Objective: The purposes of this study were to establish cephalometric norms of Mongolian adults, which have not previously been reported in orthodontic journals, and to compare them with cephalometric norms of Korean adults. Methods: Lateral cephalometric radiographs of 74 Mongolian adults (35 men, 39 women) and 95 Korean adults (52 men, 43 women) with normal occlusions and well-balanced lateral profiles were obtained. The subjects were chosen by orthodontists of the same ethnic background. Forty craniofacial variables were measured, and groups were compared by analysis of covariance. Results: The cephalometric norms for male and female Mongolian and Korean adults with normal occlusions and well-balanced lateral profiles were established. Sexual dimorphism was found in linear skeletal measurements and vertical skeletal relationships. Compared with Korean adults, Mongolian adults had shorter anterior facial height, more prominent chins, and more upright upper incisors. There were few differences in soft tissue measurements. The differences were statistically significant, but their clinical importance may be limited. Conclusions: Cephalometric differences can be considered, but little difference may exist in the orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning of Mongolian and Korean adults.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of the Q-ray view, a novel optical device on reliability of assessing a tooth status by dental hygiene students in the training for dental hygiene process. Twenty patients were enrolled in this study. Oral examinations were conducted by both seventeen third-year dental hygiene students and a trained faculty member. Traditional visual inspection was performed in phase I and then re-examined with Q-ray view in phase II. Restoration codes and lesion codes for each tooth were recorded separately according to the predefined criteria. As a measure of reliability, percent agreement and Cohen's kappa were determined. Agreements for each intraoral regions and types of lesion and restoration were calculated. Paired t-test and Pearson chi-square test for two proportions were used to compare mean Cohen's kappa and percent agreement at each phase. For the lesion code, mean kappa values of phase II for intraoral regions were significantly greater than that of phase I (p=0.017). For the both of the lesion code and restoration code, percent agreements of phase II for each types of lesion and restoration were significantly greater than that of phase II (p<0.001 and p<0.001, respectively). Especially difference of percent agreements between phase I and II for incipient caries, caries and fracture were significant for the lesion code (p=0.046, p<0.001, and p=0.029, respectively) and for not restored or sealed, tooth-colored restoration were significant for the restoration code (p<0.001 and p=0.011, respectively). The reliability of assessing a tooth status was improved when the Q-ray view used in dental hygiene student with beginner level of expertise. Q-ray view can be a promising device for conducting and educating the dental hygiene process better.
This study was investigated to assess the difference of facial height and occlusal plane inclination between normal occlusion group and class II malocclusion group. The subjects consisted of 50 normal occlusion (male 25, female 25) and 50 class II(male 25, female 25) malocclusion patients. All subjects are adult. lateral cephalogram was taken with standard method traced, and digitized for each subjects. The computerized statiscal analysis was carried out with SPSS program. The results were as follows 1. In class II malocclusion group, variables significant different from normal occlusion group were as follows ; SN-FOP, FH-BOP, MP-BOP, AB-BOP, AB-FOP, Facial plane-BOP, FP-FOP 2. In class II malocclusion group, the posterior facial height -especially posterior lower facial height-was significantly smaller than normal occlusion group.(P<0.05) 3. In class II malocclusion group, the angles between occlusal plane and upper and lower incisor, the angle between upper molar and bisected occlusal plane were significantly larger than those of normal occlusion group. (P<0.05) 4. L1 to Mandibular plane (mm) was a unique factor of occlusal plane position that showed significant difference in class II malocclusion group. 5. The correlation between overbite and occlusal plane inclination existed in class II malocclusion group, but the correlation didn't exist in normal occlusion group.

The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of ferric sulfate and formocresol as pulp dressing agents in pulpotomized teeth of dogs. 40 teeth of 5 dogs, weighting 10kg. were used in this study. The animals were sacrificed at the intervals of 3, 7, 14, 28 and 56 days for histopathologic evaluation. The specimens were observed by the light microscope. The results were as follows : 1. Inflammatory response was observed in both groups, but pulp tissue of ferric sulfate group was showed lesser inflammatory degree and more rapid recovery than that of formocresol group. 2. In ferric sulfate group odontoblasts showed irregular arrangement pattern at initial stage and returned to regular pattern after 2 weeks. But in formocresol group. continued irregular pattern of odontoblast was observed during experimental period. 3. Reparative dentin was produced widely along the canal in one specimen of formocresol group at 8 weeks and dentinal bridge was formed in two specimens of ferric sulfate group at 8 weeks.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the dentoskeletal and soft tissue profile changes after extraction of two lower first or second premolars in "borderline" adult skeletal Class III cases. Methods: Twenty-eight patients with "borderline" skeletal Class III malocclusion were studied. All of them were treated by extraction of two lower first or second premolars. Lateral cephalometric radiographs taken at the start and end of treatment were analysed. Twenty-five cephalometric variables were calculated and paired $t$-tests were performed. Results: After treatment, no significant changes were noted in the skeletal parameters ($p{\geq}0.05$). Regarding the dental parameters, the L1-MP angle decreased by $8.1^{\circ}$, the U1-L1 angle increased by $7.7^{\circ}$ ($p$ < 0.01), the overjet distance increased by 5.7 mm ($p$ < 0.01), the L1-NB angle decreased by $7.3^{\circ}$ and the L1-NB distance decreased by 4.8 mm ($p$ < 0.01). The soft tissue parameters of Li-E, Li-H and Li-RL2 distance decreased by 3.2 mm, 3.4 mm and 4.1 mm respectively ($p$ < 0.01). Conclusions: Orthodontic camouflage treatment by extraction of two lower first or second premolars provides a viable treatment alternative for "borderline" skeletal Class III cases to achieve a good occlusal relationship.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the skeletal and dentoalveolar effects of facemask therapy and to compare the anchorage of a bonded expander in patients with Class III malocclusion and different vertical skeletal patterns. Twenty subjects with Class III malocclusion were included in this study and were treated with a facemask and bonded expander. Based on the FMA, subjects were divided into two groups of 10 patients each: a high vertical group (HV; mean FMA $33.56^{\circ}$) and an average vertical group (AV; mean FMA $24.88^{\circ}$). Lateral cephalograms were taken and evaluated before and after treatment. In both groups, forward movement of the maxilla and backward rotation of the mandible were observed after treatment, with no statistical differences between the groups. Vertical skeletal variables increased in both groups, but the increase of FMA was significantly larger in the HV group than the AV group. Mesial movement of maxillary molars and proclination of maxillary incisors which indicate anchorage loss of bonded expander were observed in both groups, with no significant differences between the groups. In conclusion, facemask therapy resulted in effective maxillary protraction in both HV and AV groups. However, the open bite tendency was increased more in the HV group.

Recently, a new imaging method, gamma vertex imaging (GVI), was proposed for the verification of in-vivo proton dose distribution. In GVI, the vertices of prompt gammas generated by proton induced nuclear interaction were determined by tracking the Compton-recoiled electrons. The GVI system is composed of a beryllium electron converter for converting gamma to electron, two double-sided silicon strip detectors (DSSDs) for the electron tracking, and a scintillation detector for the energy determination of the electron. In the present study, the modules of a charge sensitive preamplifier (CSP) and a shaping amplifier for the analog signal processing of DSSD were developed and the performances were evaluated by comparing the energy resolutions with those of the commercial products. Based on the results, it was confirmed that the energy resolution of the developed CSP module was a little lower than that of the CR-113 (Cremat, Inc., MA), and the resolution of the shaping amplifier was similar to that of the CR-200 (Cremat, Inc., MA). The value of $V_{rms}$ representing the magnitude of noise of the developed system was estimated as 6.48 keV and it was confirmed that the trajectory of the electron can be measured by the developed system considering the minimum energy deposition ( > ~51 keV) of Compton-recoiled electron in 145-${\mu}m$-thick DSSD.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the fluoride release and anticariogenic effect of two compomers which is known to have been developed to improve the weak properties of glass ionomer cement and composite resin. Z-100 as composite resin(Group I), Dyract AP(Group II) and F-2000(Group III) as compomer, and Fuji II LC as glass ionomer cement(Group IV) were used as test materials and evaluations were peformed by pH/ISE meter far analyses of fluoride and polarizing microscope for analyses of anticariogenicity. The results can be summarized as follows: 1. The amount of fluoride release in compoite resin and compomer groups showed general pattern of decline during test period. Z-100 showed no fluoride release during test period. Fuji II LC showed the highest fluoride release among test groups and then F-2000 were followed. 2. The least resistance to dimineralization was observed microscopically in Z-100 group which has no fluoride in it. The best resistance to dimineralization was observed microscopically in Fuji II LC group and then compomer groups were followed. 3. Significant difference in lesion area was found between Fuji II LC group and another groups. Significant difference in lesion area was found between compomer groups and Z-100 group. No significant difference in lesion area was found between Dyract AP group and F-2000 cup. 4. Two compomers showed continual fluoride release and anticariogenic effect around filling materials. therefore, compomer was evaluated very attractive restorative material in pediatric dentistry.

Purpose : The purpose of the current study was to report the results of curettage and en bloc excision as well as to introduce how to excise the nidus percutaneously with Halo-mill. Material and Methods : Twenty patients(14 men and 6 women) were evaluated, who had operative treatments after diagnosed as osteoid osteoma from March 1990 to January 1998. These patients ranged in age from 7 to 42 years(average: 20.8 years). Locations were 9 femurs, 6 tibias, 2 vertebras, 1 ulna, 1 maxilla and 1 skull. Nine femoral lesions included 5 proximal metaphysis, 2 neck and 2 diaphysis, while 5 tibial lesions included 3 diaphysis, 1 proximal metaphysis and 1 distal metaphysis. We used simple radiography, bone scan, CT and MRI for the accurate diagnosis and localization. As for surgical treatments, while excision and curettage had to need open-exposure of lesion, the percutaneous excision of nidus did not need openexposure : guided Halo-mill into K-wire inserted to nidus under image intensifier. Results : Simple radiography showed that 10 cases had typical nidus and others had only cortical sclerosis. Bone scan was performed at 14 cases and all had hot uptake except one case. We used CT in 10 cases and MRI in 4 cases as diagnostic methods, of which 1 case didn't reveal nidus at CT. Surgical treatment consisted of 6 curettages, 11 excisions, 2 percutaneous excisions with halo-mill and 1 total elbow arthroplasty. We used 7mm sized Halo-mill. During the follow-up period, all patient relieved symptoms and there were no recurrences. All had histologically typical findings except one which had hyperostosis without nidus. Conclusion : Complete removal of the nidus is the most important factor in the treatment. We could excise the nidus percutaneously in 2 cases with the minimal injury to surrounding soft tissues. If we could evaluate the precise location, size of nidus and percutaneous acccesibility, the percutaneous excision of nidus with Halo-mill could be an alternative method as a treatment of osteoid osteoma.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate racial differences In head posture and the influence of head posture to the craniofacial morphology. The sample group of this study was made up of 51 Korean males and 120 Scandinavian Caucasian males. From the comparison of the cranio-cervical angle and the variables of craniofacial morphology between them, the following results were obtained. 1. The cranio-cervical angle (NSL/OPT) was on average 9.28 degrees larger In Koreans. 2. The length of the anterior cranial base (N-S) was on average 4.66mm shorter in Koreans. 3. The length of the maxillary base (sp-pm and ss-pm) were on average 2.75mm and 4.65mm shorter in Koreans respectively, the anterior maxillary height (n-sp) was on average 2.60mm longer, the posterior dimension (s-pm) was found to be 2.06mm longer in Koreans, and the maxillary inclination (NSL/NL) was identical in both samples. 4. The mandibular body length (pg-tgo) and ramus height (ar-tgo) were identical in the two groups, but the genial angle (ML/RL) was 3.22 degrees smaller and the mandibular plane inclination (NSL/ML) was 2.44 degrees larger in Koreans 5. The maxillary prognathism (s-n-sp and s-n-ss) and the mandibular prognathism (s-n-sm) were identical in both samples. 6. The sagittal jaw relationship (ss-n-pg) was 1.44 degrees larger in the Korean sample, but the vortical jaw relationship (NL/ML) was not significantly different. 7. The anterior facial height (n-gn) was 5.57mm longer in the Korean sample. 8. The mandibular alveolar prognathism (CL/ML) was 5.71 degrees greater and the interincisal angle (ILs/ILi) was 3.08 degrees more acute in Koreans. Taken together these results, craniofacial morphology can be influenced by the head posture defined by cranio-cervical angulation.
