of the joints with same density. The dimensions determined by Cantor's dust method show different values with respect to the orientation of scan lines. This results form the anisotropy of joint distribution.
Field investigations of the orientations of discontinuity planes inside the borehole for designing the underground rock structures have been depend solely on the borehole image-taking techniques. But, borehole image-taking has to be processed after the completion of drilling operation and also requires the handling of highly expensive apparatus so that practical application is very restricted. In this study Discontinuity Orientation Measurement (DOM) drilling system and discontinuity analysis model RoSA-DOM are developed to acquire the reliable information of rock structure by analyzing the characteristics of joint distribution. DOM drilling system retrieves the rock core on which the reference line of pre-fixed drilling orientation is engraved. Coordinates of three arbitrary points on the joint surface relative to the position of reference line are assessed to determine the orientation of joint plane. The position of joint plane is also allocated by calculating the location of core axis at which joint plane is intersected. Then, the formation of joint set is analyzed by utilizing the clustering algorithm. Total and set spacings are calculated by considering the borehole axis as the scanline. Engineering applicability of in-situ rock mass around the borehole is also estimated by calculating the total and regional RQDs along the borehole axis.
Fine grained granite, porphyritic granite and biotite granite together with intruded and extruded andesitic rocks are distributed in the study area which is bounded by the Yangsan and Dongrae faults. A new domestic road is being constructed along the area between the two major faults. The NNE trending Bupki fault and NE trending Myungkog fault are also developed within the area cross the road. The sheeting joints with dips of less than 30 degrees are only developed in the area of granite outcrop. High angle joints can be divided into 3 sets, such as, NE trending, NW trending and nearly EW trending joints. The joint space is mostly more than 20cm and the joint compressive strength is more than 100 MPa. These data show that even though the study area is situated between large faults, the ground condition is good because the damage zone of the Yangsan and Dongrae faults is relatively narrow.
Structural and geological engineering properties of the rock mass distributed in the Yokmang mountain area were investigated to detenninc the usable cut-out volume and quarrying efficiency. The study area is located in the southern tip of the Yangsan fault system which controls the geological structure of the Kvungsang basin. As a result, the study area is mainly composed of andesicic. rhyolitic. and granitic rocks of the Cretaceous Kyungsang Supergroup and a series of right-handed strike-slip faults is developed along NNE-SSW direction. These regional faults significantly affect the spatial and meclwnical characteristics of joints such as spacing, frequency, and compressive strength. The joint frequency is highest along the fault zones and decreases toward the remote region. Based on the geological information obtained from the field survey, the detailed structure of the Yokmang mountain was analyzed and the volume of the rock mass was assessed. Considering the minimum rock block size required for the construction of a coastal dumping site, potential cut-out volume is then estimated to be 4,018,000m$^3$ the volume % of which is 48% of Yokmang mountain including the soil and weathered rock and 61% of the unweathered rock mass.
The surveyed area is mainly distributed by the sedimentary rocks, tuffs, and esites in Cretaceous age and acidic and basic dikes are intruded in these rocks. The principle discontinuities are represented by beddings, joints and faults. The trends of the beddings of sedimentary rocks develop as E-W direction in the start area. However, they are gradually bending and finally their trends are N-S direction in terminal area. In the sedimentary rocks the 3∼4 joint sets are distributed and in dikes joints are more scattered. The majority of joints are highly dipped. Sampo fault which has NE-SW trend makes a valley and NW trending normal faults are well developed at 50k+600 to 51k+000 area. During the construction of tunnel the orientation of discontinuities will not significantly influence on the stability of excavation. Since the rock mass is extensively jointed, the overbreak in tunnel wall may be placed.

The characteristics of rockfall are determined by virtually all factors and conditions e.g. the physical figure of the slope such as inclination, height, roughness, the elemental figure of the slope such as vegetation and material deposited, and the shape and weight of the rockfall itself. Although it is one of the major factors to be considered in rockfall simulation, little attention has been given to the weight of the rockfall. And, since the size of the rockfall is dominated by joint spacing, the distribution of the rockfall block weight can be predicted as a function of the joint spacing. In this study, the weight distribution of rockfall was estimated by using the method of volumetric joint count, $J_{\nu}$, based on joint spacing, and $RQD-J_{\nu}$. The results indicate that the weight distributions were analogous in two methods, and the distribution was to be $75.3{\sim}76.7%$ for 200 kilograms or lesser, $15.0{\sim}16.6%$ for $200{\sim}400$ kilograms, and $6.7{\sim}9.7%$ for 400 kilograms or more, which show good matches with the actual on-site weight distribution. Therefore, the weight distribution of rockfall suggested in this paper is able to be considered as appropriate data for rockfall simulation.
Though the Grouting has been in use for a long time, it is still regarded as an technique rather than engineering. The study of ground improvement by grouting is rare especially in jointed rock mass. In this study, biaxial compression tests were performed in the jointed rock mass models with .ough surfBce joints assembled with blocks before and after grouting. The load-deformation curves of the jointed rock masses showed a non-linear relationship before grouting but showed a relatively linear deformaion behavior after grouting. Improvement ratio (deformation modulus after grouting/deformation modulus before grouting) decreased with increasing joint spacing and lateral stress. Improvement ratio decreased exponentially with increasing deformation modulus of the rock mass model before grouting. Three-dimensional FDM analysis was performed to a highway tunnel case using experimental data of grouted rock. The convergence of the tunnel predicted after grouting by the numerical modelling coincided with those attained from the field measurement.
The quantitative analyses and the mechanical interpretation of discontinuity planes are the most important factor for the study of strength and deformation properties of rock masses containing discontinuity planes. However, the relationship between the factors investigated in the field and the actual mechanical properties of discontinuity planes is not fully understood. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of density, length, and spacing of joints on elastic modulus of rock masses as these values vary. A new parameter which has a direct relation with the elastic modulus of discontinuity planes is also preposed in this study. The combination of finite element methods and homogenization methods has been used for the numerical analyses of a uintcell with discontinuity planes, which is generated using random-number generation methods. The elastic modulus of the discontinuity plane is found from the numerical analyses. The final results propose not only the relation between the investigation parameters of discontinuity planes and the elastic modulus of rock masses but also a new parameter, an effect area ratio having a linear relation with the elastic modulus of rock masses.

This study investigates the changes of subsidence and hydraulic conductivity by underground mining. Coupling between post-mining induced strains and strain-dependent hydraulic conductivities is obtained by idealizing a jointed rock mass as an equivalent porous medium in which the hydraulic conductivity of a single joint is defined through parallel plate description. Results indicate that post-mining hydraulic conductivities are directly related to the strain field occurred by subsidence induced deformation. Maximum subsidence and hydraulic conductivity values increase as a panel width does widen. Joint spacing has an effect on the intensity of the changes in hydraulic conductivity.
