Exploration of Factors that Improve Realism of Virtual Windows for Implementation of Virtual Environments (가상환경의 구현을 위한 가상창문의 현실감 향상 요소 탐색)

  • Windows are essential and important architectural elements for the organization of architectural spaces, and they give character to the space and have a great impact on the reaction of users. Virtual windows are installed to activate architectural spaces such as underground spaces where windows cannot be installed, and to provide a sense of psychological security to users in hospital clinics, etc. In this study, we reviewed the literature and collected and analyzed the precedents of virtual windows to discuss the factors necessary to improve the realism of virtual windows. The factors that affect the realism of virtual windows are further grouped into five categories: 1. Use of reproduced images or videos for views, 2. Representation of temporality, 3. Responsiveness to changes in the observer's perspective, 4. Realistic reproduction of sunlight, and 5. Provision of non-visual sensory elements. Virtual windows are not just a replacement for traditional windows, but a way to realize a virtual environment using digital media, and it is necessary to expand the discussion to the realization of the virtual environment and the relationship with architectural elements.

  • Furniture world which is closely associated with human life had been constantly developed, but traditional furniture disappeared after modernization almost. The reason lies rather in the importance of the diversity of Western-style furniture pursuing convenience and shapes, than in change of life style meanwhile. The diversity however reached the limit and it made a new advanced role of not only furniture, also design sector in general necessary, and as solution to solve this problem the immaterial value based on Eastern philosophy/mental was suggested in architecture and all around design sector overall as well. It means that the immaterial point which traditional furniture involved should be focused now and furthermore it's emotional and mental value which is more natural and has close relation with human being accordingly could be judged rightly. The reason why traditional furniture had been used since long time is the immaterial tendency which is well harmonized with the surrounding environment rather than the function. To verify this, the present study aimed to analyze not only the basic, also additional function of traditional furniture used in Hanok (traditional Koran-style house) by the inductive method for investigating the additional effects which users felt. Such immaterial role offers the user more convenience besides the original function of furniture and this made it available that furniture dominates the space. As good examples of such roles it was investigated that traditional furniture played meaningful roles like extensional serviceability, variable space, formation & movement of space, expression of grade of rank. That allowed that this study suggested the sustainable design and also the direction of development of interactive function of furniture through the expected effect having been showed in the modern space where the immaterial role of traditional furniture was applied to and the related cases.

A theoretic study about western traditional wallpaper hanging (서양의 전통도배에 관한 이론적 고찰)

  • Even though the notion exists that wall paper has got a short durability for interior decoration in terms of paper's nature, it can be the most important element among the modern dosing wall papering because of the variation of the walls visual effect. Wall paper hasn't been preserved well according to the paper's character and official records haven't been done well. So, by studying a case in which a room is maintained well, seeing various commercial samples which were used for an advertisement and reading several booklets it is possible to study historical evidence. In regard to wall paper and Papering. data, the commercial historic nature of the traditional wall papering has been recognized again in order to study the root of the technical and commercial background. In theory, the historic background research of traditional wall paper in the past is said to have established its theoretical system and the development of modern wall papering in the middle of Britain in 18th century. Through the theoretical study of wall papering, the following things have been researched: handling don the method of the traditional wall papering and lining paper, stylization of pattern by using the method of continual linking, subdivision of commercial cost and specialization of wallpaper, handing down the past traditional adhesion method, the origin of string wallpaper, utility of traditional wallpaper and its various abilities, the change from the face to face linking to duplicated linking, the development of DIY products by women's wallpaper selections. Put against other materials, wallpaper remains the most popular and preferable product for managing a wall and provides a decorative, wall dosing technique. This study can estimate the source of wallpapering history in order to create a systemic approach towards the future's wallpaper industry. This is very important data in order to establish a theoretical system of traditional wallpapering according to its historical research about wallpapering skills and its commercial aspect.

  • Since ancient times in Korea, in spite of the ranks of high and low, drink was like a all sorts of human emotions.   • Soengyo-jang has some characteristics as the most great house, the special functions, and the non-regional type of house form. And it has constructed continuously for two centuries by many owners in the different generations, It needs a special research method ; which are consist of a) comprehension of background information from documents and oral instructed materials, b) pursuit of design process through the building survey, and c) theoretical interpretation about 'collectivism'. From the results of this research, it is revealed that the architectural purpose of this house was constructing 'a great manor'. At first phase, it had been a single ordinary house, at second, it had expanded to a complex including many housing clusters, and finally became to expand its dwelling territory into whole village. Its expansion was progressed by the four collecting phases of which were building, building cluster, group of clusters, and topological setting. Main design elements operated in each of collecting phases ; they were partial element of , exterior spaces of , a linear building of , and a pavilion of . The last two elements were also powerful datum.

  • The first aim of this paper is to investigate and analyze Alan Colquhoun's architectural hermeneutics of tradition, 'conceptual displacement of the past.' The second aim is to overcome the limit of it, and to suggest new architectural hermeneutics of tradition, 'the reactivation of the past.' The architectural work is reduced by Colquhoun to typology or arbitrary language because he believes that without arbitrary language natural language is not able to work effectively. However, he ignores that two languages cannot be separable. When they are separated the key to natural language is understood to be an unverifiable similarity between a sense perception and its correspondence in the architectural object, while the key to arbitrary language becomes mere artificial agreement on the value and function of the linguistic sign. Therefore, natural language is appropriate only when it permits spontaneous combinations of sensory data within complex structures which emerge from, and support, complex human interaction and communication(the shining of the world and of the possibility of creative being in each individual thing). Only when architecture is translated into this kind of language, can it reactivate the world's past, and become poetic.

  • Many countermeasures are presented to make excessive earth circumstance pollution better in the earth. A lot of researches are in progress to lessen $CO_2$ among the industries exhausting it. The industries manufacturing cement are making many countermeasures. Many concernments on ECO-friendly materials, rather than cement, are increased, and researches are in progress to develop them. Lime, material mostly used before Portland cement appeared, attracts the Occident as well as the Orient. In the Occident, lime mortar was used in common, for maintaining and repairing cultural properties, too. This study is aimed at offering basic materials for the modern use of lime, ECO-friendly material. This study measured the change of intensity and weight with lime, sand, and earth, basic materials of Samhoimool. As a result, at the beginning, hydrated lime displayed its density late, but as time was gone, density was promoted continuously. In addition, density was promoted, when it was given heat at the beginning. If heat-generation reaction of quicklime and water was used, density was promoted at the beginning, but liquidity showed a drop.

  • For a long time, architecture has functioned as something that is inevitable for humans, a necessity that provides housing settings and living spaces for human lives. In the creation of art, architecture is a genre that has a field of infinite possibilities of endless inspirations of the present and the future with its unimaginable various styles and functions. This study aims at analyzing the figurative formation and characteristic expression style of nude architecture with modern fashion design, reinterpreting it by a modern edge, and expressing it into an originative costume work. Furthermore, the purpose of this study is to provide a new motive for the potential of continuous development of modern fashion in the future through an endless study on artistic architecture that includes nude architecture and an originative expression style that will prepare a momentum that indicates the direction into a new line of fashion.

Problems and Tasks of Historiography of Modern Architecture in Korea (한국 근대건축사 서술의 문제와 과제)

  • The tasks of writing history is to reconstruct the past in order to understand the present condition and to envision the future. Modern architectural histories in the west have assumed this role, from Winckelmann to Giedion. Likewise, history of Korean modern architecture has to serve this purpose. However, existing histories of Korean modern architecture simply list up stylistic changes from western eclectic architecture to modernism without any historical narratives explaining the transition from Korean traditional architecture to modern architecture. History of Korean modern architecture has simply been understood as a unilateral process of transplantation of western architecture into Korea. This paper points out two major problems underlying this kind of historiography of Korean modern architecture. The one is formalistic approach which sees history of modern architecture mainly as a process of formal and stylistic changes. The other is humanistic approach which sees modern architects as agents of history. This paper argues that this kind of history writings has limitations since modernity of Korean architecture is fundamentally different from that of the west. and that specific tasks that Korean modern architectural history has to address are then two folds;(re)connecting the past architectural tradition to the present and forming self-identity of Korean architecture.

  • In the middle of 1940s, Hassan Fathy, a great Islamic contemporary architect, built cheap multifamily houses, schools, mosques and public market in the village of Gourna, near Luxor, Egypt for the poor Egyptian. At that time the western style houses made of concrete materials were so expensive for the Egyptian people in the rural area, that Hassan Fathy, a young architect, challenged to build the houses for them. He considered seriously the expenses that the lower-class Egyptians in the rural area could pay for building houses. He built up gorges arch-style building and done-style building by using traditional materials, which consisted of reeds, roues and mud brick for adobe. He made the design of houses cool in summer and warm in winter. The houses in the Gourna village were, afterwards, highly evaluated, in the sense that they represented the Islamic uniqueness of architecture and its beauty. As a result, the Gourna village made him receive many of awards including the Aga Khan Award. This study tries to focus on the reviewing of modern Islamic architecture by analyzing Hassan Fathy's architectural art, on the investigation of traditional materials used for building the Gourna village, and finally on the contribution for the research of Islamic architecture
