The South China Sea (SCS) is a typical marginal sea characterized with the deep basin, shelf break, shallow shelf, many straits, and complex bathymetry. This study investigated the tidal characteristics and propagation, and reproduced typhoon-induced storm surge in this region using the regional real-time tide-surge model, which was based on the unstructured grid, resolving in detail the region of interest and forced by tide at the open boundary and by wind and air pressure at the surface. Typhoon Haiyan, which occurred in 2013 and caused great damage in the Philippines, was chosen as a case study to simulate typhoon's impact. Amplitudes and phases of four major constituents were reproduced reasonably in general, and the tidal distributions of four constituents were similar to the previous studies. The modelled tide seemed to be within the acceptable levels, considering it was difficult to reproduce the tide in this region based on the previous studies. The free oscillation experiment results described well the feature of tide that the diurnal tide is prevailing in the SCS. The tidal residual current and total energy dissipation were discussed to understand the tidal and sedimentary environments. The storm-surge caused by typhoon Haiyan was reasonably simulated using this modeling system. This study established the regional real-time barotropic tide/water level prediction system for the South China Sea including the seas around the Philippines through the validation of the model and the understanding of tidal characteristics.
The LCM test is one of the most powerful and reliable methods for designing the disc cutter and for predicting the TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) performance. It has an advantage to predict the actual load on disc cutter from the laboratory test on the real-size large rock samples, however, it also has a disadvantage to transport and/or prepare the large rock samples and to need an extra cost for experiment. Moreover it is not easy to execute the test for jointed rock mass, and sometimes the design model estimated from the test can not be applied to the real design of disc cutter. In order to break this critical point, lots of numerical studies have been performed. PFC2D can simulate crack propagation and rock fragmentation effectively, because it is useful in particle flow analysis. Consequently, in this study, the PFC2D has been adopted for numerical analysis on cutting power of disc cutter according to the different angle of joint, the different direction of joint, and the different space of joint with jointed rock mass models. From the numerical analyses, it was concluded that the bigger cutting power of disc cutter was needed for reverse cutting direction to joint rather than for forward direction, and the cutting power of disc cutter was increased with decreasing the dip angle of joint and decreasing the space of joints in reverse cutting direction. The more precise numerical model for disc cutter can be developed from comparison between the numerical results and LCM test results, and the resonable guideline is expected for prediction of TBM performance and disc cutter.

Surface currents were observed by high-frequency (HF) radars off the Keum River estuary from December 2008 to February 2009. The dataset of observed surface currents had data gaps due to the interference of electromagnetic waves and the deteriorating weather conditions. To fill the data gaps an optimal interpolation procedure was developed. The characteristics of spatial correlation in the surface currents off the Keum River estuary were investigated and the spatial data gaps were filled using the optimal interpolation. Then, the temporal and spatial distribution of the interpolated surface currents and the patterns of interpolation error were examined. The correlation coefficients between the surface currents in the coastal region were higher than 0.7 because tidal currents dominate the surface circulation. The sample data covariance matrix (C), spatially averaged covariance matrix with localization ($C^G_{sm}$) and covariance matrix fitted by an exponential function ($C_{ft}$) were used to interpolate the original dataset. The optimal interpolation filled the data gaps and suppressed the spurious data with spikes in the time series of surface current speed so that the variance of the interpolated time series was smaller than that of the original data. When the spatial data coverage was larger (smaller) than 70% of the region, the interpolation error produced by $C^G_{sm}$ ($C_{ft}$) was smaller compared with that by C.
The landslide is one of the most significant natural disasters, which cause a lot of loss of human lives and properties. The landslides in natural slopes generally occur by complicated problems such as soil properties, topography, and geology. Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model is efficient computing technique that is widely used to solve complicated problems in many research fields. In this paper, the ANN model with application of error back propagation method was proposed for estimation of landslide hazard in natural slope. This model can evaluate the possibility of landslide hazard with two different approaches: one considering only soil properties; the other considering soil properties, topography, and geology. In order to evaluate reasonably the landslide hazard, the SlideEval (Ver, 1.0) program was developed using the ANN model. The evaluation of slope stability using the ANN model shows a high accuracy. Especially, the prediction of landslides using the ANN model gives more stable and accurate results in the case of considering such factors as soil, topographic and geological properties together. As a result of comparison with the statistical analysis(Korea Institute of Geosciences and Mineral Resources, 2003), the analysis using the ANN model is approximately equal to the statistical analysis. Therefore, the SlideEval (Ver. 1.0) program using ANN model can predict landslides hazard and estimate the slope stability.

The purpose of this study was to derive and analyze the hub facilities that occupy major positions in the vehicle movement networks of livestock facilities. For this purpose, this study used the KAHIS data provided by Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency. The hub facilities were derived from the degree centrality & betweenness centrality. The analysis results are summarized as follows. First, in a livestock facility's vehicle movement network, there are a small number of hub facilities with very high centrality indicator values compared to other facilities. Second, the hub facilities based on the degree centrality are the feed factory, the milk collecting center, slaughterhouse, slaughterhouse for chicken, and livestock markets. Third, the hub facilities based on the betweenness centrality are the livestock markets, the feed factory, and slaughterhouse. Fourth, hub facilities based on the degree centrality are concentrated in a particular area, but the hub facilities based on betweenness centrality are distributed relatively evenly.

Location determination of mobile user via RSSI approach has received ample attention from researchers lately. However, it remains a challenging issue due to the complexities of RSSI signal propagation characteristics, which are easily exacerbated by the mobility of user. Hence, a segmentation-based linear spline interpolation method is proposed to cater for the dynamic fluctuation pattern of radio signal in complex environment. This optimization algorithm is proposed in addition to the current radiolocation's (CC2431, Chipcon, Norway) algorithm, which runs on IEEE802.15.4 standard. The enhancement algorithm involves four phases. First phase consists of calibration model in which RSSI values at different static locations are collected and processed to obtain the mean and standard deviation value for the predefined distance. RSSI smoothing algorithm is proposed to minimize the dynamic fluctuation of radio signal received from each reference node when the user is moving. Distances are computed using the segmentation formula obtain in the first phase. In situation where RSSI value falls in more than one segment, the ambiguity of distance is solved by probability approach. The distance probability distribution function(pdf) for each distances are computed and distance with the highest pdf at a particular RSSI is the estimated distance. Finally, with the distances obtained from each reference node, an iterative trilateration algorithm is used for position estimation. Experiment results obtained position the proposed algorithm as a viable alternative for location tracking.
Understanding the wave characteristics near the outlet of coastal power plants for cooling water in the vicinity of the dredged areas is critically important for the construction and operation of the plants. By Employing the eigenfunction expansion method, in this study, we analyzed the reflection of monochromatic water waves over (1) shear currents near the outlet and (2) multi-arrayed trenches representing dredged areas. We firstly optimized the number of grids expressing shear currents and the number of evanescent modes based on a convergence test. We then analyzed the sensitivity of the reflection coefficients depending on (1) magnitude of shear currents, (2) width of shear currents, (3) a distance between adjacent trenches, and (4) a number of trenches. The results showed that the reflection coefficient was more sensitive to the number of trenches and the distance between trenches than the velocity of shear currents and the width of shear currents. We also found that even the effect of shear currents is relatively small, the effect is not negligible in a relative water depth from shallow to near shallow water waves (0.01 < kh ≦ 0.70).

Microstructural evolution and creep failure behavior of GTD 111 have been studied. Solidification and precipitation behaviors of the alloy during casting have been analyzed by microstructural observations. It has been found that MC carbides solidify just before the $\gamma$/$\gamma$' eutectic solidification. The ηphase was found to be formed by transformation of Ti-rich $\gamma$'phase. PFZ has formed in the vicinity of the transformed $\eta$ phase. A few MC particles, which have been identified as TaC, precipitated within the PFZ. Creep failure along grainboundary was dominant at and above $871^{\circ}C$. Creep failure above$ 871^{\circ}C$ was caused by the propagation of surface cracks and internal cracks. Creep crack has initiated at the microporosities embedded on the grainboundary. The $\eta$phase and PFZ have been found to be little or no effect on creep crack initiation.

Linear wireless sensor networks typically construct a network topology with a high reliability through sequential 1:1 mapping among sensor nodes, so that they are used in various surveillance applications of major national infrastructures. Most existing techniques for identifying sensor nodes in those networks are using GPS, AOA, and RSSI mechanisms. However, GPS or AOA based node identification techniques affect the size or production cost of the nodes so that it is not easy to construct practical sensor networks. RSSI based techniques may have a high deviation regrading location identification according to propagation environments and equipment quality so that complexity of error correction algorithm may increase. We propose a timestamps based sequential localization algorithm that uses transmit and receive timestamps in a message between sensor nodes without using GPS, AOA, and RSSI techniques. The algorithms for distance measurement between each node are expected to measure distance within up to 1 meter in case of an crystal oscillator of 300MHz or more.

This study was conducted to explore the levels of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS)-related knowledge, attitudes and preventive behaviors performance and to identify predictors of MERS-related preventive behaviors performance among clinical practice students in a tertiary hospital. The participants were 480 nursing and medical clinical practice students. Data collection was conducted using self-reported questionnaires in June of 2015 and were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-tests, one-way ANOVA, and hierarchical regression using the SPSSWIN 24.0 program. The MERS-related knowledge (9.56 out of 13 points) was high, attitudes towards MERS, such as severity cognition and prevention about MERS was positive (4.15 out of 5 points), and MERS-related preventive behaviors performance level was moderate (3.02 out of 5 points). Female students, having education experience regarding MERS, taking vaccination for influenza H1N1 infection in the last year, having the intention of taking influenza H1N1 in the current year, having fear of MERS infection, higher knowledge and more positive attitudes about MERS were predictors of better MERS-related preventive behaviors performance. These results show that general characteristics associated with MERS-related preventive behaviors performance should be considered to improve preventive behaviors of clinical practice students. Furthermore, this study highlights the need to develop effective and useful MERS education programs that provide essential knowledge and attitude about MERS that clinical practice students must acquire to promote the MERS-related preventive behaviors performance.
